The Devil Came on Horseback presents a first-person account of the genocide in Darfur. Former Marine Captain Brian Steidle joined the African Union in 2004 to help monitor the cease-fire in Sudan. As he puts it, All I had was a camera, a pen, and paper. I was totally unprepared for what I'd see.
An unarmed military civilian, he describes his observations, via voice-over and audio recordings, as filmmakers Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern alternate between their contemporary footage and his images of slaughtered civilians and incinerated villages. When his contract ends, Steidle leaves in disillusionment. He wrote his reports and took his pictures, but nothing changed.
Since reporters lacked the same degree of access, he goes to The New York Times, and they publish his photographs. The soldier-turned-activist proceeds to spread the word everywhere he can. Aside from Steidle, the film features his sister Gretchen Wallace, founder of Global Grassroots (an organization working with female victims in Sudan and Rwanda), and Senator Barack Obama, who has also made Darfur his personal mission.
The title comes from a loose translation of janjaweed, the government-backed Arab militias behind the atrocities to which Steidle bore witness. (Steidle and his sister use the same title for the book they wrote together.) As in their previous documentary, The Trials of Darryl Hunt, Sundberg and Stern maintain a measured tone, but their subject's horrifying images speak for themselves.

A brief overview of the Darfur conflict from a friend of mine who has spent a considerable amount of time "on the ground" there.
The overview describes three of the significant "drivers" that explain what is going on in Darfur, but also show why decreasing the misery is so difficult.
The three "drivers" are 1) ethnicity, 2) oil (mostly China, in the ongoing "scramble for Africa"), and 3) desertification/climate change.
I hope this overview is helpful. Any informative comments are greatly appreciated.
As a personal note, with the Darfur hell so centred around oil, I can't help but think of the Iraq hell, that also began in 2003, and has likely resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians—basically folks like you and me.
Don't you just dream of a time when enough people actually say, "No"—and it has meaning? Maybe that time is closer than we know.

Three years of fighting in Darfur have destroyed hundreds of villages, displaced 2.2 million and led to more than 400,000 deaths. President Bush has accused the government of Sudan of genocide, but the U.S. has taken few concrete actions to stop the fighting. Narrated by Sam Waterston, this documentary tells the story of those who have lost their loved ones to this war, those who are fighting to survive and those who are working to bring peace to the region.
It is up to us to tell US policy makers that they can not stand idly by while genocide unfolds. Together we can be a powerful voice for lifesaving action.

The civil war in Darfur is an often cited yet also very controversial example of a 'climate conflict’. We examine this debate and the case by introducing the ECC Factbook -- a visual and interactive tool informing policy makers and the general public about conflicts with an environmental dimension.
Livestock raiding and low intensity communal clashes over access to land and water have a long tradition among pastoralist and farming communities in Sudan’s western Darfur region. However, recurring droughts, famine and the outbreak of civil war in Darfur have propelled these conflicts to unprecedented levels of violence.

Darfur (Arabic: دار فور Dār Fūr, English: Realm of the Fur) is a region in western Sudan. An independent sultanate for several hundred years, it was incorporated into Sudan by Anglo-Egyptian forces in 1916. The region is divided into five federal states: Central Darfur, East Darfur, North Darfur, South Darfur and West Darfur. Because of the war in Darfur between Sudanese government forces and the non-Arab indigenous population, the region was in a state of humanitarian emergency between 2003 and 2010.
Darfur covers an area of some 493,180 square kilometers (190,420 sq mi)—approximately the size of Spain. It is largely an arid plateau with the Marrah Mountains (Jebel Marra), a range of volcanic peaks rising up to 3,042 meters (9,980 ft) of topographic prominence, in the center of the region. The region's main towns are Al Fashir, Nyala, and Geneina.

