A Collosal Buddha Statue Carved into a Cliff - Mount Emei Scenic Area .
The Leshan Giant Buddha (simplified Chinese: 乐山大佛; traditional Chinese: 樂山大佛; pinyin: Lèshān Dàfó) is a 233-foot tall stone statue, built during the Tang Dynasty. It is carved out of a cliff face that lies at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi rivers in the southern part of Sichuan province in China, near the city of Leshan. The stone sculpture faces Mount Emei, with the rivers flowing below his feet. It is the largest stone Buddha in the world and it is by far the tallest pre-modern statue in the world.
The Mount Emei Scenic Area, including Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. It was not damaged by the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.

The addition of other temples turned the site into one of Buddhism's holiest sites. Over the centuries, the cultural treasures grew in number. The most remarkable is the Giant Buddha of Leshan, carved out of a hillside in the 8th century and looking down on the confluence of three rivers. At 71 m high, it is the largest Buddha in the world. Mount Emei is also notable for its exceptionally diverse vegetation, ranging from subtropical to subalpine pine forests.

After a chilly night's sleep at the Golden Summit Hotel on the top of Emei Shan we got out of bed at 6:00 am to catch the 6:45 am sunrise.
We dressed warmly (Glo wore six layers on top!) and headed to the summit, which was a short 10-15 minute walk away. The summit has a Buddhist temple and a massive shrine that overlooks the valley below. The platform wasn't too crowded when we arrived, but you should get there early to stake out a spot right at the railing. As it was an overcast morning, the sunrise wasn't as spectacular as we hoped for. Nevertheless, it was much clearer than the previous day, and we were happy to have seen peaks of brilliant orange, yellow, and pink rays of sun shining through the clouds! After sunrise, we walked around for about 30 more minutes, taking in the serenity of the mountain views, valleys, clouds and trees.
Getting from Golden Summit to Baguo Si (Baguo Village) took about 3 hours and started with a 55 RMB per person cable car ride from the summit to Leidongping. There, we returned Glo's rented jacket in exchange for the 170 RMB deposit. We used our bus roundtrip tickets from the previous day to ride from Leidongping to Baguo Si for free, which took about 1.5 hours. At Baguo Village, we had lunch then paid 25 RMB per person for the hour-long one-way ride to Leshan. If you take a taxi, you could probably make it from Baguo Si to Leshan in 40-45 minutes. Our van just happened to make an extra stop that required a short detour.
At Leshan, there are actually two separate parks that are right next door to each other, the Oriental Buddha Capital and Leshan Giant Budda Park. It cost 170 RMB per person for admissions into both. Both parks are large and consist of nice paved paths meandering through beautiful forests. We spent three hours exploring both parks but kind of rushed through the Giant Buddha Park because we were tired and trying to get back to Chengdu before dark. We probably could have easily spent 4-5 hours there if we had more time. The parks are lovely but a bit overpriced in our opinion.
We caught a bus back to Chengdu from right outside the Giant Buddha Park. It was very convenient and cost just 50 RMB per person and took just under 1.5 hours!

Leshan (simplified Chinese: 乐山; traditional Chinese: 樂山; pinyin: Lèshān; Wade–Giles: Le-shan; literally "Happy mountain"; Sichuanese Pinyin: No2san1; local pronunciation: [nʊʔ˧sã˥]) is a prefecture-level city located at the confluence of the Dadu and Min rivers in Sichuan Province, People's Republic of China. Leshan is located on the southwestern fringe of the Red Basin in southern Sichuan, about 120 km from Chengdu.
Leshan has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cwa) and is largely mild and humid. Winter is short, mild and dry, with a January average of 7.1 °C (44.8 °F), and while frost may occur, snow is rare. Summers are long, hot and humid, with highs often exceeding 30 °C (86 °F), yet extended heat waves are rare. The daily average in July and August is around 26 °C (79 °F). Rainfall is light in winter and can be heavy in summer, and more than 70% of the annual total occurs from June to September.
There is a passenger rail line that serves the Mianyang–Chengdu–Leshan inter-city area.

