"If someone had any doubt over the capacity of
Rio de Janeiro to build a technically strong and consistent project, I think that this report ends any doubts over the consistency and strength of Rio de Janeiro's bid."

"(
Chicago,
Madrid and
Tokyo) are fantastic cities in fantastic countries, but, I think that for the next
30 days, we will have to continue our work to prove that Rio de Janeiro certainly is the best option and a boost for the
Olympic Movement. This (report) is certainly a boost for our bid and, if I can say something to you, it's that, the
International Olympic Committee is telling us: 'We believe in Rio de Janeiro'!"

"When
Sydney won the bid for the
2000 Olympic Games, they had an accommodation infrastructure similar to Rio de Janeiro (has now). When they won the right in
1993, their solution to increase the number of available rooms was to use the cruise ships."

STORYLINE:
Rio de Janeiro officials welcomed Wednesday's International Olympic Committee (
IOC)
Evaluation Report as a major boost to their bid to host the
2016 Olympic Games.
Brazil's
Minister of Sport, Orlando Silva, said it cleared away any doubts over the "strength and consistency" of Rio's bid after the Brazilian city received the best report of the four candidates.
Rio is competing with Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid for the right to host the
Summer Games in 2016 - the winning bid will be announced in
Copenhagen in October.
Brazilian officials held a news conference following the publication of a report by the visiting International Olympic Committee Evaluation
Commission.
It would be
South America's first
Olympic venue.
Rio backers were also boosted by the report's findings that a Summer Games in Rio would benefit from the experience and knowledge gained through organising the
2007 Pan-American Games - which is considered the best in the history of the competition, according to the Pan-American
Sports Organisation.
Rio Mayor, Eduardo Paes, emphasised that his city would continue to push for more votes in the run-up to the decision by the IOC
General Assembly, in
Copenhagen, Denmark, on 2
October, 2009.
Rio had the fewest direct criticisms of all the bid cities, but the IOC Commission noted that the city needed to use six cruise ships to help meet the demand for accommodation for the
Games.
Rio State Governor Sergio Cabral defended Rio's position, pointing out that
Sydney 2000, still considered the best modern
Olympics, had a similar policy.
The host city for the 2016 Olympic Games will be chosen at the
121st IOC Session
Following official presentations by the candidate cities, there will be a presentation by the Evaluation Commission Chairwoman,
Nawal El Moutawakel, before the
IOC members cast their votes.
