INVESTIGATES THE HISTORY, MYTH AND POPULAR CULTURE OF THE ALAMO!
On March 6, 1836 the 13-day siege of the Alamo ended. Among the dead were three men destined to become martyrs and heroes: David Crockett, James Bowie and William B. Travis. Cries of Remember the Alamo! would eventually fuel an American victory over Mexico. The Alamo and its defenders grew into enduring symbols of courage and sacrifice in the face of overwhelming odds.
Controversy has always been part of the history and legend of the Alamo. Whether they hold traditional or revisionist views, people are passionate about their opinions.

Martin David Robinson (September 26, 1925 December 8, 1982), known professionally as Marty Robbins, was an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist.
One of the most popular and successful American country and Western singers of his era, for most of his nearly four-decade career, Robbins was rarely far from the country music charts, and several of his songs also became pop hits.
The Alamo, originally known as Mission San Antonio de Valero, is a former Roman Catholic mission and fortress compound, now a museum, in San Antonio, Texas. The compound, which originally comprised a sanctuary and surrounding buildings, was built by the Spanish Empire in the 18th century for the education of local Native Americans after their conversion to Christianity. In 1793, the mission was secularized and soon abandoned. Ten years later, it became a fortress housing the Mexican Army group the Second Flying Company of San Carlos de Parras, who likely gave the mission the name "Alamo".
Mexican soldiers held the mission until December 1835, when General Martin Perfecto de Cos surrendered it to the Texian Army following the siege of Bexar. A relatively small number of Texian soldiers then occupied the compound. Texian General Sam Houston believed the Texians did not have the manpower to hold the fort and ordered Colonel James Bowie to destroy it. Bowie chose to disregard those orders and instead worked with Colonel James C. Neill to fortify the mission. On February 23, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna led a large force of Mexican soldiers into San Antonio de Bexar and promptly initiated a siege. The siege ended on March 6, when the Mexican army attacked the Alamo; by the end of the Battle of the Alamo all or almost all of the defenders were killed. When the Mexican army retreated from Texas at the end of the Texas Revolution, they tore down many of the Alamo walls and burned some of the buildings.

The Battle of the Alamo (February 23 – March 6, 1836) was a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution. Following a 13-day siege, Mexican troops under President General Antonio López de Santa Anna launched an assault on the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar (modern-day San Antonio, Texas, USA). All but two of the Texian defenders were killed. Santa Anna's perceived cruelty during the battle inspired many Texians—both Texas settlers and adventurers from the United States—to join the Texian Army. Buoyed by a desire for revenge, the Texians defeated the Mexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto, on April 21, 1836, ending the revolution.
Several months previously, Texians had driven all Mexican troops out of Mexican Texas. Approximately 100 Texians were then garrisoned at the Alamo. The Texian force grew slightly with the arrival of reinforcements led by eventual Alamo co-commanders James Bowie and William B. Travis. On February 23, approximately 1,500 Mexican troops marched into San Antonio de Béxar as the first step in a campaign to re-take Texas. For the next 12 days the two armies engaged in several skirmishes with minimal casualties. Aware that his garrison could not withstand an attack by such a large force, Travis wrote multiple letters pleading for more men and supplies, but fewer than 100 reinforcements arrived.

David "Davy" Crockett (August 17, 1786 – March 6, 1836) was a celebrated 19th century American folk hero, frontiersman, soldier and politician. He is commonly referred to in popular culture by the epithet "King of the Wild Frontier". He represented Tennessee in the U.S. House of Representatives, served in the Texas Revolution, and died at the Battle of the Alamo.
Crockett grew up in East Tennessee, where he gained a reputation for hunting and storytelling. After being elected to the rank of colonel in the militia of Lawrence County, Tennessee, he was elected to the Tennessee state legislature in 1821. In 1826, Crockett was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Crockett vehemently opposed many of the policies of President Andrew Jackson, most notably the Indian Removal Act. Crockett's opposition to Jackson's policies led to his defeat in the 1834 elections, prompting his angry departure to Texas shortly thereafter. In early 1836, Crockett took part in the Texas Revolution and was killed at the Battle of the Alamo in March.

One of the most popular and successful American country and Western singers of his era, for most of his nearly four-decade career, Robbins was rarely far from the country music charts, and several of his songs also became pop hits.
The Alamo, originally known as Mission San Antonio de Valero, is a former Roman Catholic mission and fortress compound, now a museum, in San Antonio, Texas. The compound, which originally comprised a sanctuary and surrounding buildings, was built by the Spanish Empire in the 18th century for the education of local Native Americans after their conversion to Christianity. In 1793, the mission was secularized and soon abandoned. Ten years later, it became a fortress housing the Mexican Army group the Second Flying Company of San Carlos de Parras, who likely gave the mission the name "Alamo".
Mexican soldiers held the mission until December 1835, when General Martin Perfecto de Cos surrendered it to the Texian Army following the siege of Bexar. A relatively small number of Texian soldiers then occupied the compound. Texian General Sam Houston believed the Texians did not have the manpower to hold the fort and ordered Colonel James Bowie to destroy it. Bowie chose to disregard those orders and instead worked with Colonel James C. Neill to fortify the mission. On February 23, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna led a large force of Mexican soldiers into San Antonio de Bexar and promptly initiated a siege. The siege ended on March 6, when the Mexican army attacked the Alamo; by the end of the Battle of the Alamo all or almost all of the defenders were killed. When the Mexican army retreated from Texas at the end of the Texas Revolution, they tore down many of the Alamo walls and burned some of the buildings.

