The story of my relationships with Dumas' novels is something between tragedy and satire: I can't stand these novels because I don't find the ideas expressed in them good enough to ruin the reputation of so many historical figures who were clearly way better than Dumas depicted them; I also can't ignore the influence that Dumas' novels still have in different domains of culture. My pain for Louis XIII will be endless, I suppose, so let's go straight to the film.
Since I don't like the novel, I'm less critical for the cinematic adaptations than I usually am with other books. Still, the adaptations easily manage to displease me; most of them are even more illogic and unbalanced than the original version. So I was glad to find this one - it still has its flaws aside from those that already were in the books, but it was a good tentative to make the whole thing a bit more aesthetic. The female cast is strange, not to say something worse, and Milady is the only one I can accept among them, but the male cast, the costumes, the entourage and the camerawork save the film. The scenario also is rather good, considering the starting point.
And Buckingham. Oh, I never liked Buckingham. I don't like him now, but I wanted so much to make a video with Simon Ward in this role - not thanks to the character himself (the character's still awful), but thanks to the manner of playing this character. It's something intriguing and inspiring. I have an idea for AU about Buckingham and Anne of Austria, but I need a fancast of young Charles I for this, and I can't find a suitable one. So I've made a video about two unpleasant persons who actually were a pairing in canon, only this pairing didn't last long) Usually I dislike such pairings myself, and this isn't an exception, but I couldn't resist the idea to make this vid X_X
I'm sorry for the overused song, but it was too convenient for the pairing, gentle on the surface and cruel underneath.

The Three Musketeers is a 1973 film based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas, père. It was directed by Richard Lester and written by George MacDonald Fraser (famous for his Flashman series of historical comic novels). It was originally proposed in the 1960s as a vehicle for The Beatles, whom Lester had directed in two other films. It was intended to run for three hours, but later it was split into two, the second part becoming 1974's The Four Musketeers. In 1989, the cast and crew returned to film The Return of the Musketeers, loosely based on Dumas' Twenty Years After.
The film adheres closely to the novel, but it also injects a fair amount of humour. It was shot by David Watkins, with an eye for period detail. The fight scenes were choreographed by master swordsman William Hobbs and turn the swashbuckling movies of the Forties and Fifties on their collective ear; these are more like brawls, with the combatants using knees, fists, furniture and even wet laundry as often as they do their swords. The humor also can swing to the bawdy, with some double entendres and a bit of silliness that takes full advantage of Raquel Welch's (as Constance Bonacieux) charms, for instance.

The Three Musketeers is a 2011 3D adventure film directed by Paul W. S. Anderson which is a rewriting of the novel of the same title by Alexandre Dumas. The film was released on 1 September 2011 for Germany, 12 October 2011 for the United Kingdom and France and 21 October 2011 for the United States, Canada and Australia. Critics gave it a negative reaction but the film achieved a positive box office result.
In Venice at the beginning of the 17th Century, the Three Musketeers, Athos (Matthew Macfadyen), Porthos (Ray Stevenson), and Aramis (Luke Evans), with the help of Athos' longtime lover, Milady de Winter (Milla Jovovich), steal airship blueprints made by Leonardo da Vinci. However, they are betrayed by Milady, who gives the blueprints to the Duke of Buckingham (Orlando Bloom). Upon returning to France, the Musketeers are forced to disband by Cardinal Richelieu (Christoph Waltz) for their failure, and they end up on the streets of Paris.
One year later, a young man named D'Artagnan (Logan Lerman) leaves the village of Gascony for Paris in hopes of becoming a Musketeer as his father was, only to learn that they no longer exist. At a rural bar, D'Artagnan's horse is offended by Captain Rochefort (Mads Mikkelsen), the leader of Richelieu's guard, and d'Artagnan challenges him to a duel, but Rochefort shoots him while he is distracted, but he is saved by Milady de Winter. Arriving in Paris, D'Artagnan by coincidence separately encounters Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, and accidentally offends all three and schedules duels with each at 12:00,1:00 and 2:00PM.

