Samsun Turkey
City in northern Turkey with 360,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate), on the Black Sea, between the Kizil and Yesil rivers. It is the capital of Samsun Province with 1.2 million inhabitants (2004 estimate), and the largest Turkish Black Sea city.
Samsun is the capital of a fertile region, which is one of the largest producers of Turkish tobacco. Other important agricultural products are wool, cereals, hides and vegetables. Local industries produce fertilizers and textiles. Samsun's harbour is well protected, and was modernized and expanded in the 1960's.
Samsun is connected by railways and road to Sivas 300 km south and other smaller towns in Anatolia, and by road to Ankara 400 km southwest. Iron is transported to Samsun from Divrigi. The local airport has connections with Ankara and Istanbul.
Modern Samsun houses absolutely no monuments from its long history.
History
1182 BCE: Phrygians destroy a city on the location of future Samsun.
562: Founded by the Greeks as the trade colony Amisus.
4th century: Comes under control of the kings of Pontus.
71: Burned down by its defenders, when captured by the Romans.
12th century: Captured by the Seljuq Turks, who renames it Samsun.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) continues to suffer in Samsun, a northern province of 1.3 million residents in the Black Sea region, as a result of unfulfilled pledges, economic woes and corruption scandals.
Although the AK Party is still the favored party in the province, its campaign lacks enthusiasm and AK Party candidates are effectively absent from the field, confining themselves to hall meetings with screened guests, according to the several accounts provided by the opposition candidates.
“They do not want to expose themselves to backlash from voters on the streets that may hurt their campaign,” Aslan Karanfil, a former bureaucrat and an active campaigner on behalf of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), told Today's Zaman.
“There is renewed vigor in the opposition parties' campaign this time around in contrast to the 2011 parliamentary election,” he added.
Corruption investigations that implicated senior government officials have also taken a toll on the popularity of the AK Party, he underlined.
Karanfil acknowledges that the opposition is facing an uphill battle because the ruling party is illegally using state resources for campaign purposes.
Not only have the government's resources been supporting AK Party candidates at taxpayers' expense, so have the governor, mayors and local civil servants who are closely affiliated with the AK Party.
The AK Party has plastered ads over some 10,000 square meters of billboard space, which is quite unprecedented, Karanfil says.
Nevertheless, both the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) vigorously renewed their campaigns in this province in contrast to the AK Party.
The MHP has top-notch economist Erhan Usta as the leading candidate in Samsun province. A graduate of Northeastern University, Usta served as the deputy undersecretary at the Ministry of Development.
“Samsun has been performing very badly in economic terms and [is] way below the national average,” Usta told Today's Zaman.
Unemployment is on the rise, the capacity utilization in industry is low and migration outflow is increasing, he said.
According to the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat), the rate of net migration in 2014 was -2.7 percent for Samsun.
Usta predicts the national economy will grow around 2 percent this year, way below the 5 percent average among emerging economies.
“It will be difficult to find financing with this slow growth,” he warned.
The CHP brought new enthusiasm to the campaign in Samsun by conducting primaries to determine its candidates as opposed to party leadership handing down names.
The CHP's economic program also energized its campaign in Samsun, according to Dinçer Soylu, the CHP provincial chairman.
“What we offer in terms of increased benefits to pensioners, laborers, farmers, the unemployed, students and families that struggle with low income and heavy debt has not been emulated by other parties,” he said.
Soylu criticized the government for wiping out the industrial base in the province and reducing the whole economy to shopping malls and a coal-fired power plant.
Predictions for the June 7 general election are often based on the results of local elections in March 2014 which determined, among others, the distribution of seats in provincial councils. The percentages political parties obtained in provincial councils are generally accepted as the best indicator of how people will vote in national elections.
In Samsun, the AK Party received 49.8 percent of the vote in provincial council elections, a drop of some 12 percentage points from the results of the 2011 national election.
The ruling party won six deputy seats out of nine available in Samsun in the 2011 election. The CHP got two seats with 21.7 percent, while the MHP received one seat with 11.3 percent.
The AK Party is expected to lose one seat to the MHP, as the nationalists are picking up more support for the June election.
The AK Party's popularity has been eroding in the predominantly center-right province, as the party is no longer seen as representing progress.