John Wayne's directorial debut The Alamo is set in 1836: Wayne plays Col. Davy Crockett, who, together with Colonels Jim Bowie (Richard Widmark) and William Travis (Laurence Harvey) and 184 hardy Americans and Texicans, defends the Alamo mission against the troops of Mexican general Santa Ana. There's a lot of macho byplay before the actual attack, including the famous "letter" scene in which Wayne craftily rouses the patriotic ire of his subordinates. Also appearing are Richard Boone as Sam Houston, and Chill Wills (whose somewhat tasteless Oscar campaign has since become legendary in the annals of shameless self-promotion) as Beekeeper. Wayne's production crew was compelled to reconstruct the Alamo in Bracketville, Texas, about a hundred miles from the actual site. Dimitri Tiomkin's score, including The Green Leaves of Summer, received generous airplay on the Top-40 radio outlets of America. Rumors persist that Wayne's old pal John Ford directed most of The Alamo; cut to 161 minutes for its general release, the film was restored to its original, 192-minute length in 1992.

Thanks to a series of movies about the famous Battle of the Alamo in San Antonio Texas, most Americans imagine a fight that took place mainly in front of the famous Alamo facade that's so recognizable. In fact. the battle actually occurred over a much larger area that was part of the remains of a sprawling mission complex built in the 1700s. No one knows where David Crockett actually died, but there's a good chance he wasn't standing on a rampart swinging his rifle at attackers who were trying to mob him. Thanks to a series of movies about the famous Battle of the Alamo in San Antonio Texas, most Americans imagine a fight that took place mainly in front of the famous Alamo facade that's so recognizable. In fact. the battle actually occurred over a much larger area that was part of the remains of a sprawling mission complex built in the 1700s.
No one knows where David Crockett actually died, but there's a good chance he wasn't standing on a rampart swinging his rifle at attackers who were trying to mob him. There are some who speculate he may have actually survived the battle and been executed afterward. Colonel Travis, the commander of the defenders, actually died in the first few minutes of the battle in an area more than 100 yards from there. It's believed Jim Bowie was killed in an area on the Plaza that is not even marked with a plaque of any kind today. If you don't already know where it is, you have to ask an Alamo guide to find out.
In any case, Alamo Plaza is the general area in front of the iconic "Church" facade that almost every American - certainly every Texan - would immediately recognize.
Alamo Plaza is surrounded now by several hotels, a huge mall, and dozens of tourist shops. Although the area nearby is highly commercialized, it is still a pleasant place to visit to learn more about one of the most famous places in America and what happened there on March 6th, 1836.

It was originally named Mission San Antonio de Valero, and served as home to missionaries and their Indian converts for nearly seventy years. The current Alamo complex, including the familiar facade and structure that used to serve as a mission church, covers 4.2 acres of ground in downtown San Antonio.
Approximately 2.5 million tourists visit the Alamo each year. Admission is free, and it is definitely one of the most interesting places to go and things to see not just in San Antonio, but in all of Texas.
The Alamo is the centerpiece of San Antonio's booming downtown tourist complex, which also includes the River Walk, the Tower of the Americas, La Villita (the Little Village) and the Rivercenter Mall.

El edificio conocido como "El Álamo," fue la capilla de la Misión San Antonio de Valero, fundada en 1716. En diciembre de 1835 los tejanos estaban en guerra por su independencia contra México. Miembros del ejército voluntario capturaron la ciudad de San Antonio, y ocuparon El Álamo. El líder del movimiento para la independencia de Texas, Sam Houston, aconsejó a los voluntarios que abandonaran El Álamo, pero éstos se negaron. En febrero de 1836 las tropas mexicanas bajo las órdenes del General Antonio López de Santa Ana comenzaron el sitio de El Álamo. Los tejanos contaban con 184 hombres y estaban bajo las órdenes del Coronel William B. Travis. También estaban presente el famoso Davy Crockett y James Bowie, quien estaba enfermo. Pakistan will acquire F-16s from elsewhere if the United States (US) does not arrange funding for the sale, Sartaj Aziz, the prime minister's adviser on foreign affairs, cautioned the US as both countries lock horns over the purchase of the fighter jets.
