Infant

An infant (from the Latin word infans, meaning "unable to speak" or "speechless") is the very young offspring of a human or animal. When applied to humans, the term is usually considered synonymous with baby or bairn (in Scottish English), but the latter is commonly applied to the young of any animal. When a human child learns to walk, the term toddler may be used instead.

The term infant is typically applied to young children between the ages of 1 month and 12 months; however, definitions may vary between birth and 1 year of age, or even between birth and 2 years of age. A newborn is an infant who is only hours, days, or up to a few weeks old. In medical contexts, newborn or neonate (from Latin, neonatus, newborn) refers to an infant in the first 28 days after birth; the term applies to premature infants, postmature infants, and full term infants. Before birth, the term fetus is used. In the UK, infant is a term that can be applied to school children aged between four and seven. As a legal terminology, "infancy" continues from birth until age 18.

Olympic Games

The modern Olympic Games or Olympics (French: Jeux olympiques) are the leading international sporting event featuring summer and winter sports competitions in which thousands of athletes from around the world participate in a variety of competitions. The Olympic Games are considered to be the world's foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating. The Olympic Games are held every four years, with the Summer and Winter Games alternating by occurring every four years but two years apart.

Their creation was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games, which were held in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894. The IOC is the governing body of the Olympic Movement, with the Olympic Charter defining its structure and authority.

The evolution of the Olympic Movement during the 20th and 21st centuries has resulted in several changes to the Olympic Games. Some of these adjustments include the creation of the Winter Olympic Games for ice and winter sports, the Paralympic Games for athletes with a disability, and the Youth Olympic Games for teenage athletes. The IOC has had to adapt to a variety of economic, political, and technological advancements. As a result, the Olympics has shifted away from pure amateurism, as envisioned by Coubertin, to allowing participation of professional athletes. The growing importance of mass media created the issue of corporate sponsorship and commercialization of the Games. World wars led to the cancellation of the 1916, 1940, and 1944 Games. Large boycotts during the Cold War limited participation in the 1980 and 1984 Games.

Wayne Shorter’s ballad Infant Eyes: Performed with an Ableton Push triggering Kontakt (+ a foot pedal) Edited Feb 2017: The Push, Novation LaunchPad and Linnstrument, have the same 2D note layout as bass and violin: perfect fourth intervals going up (five semitones) which in reverse is therefore perfect fifths / seven semitones (so you always find an F above a C, and a G below a C etc.) , and semitones on the horizontal axis, going higher in pitch left to right as with a piano. I find it to be quicker to get comfortable playing chords on this device, because of what is called “transpositional invariance” - what that term means is that one hand shape for a chord quality in a particular voicing is the same when transposed to all 12 keys. (I DO NOT ADVOCATE THE “IN-KEY” MODE OF THE PUSH! I BELIEVE CHROMATIC SHOULD BE DEFAULT) Since I discovered this I abandoned the keyboard and I’ve devoted the past year and a half to a practice regime with the Push. I’ve been translating learning materials from Mark Levine, Jerry Coker and Jamey Aebersold (and various others) to the Push, and along the way held numerous insightful conversations with my instrumentalist friends and associates, watched various DVDs and youtube channels on different aspects of playing jazz. I am my own guinea pig here, learning how to do it, while simultaneously learning how to teach it. I’ll be posting more videos soon that demonstrate some of what I’ve been uncovering, since I made this one in July 2016, and as I write it is February 2017, so an update is overdue, I’ve developed learning materials for all of this, under the wider topic of Electronic Music Performance. I spent a good deal of time writing and creating graphic illustrations about learning chords, scales, patterns, harmony principles, melody, from scratch, on a Push (or LaunchPad or Linnstrument) Most recently I gave a Masterclass at the UK’s Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM), and I presently have a couple of private tuition students. Regarding the video: Notice that some pads light up even though I’m not pressing them, because many notes are accessible from two pads, for example there are two separate pads you can press to trigger F3 and if you press either of them, then both light up. Fingering is it’s own challenge on these devices. There’s a lot of new things to learn, some intervals are harder to play, but most are easier, and there’s many things that you couldn’t do on a piano - for example reaching across three octaves with just one hand becomes possible. “Quartal” harmony comes to the forefront because of the vertical note layout. McCoy Tyner style comping of fourth chord voicings and what is called the So What chord is really easy. Many patterns such as arpeggiated chords I would suggest are no harder but no easier either than initially learning on the piano. The Push has it’s own challenge of requiring a rather spidery employment of your hand, to run up and down in something like alternating minor and major thirds, but once you’ve locked it down in one chord or scale it’s way easier to transpose across all twelve keys.
