The alphabetical list of philosophers is so large it had to be broken up into several pages. To look up a philosopher you know the name of, click on the first letter of his or her last name. To find philosophers by core area, field, major philosophical tradition, ethnicity, or time periods, see the subheadings further below.
A list is any enumeration of a set of items. List or lists may also refer to:
Crash Course (also known as Driving Academy) is a 1988 made for television teen film directed by Oz Scott.
Crash Course centers on a group of high schoolers in a driver’s education class; many for the second or third time. The recently divorced teacher, super-passive Larry Pearl, is on thin ice with the football fanatic principal, Principal Paulson, who is being pressured by the district superintendent to raise driver’s education completion rates or lose his coveted football program. With this in mind, Principal Paulson and his assistant, with a secret desire for his job, Abner Frasier, hire an outside driver’s education instructor with a very tough reputation, Edna Savage, aka E.W. Savage, who quickly takes control of the class.
The plot focuses mostly on the students and their interactions with their teachers and each other. In the beginning, Rico is the loner with just a few friends, Chadley is the bookish nerd with few friends who longs to be cool and also longs to be a part of Vanessa’s life who is the young, friendly and attractive girl who had to fake her mother’s signature on her driver’s education permission slip. Kichi is the hip-hop Asian kid who often raps what he has to say and constantly flirts with Maria, the rich foreign girl who thinks that the right-of-way on the roadways always goes to (insert awesomely fake foreign Latino accent) “my father’s limo”. Finally you have stereotypical football meathead J.J., who needs to pass his English exam to keep his eligibility and constantly asks out and gets rejected by Alice, the tomboy whose father owns “Santini & Son” Concrete Company. Alice is portrayed as being the “son” her father wanted.

"Sandman, i always enjoy your videos and hope you are doing well. Now on to the content... Female Philosophers. I fancy myself as a deep thinker and philosopher (cue the laugh track) and in the past i have thought of questions about human nature and the destiny of our world and sent them via text to male and female associates. Usually it worked out with me receiving responses from 80% of the men and less than 5% of the women, if at all. This is interesting on more than one level. First, it seems as a whole, women really don't like philosophy. Second, women seem to enjoy the power associated with politics, which i learned in a humanities class is directly related to philosophy. And thirdly I never hear men or women mentioning the existence of female philosophers, EVER. they are like a Pega...

Today Hank begins to teach you about Philosophy by discussing the historical origins of philosophy in ancient Greece, and its three main divisions: metaphysics, epistemology, and value theory. He will also introduce logic, and how you’re going to use it to understand and critically evaluate a whole host of different worldviews throughout this course. And also, hopefully, the rest of your life. -- Images and video via VideoBlocks or Wikimedia Commons, licensed under Creative Commons by 4.0: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ -- Produced in collaboration with PBS Digital Studios: http://youtube.com/pbsdigitalstudios Crash Course Philosophy is sponsored by Squarespace. http://www.squarespace.com/crashcourse -- Want to find Crash Course elsewhere on the internet? In this more personal talk, I respond to a frequently asked kind of questions about top 5 / top 10 lists I'd create about philosophers or philosophical texts. In this one, I discuss which 5 and which 10 (short list and longer short list) works I'd bring with me -- the texts I'd have to choose to be the only one's I'd get to read the rest of my life The top 5 list: Plato's Republic Augustine's City of God Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologiae Rene Descartes' Meditations G.W.F. Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit . The other 5 -- to make it a top 10: Aristotle's Metaphysics Blaise Pascal's Pensees Martin Heidegger's Being and Time Max Scheler's Formalism in Ethics Maurice Blondel's Action (1893) So, what would your list be?

This is the first in a new series of quarterly lectures and discussions, focused on understanding philosophers within their historical context, hosted by the Frank Weyenberg Library (in Mequon, WI). This talk focuses on the interconnections between the philosopher Aristotle, the city of Athens, and the Macedonian king Alexander the Great. In the course of the talk, I discuss Aristotle's connections with the Macedonian regime, his studies in Athens at Plato's Academy, his tutelage of a young Alexander, Alexander's military campaigns and cultural project, and the effects of Alexander's demise for Aristotle in Athens. The sessions to come will include: Anselm of Canterbury - in May Rene Descartes - in August Hannah Arendt - in November The intro music for this is Antonin Dvorak, Czech Sui...

In this third installment of our quarterly series, Philosophers in the Midst of History, I discuss the life, thought, and importance of Rene Descartes in his historical context. Descartes is rightly regarded as a "father of modern philosophy", and even as one of the fathers of modernity. But what is modernity, and what does it mean to be modern? Those are questions we begin with. A good bit of discussion is devoted to the extent and effects of the Wars of Religion that swept across Europe for over a hundred years following the beginnings of the Protestant Reformation. Descartes himself grew up in a culture that had seen wars over religious perspectives and political power, and his philosophical enterprise can be understood - at least in part - to be motivated as a response to those c...
Back before Pottermore, before Fantastic Beasts, and a Cursed Child, there were Seven Books. Seven amazing books about a boy wizard that left us with sometimes more mysteries than the boy and his friends managed to solve. Even now that the books have all been read and the universe is being expanded beyond The Boy Who Lived, there are some questions that we'll never have the answers to. To explore some of those questions and the sometimes clever, sometimes out there, explanations fans have come up with, here are 25 Harry Potter Fan Theories That Will Make You Think. 25 Harry Potter Fan Theories That Will Make You Think | List25 Horcrux Spell Crookshanks & Regulus Black Dursleys' Attitude Ronbledores Ginny's Love Potion JK Rowling & Rita Skeeter The Hufflepuff Secret Harry & Sirius Family...
This program examines the philosophies of British empiricists John Locke and George Berkeley. World-renowned author and professor Bryan Magee and philosopher Michael Ayers of Oxford interpret Locke’s skeptical theory that all knowledge is sensory and speculative, and that the true nature of the world can never be known, as an attack on Descartes’s theory of innate ideas. Conversely, Berkeley insists that we cannot have sensory knowledge of material substances because they exist only in our mind. Even the laws of nature, Berkeley says, are merely the regularities of our own perceptions or ideas.
Atlantis, a likely mythical island nation mentioned in Plato’s dialogues “Timaeus” and “Critias,” has been an object of fascination among western philosophers and historians for nearly 2,400 years. Plato (c.424–328 B.C.) describes it as a powerful and advanced kingdom that sank, in a night and a day, into the ocean around 9,600 B.C. The ancient Greeks were divided as to whether Plato’s story was to be taken as history or mere metaphor. Since the 19th century there has been renewed interest in linking Plato’s Atlantis to historical locations, most commonly the Greek island of Santorini, which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption around 1,600 B.C. Plato’s Critias says he heard the story of Atlantis from his grandfather, who had heard it from the Athenian statesman Solon (300 years before Pl...