The story of my relationships with Dumas' novels is something between tragedy and satire: I can't stand these novels because I don't find the ideas expressed in them good enough to ruin the reputation of so many historical figures who were clearly way better than Dumas depicted them; I also can't ignore the influence that Dumas' novels still have in different domains of culture. My pain for Louis XIII will be endless, I suppose, so let's go straight to the film.
Since I don't like the novel, I'm less critical for the cinematic adaptations than I usually am with other books. Still, the adaptations easily manage to displease me; most of them are even more illogic and unbalanced than the original version. So I was glad to find this one - it still has its flaws aside from those that already were in the books, but it was a good tentative to make the whole thing a bit more aesthetic. The female cast is strange, not to say something worse, and Milady is the only one I can accept among them, but the male cast, the costumes, the entourage and the camerawork save the film. The scenario also is rather good, considering the starting point.
And Buckingham. Oh, I never liked Buckingham. I don't like him now, but I wanted so much to make a video with Simon Ward in this role - not thanks to the character himself (the character's still awful), but thanks to the manner of playing this character. It's something intriguing and inspiring. I have an idea for AU about Buckingham and Anne of Austria, but I need a fancast of young Charles I for this, and I can't find a suitable one. So I've made a video about two unpleasant persons who actually were a pairing in canon, only this pairing didn't last long) Usually I dislike such pairings myself, and this isn't an exception, but I couldn't resist the idea to make this vid X_X
I'm sorry for the overused song, but it was too convenient for the pairing, gentle on the surface and cruel underneath.

The Three Musketeers

The Three Musketeers (Les Trois Mousquetaires) is a novel by Alexandre Dumas, père. It recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan after he leaves home to become a musketeer. D'Artagnan is not one of the musketeers of the title; those are his friends Athos, Porthos, and Aramis -- inseparable friends who live by the motto, "One for all, and all for one".
The Three Musketeers was first published in serial form in the magazine Le Siècle between March and July 1844. Dumas claimed it was based on manuscripts he had discovered in the Bibliothèque Nationale. It was later proven that Dumas had based his work on the book Mémoires de Monsieur D'Artagnan, capitaine lieutenant de la première compagnie des Mousquetaires du Roi (Memoirs of Mister D'Artagnan, Lieutenant Captain of the first company of the King's Musketeers) by Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras (Cologne, 1700).
Dumas' version of the story covers the adventures of D'Artagnan and his friends from 1625 to 1628, as they are involved in intrigues involving the weak King Louis XIII of France, his powerful and cunning advisor Cardinal Richelieu, the beautiful Queen Anne of Austria, her English lover, George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, and the Siege of La Rochelle. Adding to the intrigue are the mysterious Milady de Winter, and Richelieu's right-hand man, the Comte de Rochefort. (summary from wikipedia)

In the very first sentences of his preface, Alexandre Dumas indicated as his source Mémoires de Monsieur d'Artagnan, printed by Pierre Rouge in Amsterdam. It was in this book, he said, that d'Artagnan relates his first visit to M. de Tréville, captain of the Musketeers, where in the antechamber he met three young men with the names Athos, Porthos and Aramis. This information struck the imagination of Dumas so much—he tells us—that he continued his investigation and finally encountered once more the names of the three musketeers in a manuscript with the title Mémoire de M. le comte de la Fère, etc.. Elated—so continues his yarn—he asked permission to reprint the manuscript. Permission granted:
"Well, it is the first part of this precious manuscript that we offer today to our readers, while giving it back its more convenient title and under the engagement to publish immediately the second part should this first part be successful. In the meantime, as the godfather is as good as a second father, we invite the reader to address himself to us, and not to the Comte de La Fère, about his pleasure or boredom and slept. This being said, let's get on with our story."[3]
The book he referred to was Mémoires de M. d'Artagnan, capitaine lieutenant de la première compagnie des Mousquetaires du Roi (Memoirs of Mister d'Artagnan, Lieutenant Captain of the first company of the King's Musketeers) by Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras (Cologne, 1700). The book was borrowed from the Marseille public library, and the card-index remains to this day; Dumas kept the book when he went back to Paris.[citation needed]
Following Dumas's lead in his preface, Eugène d'Auriac (de la Bibliothèque Royale) in 1847 was able to write the biography of d'Artagnan: d'Artagnan, Capitaine-Lieutenant des Mousquetaires-- Sa vie aventureuse-- Ses duels-- etc. based on Courtilz de Sandras