A Collosal Buddha Statue Carved into a Cliff - Mount Emei Scenic Area . The Leshan Giant Buddha (simplified Chinese: 乐山大佛; traditional Chinese: 樂山大佛; pinyin: Lèshān Dàfó) is a 233-foot tall stone statue, built during the Tang Dynasty. It is carved out of a cliff face that lies at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi rivers in the southern part of Sichuan province in China, near the city of Leshan. The stone sculpture faces Mount Emei, with the rivers flowing below his feet. It is the largest stone Buddha in the world and it is by far the tallest pre-modern statue in the world. The Mount Emei Scenic Area, including Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. It was not damaged by the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. -

The first Buddhist temple in China was built here in Sichuan Province in the 1st century A.D. in the beautiful surroundings of the summit Mount Emei. The addition of other temples turned the site into one of Buddhism's holiest sites. Over the centuries, the cultural treasures grew in number. The most remarkable is the Giant Buddha of Leshan, carved out of a hillside in the 8th century and looking down on the confluence of three rivers. At 71 m high, it is the largest Buddha in the world. Mount Emei is also notable for its exceptionally diverse vegetation, ranging from subtropical to subalpine pine forests. -

We dressed warmly (Glo wore six layers on top!) and headed to the summit, which was a short 10-15 minute walk away. The summit has a Buddhist temple and a massive shrine that overlooks the valley below. The platform wasn't too crowded when we arrived, but you should get there early to stake out a spot right at the railing. As it was an overcast morning, the sunrise wasn't as spectacular as we hoped for. Nevertheless, it was much clearer than the previous day, and we were happy to have seen peaks of brilliant orange, yellow, and pink rays ...

After a chilly night's sleep at the Golden Summit Hotel on the top of Emei Shan we got out of bed at 6:00 am to catch the 6:45 am sunrise.
We dressed warmly (Glo wore six layers on top!) and headed to the summit, which was a short 10-15 minute walk away. The summit has a Buddhist temple and a massive shrine that overlooks the valley below. The platform wasn't too crowded when we arrived, but you should get there early to stake out a spot right at the railing. As it was an overcast morning, the sunrise wasn't as spectacular as we hoped for. Nevertheless, it was much clearer than the previous day, and we were happy to have seen peaks of brilliant orange, yellow, and pink rays of sun shining through the clouds! After sunrise, we walked around for about 30 more minutes, taking in the serenity of the mountain views, valleys, clouds and trees.
Getting from Golden Summit to Baguo Si (Baguo Village) took about 3 hours and started with a 55 RMB per person cable car ride from the summit to Leidongping. There, we returned Glo's rented jacket in exchange for the 170 RMB deposit. We used our bus roundtrip tickets from the previous day to ride from Leidongping to Baguo Si for free, which took about 1.5 hours. At Baguo Village, we had lunch then paid 25 RMB per person for the hour-long one-way ride to Leshan. If you take a taxi, you could probably make it from Baguo Si to Leshan in 40-45 minutes. Our van just happened to make an extra stop that required a short detour.
At Leshan, there are actually two separate parks that are right next door to each other, the Oriental Buddha Capital and Leshan Giant Budda Park. It cost 170 RMB per person for admissions into both. Both parks are large and consist of nice paved paths meandering through beautiful forests. We spent three hours exploring both parks but kind of rushed through the Giant Buddha Park because we were tired and trying to get back to Chengdu before dark. We probably could have easily spent 4-5 hours there if we had more time. The parks are lovely but a bit overpriced in our opinion.
We caught a bus back to Chengdu from right outside the Giant Buddha Park. It was very convenient and cost just 50 RMB per person and took just under 1.5 hours!

This enormous statue was carved out of the cliff face during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) and is located at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi rivers in Sichuan province, China. Construction was started in 713, led by a Chinese monk named Haitong. He hoped that the Buddha would calm the turbulent waters that plagued the shipping vessels traveling down the river. When funding for the project was threatened, he is said to have gouged out his own eyes to show his piety and sincerity. After his death, however, the construction was stuck due to insufficient funding. About 70 years later, a jiedushi decided to sponsor the project and the construction was completed by Haitong's disciples in 803.
Apparently the massive construction resulted in so much stone being removed from the cliff face and deposited into the river below that the currents were indeed altered by the statue, making the water safe for passing ships.
A sophisticated drainage system was incorporated into the Leshan Giant Buddha when it was built. It is still in working order. It includes drainage pipes carved into various places on the body, to carry away the water after the rains so as to reduce weathering.
When the Giant Buddha was carved, a huge thirteen storey stone structure was built to shelter it from rain and sunshine. This structure was destroyed and sacked by the Mongols during the wars at the end of the Yuan Dynasty. From then on, the stone statue was exposed to the elements.