November 2008 General Martin Luther Agwais job is difficult - keep the peace in war-ravaged Darfur. But recently a new problem has presented itself the government-backed janjaweed has started targeting peacekeepers. Patrolling the vast, barren wastelands of West Sudan, General Agwais troops tread an uneasy line between rebels and government forces. His task is to prevent the violence that has already killed 300,000 civilians and threatens to engulf Sudan in civil war. The General is head of the UN-led African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur. But presently in Darfur there is no peace to keep, says General Agwai dryly. That makes our job difficult. The situation for the peacekeepers is deteriorating. Were now being targeted, Agwai tells us. In July this year peacekeeping forces were attacked in a brutal and highly organised way. Agwai believes that the government-backed Janjaweed were behind the attack. So does the UN. In peace talks Agwais forces are criticised by both the rebels and the government but Agwai points out that talking is preferable to fighting. I love it when I hear everyone criticising us, he says cheerfully. That means we are neutral. An impressive account of courage under fire. Drought, Migration and Civil War in Darfur (ECC Factbook Conflict Analysis)
The civil war in Darfur is an often cited yet also very controversial example of a 'climate conflict’. We examine this debate and the case by introducing the ECC Factbook -- a visual and interactive tool informing policy makers and the general public about conflicts with an environmental dimension. Livestock raiding and low intensity communal clashes over access to land and water have a long tradition among pastoralist and farming communities in Sudan’s western Darfur region. However, recurring droughts, famine and the outbreak of civil war in Darfur have propelled these conflicts to unprecedented levels of violence. The Devil Came on Horseback presents a first-person account of the genocide in Darfur. Former Marine Captain Brian Steidle joined the African Union in 2004 to help monitor the cease-fire in Sudan. As he puts it, All I had was a camera, a pen, and paper. I was totally unprepared for what I'd see.
An unarmed military civilian, he describes his observations, via voice-over and audio recordings, as filmmakers Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern alternate between their contemporary footage and his images of slaughtered civilians and incinerated villages. When his contract ends, Steidle leaves in disillusionment. He wrote his reports and took his pictures, but nothing changed.
Since reporters lacked the same degree of access, he goes to The New York Times, and they publish his photographs. The soldier-turned-activist proceeds to spread the word everywhere he can. Aside from Steidle, the film features his sister Gretchen Wallace, founder of Global Grassroots (an organization working with female victims in Sudan and Rwanda), and Senator Barack Obama, who has also made Darfur his personal mission.
The title comes from a loose translation of janjaweed, the government-backed Arab militias behind the atrocities to which Steidle bore witness. (Steidle and his sister use the same title for the book they wrote together.) As in their previous documentary, The Trials of Darryl Hunt, Sundberg and Stern maintain a measured tone, but their subject's horrifying images speak for themselves.

A brief overview of the Darfur conflict from a friend of mine who has spent a considerable amount of time "on the ground" there.
The overview describes three of the significant "drivers" that explain what is going on in Darfur, but also show why decreasing the misery is so difficult.
The three "drivers" are 1) ethnicity, 2) oil (mostly China, in the ongoing "scramble for Africa"), and 3) desertification/climate change.
I hope this overview is helpful. Any informative comments are greatly appreciated.
As a personal note, with the Darfur hell so centred around oil, I can't help but think of the Iraq hell, that also began in 2003, and has likely resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians—basically folks like you and me.
Don't you just dream of a time when enough people actually say, "No"—and it has meaning? Maybe that time is closer than we know.

For these innocent civilians, living on the edge of survival, their only hope is the dwindling number of humanitarian organizations willing to risk the dangers on the ground in Darfur to provide relief. International Medical Corps was one of the first relief organizations to arrive on the scene in Darfur, and remains there to this day. Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, IMC provides help in more than 25 countries and regions worldwide that have been ravaged by war and disaster. IMC's network of some 5,000 doctors, nurses and other health care professionals makes it one of the fastest, most effective emergency response agencies in the world. In Darfur, IMC has been providing critical emergency medical services to a target population of about 300,000. This includes operating seven primary health care centers and two mobile clinics aimed at improving access to health care, nutritional assistance, and clean water and sanitation. These facilities provide family medicine; pre-natal, maternal, and child health care; immunizations; referrals and transportation for secondary care; and health and hygiene education. The new embattled government is now struggling to cope with a bevy of issues, including sectarian rivalries, CIA drone strikes, and one of al Qaeda's most sophisticated branches. It now risks presiding over the failure of one of the world's most fragile countries.

While most of us were still hung up on grunge, the republics of the former Yugoslavia spent the early 90s hung up on seceding into their own countries and mass-murdering people over infinitesimal ethnic differences. And the mid 90s. And the late 90s. To commemorate 12 years without a major attempted genocide, we decided to rent a Yugo and take a road trip through the Balkans to see what's going on and try to wrap our thinkers around what was up with all that ethnic cleansin'.
Our first stop: A nostalgic amusement park in northern Serbia that recreates Marshall Tito's Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia with startling accuracy and grimness.

In the summer of 2009, Smith, along with VICE UK Editor Andy Capper, traveled to Liberias capital, Monrovia, to assess whether the war-ravaged country had moved past a decade of brutal violence. What they discovered is that despite the United Nations eventual intervention, most of Liberias young people still live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution.
The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias lie in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust. Americas one and only foray into African colonialism is keeping a very uneasy peace indeed.

Between their Nuclear programs and president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's disdain for diplomacy, Iran posses a legitimate threat to the rest of the world. Despite all this, or perhaps because of it, Iranian filmmakers are among most prolific and influential in the world today. Their government's influence over the film industry is unlike any other. In 1978, cinemas were burned to the ground after images of American decadence were shown on screen. The medium itself was outlawed until the Ayatollah Khamenei saw a film he liked, the cinemas were reopened, and the industry grew again.
Today, this revitalized passion for film has Iran making a major impact on the world. The country's cultural, national, and individual diversity is on view, in celluloid. In this episode, watch Shane Smith travel to Iran for the 3rd Annual Urban Film Festival in Tehran. We take you to film sets and sound stages where we meet Iran's top directors, actors, and clerics.