Bafra is found in the west of Pontus (a district of Samsun Province) on the shores of the Black sea in todays Turkey.
Bafra is a very touchy region for the Pontians b/c of the blood filled history and it is the reason it is more dominent "Turkish" then mixed with others, you will not find any Rum (Pontian) speaking inhabitance and some say their is a negative vibe towards the Greeks....
In the video we are welcomed by a local village and their dance group, along with traditional Zourna and Daoul. We were met by the local mayor and given a great dinner. We also get a chance to dance together, I noticed they enjoy the "embropis" style of dance in this region (we sometimes call it Lahana).
After that we set of down the river (which is Damed and made much bigger then it was) and you cannot help but to notice the old "Persian" tradition of tombs in the walls and the large caves.
We stop at a large cave opening which has much historic significance...
In this cave many men fought against the Sultan, who battered it days, he even brang in cannons, for almost a week. At the end, the men who hadn't lost their lives saved the last bullet for themselves. Entering the cave the Sultans men started to destroy the cave and noticed a draft coming from behind a icon of the virgin Mary, what they discovered was a tunnel that led all the way to the other side (this is pointed out in the video)... there they found all the village women and children who were deported to Samsun.
On the road to Samsun they were followed by horses holding large bags. As they walked they stopped at a crossroad and the women herd the Sultan order the soldiers to "take the bags full of the soldiers heads to another place" thus they found out the tragic end to the males of the village.
How do we know this ???
In this group their was a little boy, who was about to be taken from his mother but as they went to grab him he lifted his hands, they noticed that he had no hair under his arms so they let him stay, he managed to escape on the way, made his way to the middle of Anatolia and from their to Greece....
Tragic, and a little graphic, but true... In retaliation other village rebels burnt a entire Turkish village, many say their were civilian casualties inc women and children, thus why Greeks are not liked in these parts.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What you dont see is that we were accompanied by civilian dressed Police, actually came in the Bus with us, they even showed us their badge, we sang and played Kemence together, it was the first Kemence player who did not know how to speak Rumce/Rum (Pontiaka). He seamed surprised about our Kemence as well.... We were also put on Turkish national TV, I was interviewed but didn't get to see it on TV that night!!!

A minibus and a car collided on Samsun-Ordu road near Terme district of Samsun province in northern Turkey at about midnight on Friday. 6 people; Ahmet Bodur, Emine Akgül, Şehri Akgül, Soner Akgül, Caner Akgül, and a 7-year-old Yusuf Akgül, the latter 5 from same family, were killed in the accident and 4 other wounded.
The car split into two with the impact of the collision, and the minibus’s LPG tank caught fire and the victims were burnt in the flames of the tank.
The injured members of the same family; Songül Akgül, Ali Akgül, Yücel Akgül, and İmdat Akgül, were taken to Terme State hospital from where they were referred to Samsun Training and Research Hospital.

Paleolithic artifacts found in the Tekkeköy Caves can be seen in Samsun Archaeology Museum.
The earliest layer excavated of the höyük of Dündartepe revealed a Chalcolithic settlement. Early Bronze Age and Hittite settlements were also found there[2] and at Tekkeköy.
Tumuli, containing tombs dated between 300BC and 30BC, can be seen at Amisos Hill.
Samsun (then known as Amisos, alternative spelling Amisus) was settled between the years of 760 - 750 BC by people from Miletus,[3] who established a flourishing trade relationship with the ancient peoples of Anatolia. The city's ideal combination of fertile ground and shallow waters attracted numerous traders.
In the 3rd century BC the city came under the expanded rule of the Kingdom of Pontus. The Amisos treasure may have belonged to one of the kings. The Kingdom of Pontus had been part of the empire of Alexander the Great. However, the empire was fractured soon after Alexander's death in the 4th century BC. At its height, the kingdom controlled the north of central Anatolia and mercantile towns on the northern Black Sea shores.
The Romans took over in 47 BC and Amisos became part of Bithynia et Pontus province (and later Dioecesis Pontica) of the eastern Roman Empire.
For the period after the fall of Rome the Eastern Roman Empire is now called the Byzantine Empire. The city was part of the theme of Armeniakon.[4]
Samsun Castle was built.
When Constantinople was conquered in 1204 by the Fourth Crusade, Amisos was governed by a prudent official named Sabbas, who was accordingly popular. When the army of the Trebizond Empire under Emperor Alexios I appeared before its walls and demanded allegiance to Trebizond, Sabbas refused; the town was subjected to a siege until help arrived from the Sultan of Iconium. Knowing full well he lacked the resources to keep this city independent, Sabbas eventually acknowledged the nominal rule of Theodore Laskaris.[5][unreliable source?]
Samsun was one of the Genoese colonies.
The city is both an Eastern Orthodox and a Roman Catholic titular see.
Under the Ottomans the city became part of the Sanjak of Canik (Turkish: Canik Sancağı), which was at first part of Rûm Eyalet.
In the later Ottoman period the land around the town mainly produced tobacco. The town was connected to the railway system in the second half of the 19th century, and tobacco trade boomed.
Replica of the cargo ship SS Bandırma, which carried Atatürk from Istanbul and arrived in Samsun on May 19, 1919, the date which traditionally marks the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence.
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk established the Turkish liberation movement in Samsun on May 19, 1919, the date which traditionally marks the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence. Later in the war the city was bombarded. As of 1920, Samsun's population totaled about 36,000.[6]

Samsun Province (Turkish: Samsun ili ) is a province of Turkey on the Black Sea coast with a population of 1,252,693 (2010). Its adjacent provinces are Sinop on the northwest, Çorum on the west, Amasya on the south, Tokat on the southeast, and Ordu on the east. Its traffic code is 55.

