The warrior Cossacks of Ukraine - BBC News

Around 1500 the Cossacks gained momentum to become one of the most influential cultural forces for the eastern European world. History Of The Russian Cossacks Until World War 1 I THE GREAT WAR Special
The Cossacks are surrounded by myths and legends. For some they were the "Tsar's dogs" for others they were more comparable to the cowboys of the Wild West. In any case, their history and culture is unique and is deeply intertwined with the rise and end of the Romanov dynasty. And that's why we are taking a look further back than usual to introduce to the Cossacks.

Join the Cossack soldier Stepan as he tries to keep order in the battalion and help his people regain their independence.

The year is 1676, and a treaty has officially ended hostilities between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Ottoman Empire. Despite a serene sunset on the Dnipro river, the mood is tense for the Zaporozhian Cossacks. Renowned as one of Europe’s most formidable military forces, they are in the midst of a power struggle. Alex Gendler outlines a day in the life of a Cossack soldier.

Cossacks riding Russia's patriotic wave - BBC News
The Cossacks were Russian military horsemen who saw themselves as Orthodox Christian warriors, in voluntary service to the tsar. Repressed after the Bolshevik Revolution, since the collapse of the Soviet Union they have re-emerged and are trying to revive Cossack traditions. Ilya Okhotnikov served in Russia's special forces and comes from a long line of Cossacks. When he retired he moved out of the city and started building a traditional Cossack settlement where he is trying to continue the Cossack way of life.

For centuries, the European steppes were dominated by a unique warrior culture. The Cossacks were fiercely independent soldiers, and some of the elite cavalry of Poland and Russia through early-modern history.
The Cossacks, the newest expansion to Paradox Development Studios’ best-selling historical grand strategy game Europa Universalis IV, pay homage to these legendarily proud people with a ton of new features that enhance the diplomatic game and give you new things to tend to during peacetime. The Cossacks will come to digital retailers and the Paradox store in late 2015.
And, as always, even if you don’t buy The Cossacks, its release will be accompanied with a free major content update for all Europa Universalis IV players.