In 1625 d'Artagnan, a poor young nobleman leaves his family in Gascony and travels to Paris with the intention of joining the Musketeer of the Guard.
However, en route, at an inn in Meung-sur-Loire, an older man derides d'Artagnan's horse and, feeling insulted, d'Artagnan demands to fight a duel with him. The older man's companions beat d'Artagnan unconscious with a pot and a metal tong that breaks his sword; his letter of introduction to Monsieur de Tréville, the commander of the Musketeers, is stolen. D'Artagnan resolves to avenge himself upon the man, who is later revealed to be the Comte de Rochefort, an agent of Cardinal Richelieu, who is in Meung to pass orders from the Cardinal to Milady de Winter, another of his agents.
In Paris, d'Artagnan visits de Tréville at the headquarters of the Musketeers, but the meeting is overshadowed by the loss of his letter, and de Tréville refuses his application to join. From de Tréville's window, d'Artagnan sees Rochefort passing in the street below and rushes out of the building to confront him, but in doing so he separately causes offense to three of the Musketeers, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, who each demand satisfaction; D'Artagnan must duel each of them in turn that afternoon.

Fairbanks signed a contract with Triangle Pictures in 1915 and began working under the supervision of D.W. Griffith. His first film was titled The Lamb, and in the film, he debuted his remarkable athletic abilities that would gain wide attention among theatre audiences.
Fairbanks met actress Mary Pickford at a party in 1916 and they began an affair. In 1917, the couple joined Fairbanks' friend Charlie Chaplin selling war bonds by train across the U.S. Pickford and Chaplin were then the two highest paid film stars in Hollywood.Fairbanks was determined to have Pickford become his wife, but she was still married to actor Owen Moore. He finally gave her an ultimatum. She then obtained a fast divorce in the small Nevada town of Minden on March 2, 1920. Fairbanks leased the Beverly Hills mansion Grayhall and was rumoured to have used it during his courtship of Pickford.
The couple married on March 28, 1920. Fairbanks and Pickford separated in 1933, after he began an affair with Sylvia, Lady Ashley. They divorced in 1936, with Pickford keeping the Pickfair estate. Within months Fairbanks and Ashley were married in Paris. In December 1939, at 56, Fairbanks had a heart attack in his sleep and died a day later at his home in Santa Monica. By some accounts[citation needed], he had been obsessively working out against medical advice, trying to regain his once-trim waistline. Fairbanks's famous last words were, "I've never felt better." His funeral service was held at the Wee Kirk o' the Heather Church in Glendale's Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery where he was placed in a crypt in the Great Mausoleum. He was deeply mourned and honored by his colleagues and fans for his contributions to the film industry and Hollywood.

And, after impressing the three best swordsmen in Paris, Douglas Fairbanks becomes the fourth blade, together with Athos, Porthos and Aramis. He also finds love, with Marguerite De La Motte (as Constance), and much palace intrigue. Nigel de Brulier (as Cardinal Richelieu) makes life particularly irksome, involving Fairbanks and friends in schemes against weak a King Adolphe Menjou (as Louis XIII), and his unfaithful Queen Mary MacLaren (as Anne).
Alexandre Dumas' classic is a perfect vehicle for Fairbanks; who, after the success of his "Zorro", struck box office gold with a series of classy audience pleasing productions. Iit's certainly true that Fairbanks' 1920s films had an indelible impact upon subsequent adaptations. Fairbanks, through the force of his personality, didn't so much "play" characters like "D'Artagnan" as much as he made the characters play him.

Set in the 17th century, it recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan after he leaves home to travel to Paris, to join the Musketeers of the Guard.