A traffic accident in the province of Samsun in northern Turkey left 6 people, including a 7-month-old baby, dead and 4 others wounded when a minibus collided into a car… A minibus and a car collided on Samsun-Ordu road near Terme district of Samsun province in northern Turkey at about midnight on Friday. 6 people; Ahmet Bodur, Emine Akgül, Şehri Akgül, Soner Akgül, Caner Akgül, and a 7-year-old Yusuf Akgül, the latter 5 from same family, were killed in the accident and 4 other wounded. The car split into two with the impact of the collision, and the minibus’s LPG tank caught fire and the victims were burnt in the flames of the tank. The injured members of the same family; Songül Akgül, Ali Akgül, Yücel Akgül, and İmdat Akgül, were taken to Terme State hospital from where they were referred to Samsun Training and Research Hospital. -

The earliest layer excavated of the höyük of Dündartepe revealed a Chalcolithic settlement. Early Bronze Age and Hittite settlements were also found there[2] and at Tekkeköy. Tumuli, containing tombs dated between 300BC and 30BC, can be seen at Amisos Hill. Samsun (then known as Amisos, alternative spelling Amisus) was settled between the years of 760 - 750 BC by people from Miletus,[3] who established a flourishing trade relationship with the ancient peoples of Anatolia. The city's ideal combination of fertile ground and shallow waters attracted numerous traders. In the 3rd century BC the city came under the expanded rule of the Kingdom of Pontus. The Amisos treasure may have belonged to one of the kings. The Kingdom of Pontus had been part of the empire of Alexander the Great. However, the empire was fractured soon after Alexander's death in the 4th century BC. At its height, the kingdom controlled the north of central Anatolia and mercantile towns on the northern Black Sea shores. The Romans took over in 47 BC and Amisos became part of Bithynia et Pontus province (and later Dioecesis Pontica) of the eastern Roman Empire. For the period after the fall of Rome the Eastern Roman Empire is now called the Byzantine Empire. The city was part of the theme of Armeniakon.[4] Samsun Castle was built. When Constantinople was conquered in 1204 by the Fourth Crusade, Amisos was governed by a prudent official named Sabbas, who was accordingly popular. When the army of the Trebizond Empire under Emperor Alexios I appeared before its walls and demanded allegiance to Trebizond, Sabbas refused; the town was subjected to a siege until help arrived from the Sultan of Iconium. Knowing full well he lacked the resources to keep this city independent, Sabbas eventually acknowledged the nominal rule of Theodore Laskaris.[5][unreliable source?] Samsun was one of the Genoese colonies. Turkey’s Supreme Election Board (YSK) announced June 9 the temporary results of the June 7 general elections, but the exact number of deputies that will represent the four parties at the parliament remains uncertain, mainly due to ongoing objections in at least four places. Voter turnout reached 84 percent, according to the official announcement, as 47.5 million out of 56.6 million registered citizens cast their votes. Nearly 1.35 million of the votes, however, were invalid. In accordance, the Justice and Development Party (AKP) netted more than 18.86 million votes, 40.87 percent of the total, as the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) won 24.96 percent with 11.6 million votes. The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) got 7.6 million votes, or 18.29 percent, which was above the 6 million votes or 13.12 percent by the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP). But the latter has caught the nationalist party in parliament members, which is linked to the quotas of the country’s 81 provinces. Along with objections to the vote count, the votes abroad, a first for Turkey’s general election, has also made calculations rather complicated, as this new input was proportionally distributed to all provinces. Several independent deputies from Istanbul filed objections to the election results in the city, claiming that the ballots were confusing to voters. Ersan Gökgöz and Levent Sekban who were independent candidates for Istanbul 1st region parliamentary seats, applied to the YSK to cancel the elections for the city. They said in their objection that many voters had put their seal on both a party and an independent deputy, due to the confusing design of the ballot papers. More than 500,000 votes in Istanbul were invalid. In Black Sea province of Samsun, the AKP provincial branch has applied to the YSK over the results. Six people have died in a major traffic accident on one of Turkey’s main highways. Two buses were involved in two collisions in the early hours of Wednesday morning on Turkey’s Trans-European Motorway; 37 people were also injured. Bad weather battering Turkey has stalled rescue efforts to save 10 seamen trapped on a cargo ship which ran ashore near the northern port of Samsun. Samsun is the capital of a fertile region, which is one of the largest producers of Turkish tobacco. Other important agricultural products are wool, cereals, hides and vegetables. Local industries produce fertilizers and textiles. Samsun's harbour is well protected, and was modernized and expanded in the 1960's.
Samsun is connected by railways and road to Sivas 300 km south and other smaller towns in Anatolia, and by road to Ankara 400 km southwest. Iron is transported to Samsun from Divrigi. The local airport has connections with Ankara and Istanbul.
Modern Samsun houses absolutely no monuments from its long history.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) continues to suffer in Samsun, a northern province of 1.3 million residents in the Black Sea region, as a result of unfulfilled pledges, economic woes and corruption scandals.
Although the AK Party is still the favored party in the province, its campaign lacks enthusiasm and AK Party candidates are effectively absent from the field, confining themselves to hall meetings with screened guests, according to the several accounts provided by the opposition candidates.
“They do not want to expose themselves to backlash from voters on the streets that may hurt their campaign,” Aslan Karanfil, a former bureaucrat and an active campaigner on behalf of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), told Today's Zaman.
“There is renewed vigor in the opposition parties' campaign this time around in contrast to the 2011 parliamentary election,” he added.
Corruption investigations that implicated senior government officials have also taken a toll on the popularity of the AK Party, he underlined.
Karanfil acknowledges that the opposition is facing an uphill battle because the ruling party is illegally using state resources for campaign purposes.
Not only have the government's resources been supporting AK Party candidates at taxpayers' expense, so have the governor, mayors and local civil servants who are closely affiliated with the AK Party.
The AK Party has plastered ads over some 10,000 square meters of billboard space, which is quite unprecedented, Karanfil says.
Nevertheless, both the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) vigorously renewed their campaigns in this province in contrast to the AK Party.
The MHP has top-notch economist Erhan Usta as the leading candidate in Samsun province. A graduate of Northeastern University, Usta served as the deputy undersecretary at the Ministry of Development.
“Samsun has been performing very badly in economic terms and [is] way below the national average,” Usta told Today's Zaman.
Unemployment is on the rise, the capacity utilization in industry is low and migration outflow is increasing, he said.
According to the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat), the rate of net migration in 2014 was -2.7 percent for Samsun.
Usta predicts the national economy will grow around 2 percent this year, way below the 5 percent average among emerging economies.
“It will be difficult to find financing with this slow growth,” he warned.
The CHP brought new enthusiasm to the campaign in Samsun by conducting primaries to determine its candidates as opposed to party leadership handing down names.
The CHP's economic program also energized its campaign in Samsun, according to Dinçer Soylu, the CHP provincial chairman.
“What we offer in terms of increased benefits to pensioners, laborers, farmers, the unemployed, students and families that struggle with low income and heavy debt has not been emulated by other parties,” he said.
Soylu criticized the government for wiping out the industrial base in the province and reducing the whole economy to shopping malls and a coal-fired power plant.
Predictions for the June 7 general election are often based on the results of local elections in March 2014 which determined, among others, the distribution of seats in provincial councils. The percentages political parties obtained in provincial councils are generally accepted as the best indicator of how people will vote in national elections.
In Samsun, the AK Party received 49.8 percent of the vote in provincial council elections, a drop of some 12 percentage points from the results of the 2011 national election.
The ruling party won six deputy seats out of nine available in Samsun in the 2011 election. The CHP got two seats with 21.7 percent, while the MHP received one seat with 11.3 percent.
The AK Party is expected to lose one seat to the MHP, as the nationalists are picking up more support for the June election.
The AK Party's popularity has been eroding in the predominantly center-right province, as the party is no longer seen as representing progress.

Bafra is a very touchy region for the Pontians b/c of the blood filled history and it is the reason it is more dominent "Turkish" then mixed with others, you will not find any Rum (Pontian) speaking inhabitance and some say their is a negative vibe towards the Greeks....
In the video we are welcomed by a local village and their dance group, along with traditional Zourna and Daoul. We were met by the local mayor and given a great dinner. We also get a chance to dance together, I noticed they enjoy the "embropis" style of dance in this region (we sometimes call it Lahana).
After that we set of down the river (which is Damed and made much bigger then it was) and you cannot help but to notice the old "Persian" tradition of tombs in the walls and the large caves.
We stop at a large cave opening which has much historic significance...
In this cave many men fought against the Sultan, who battered it days, he even brang in cannons, for almost a week. At the end, the men who hadn't lost their lives saved the last bullet for themselves. Entering the cave the Sultans men started to destroy the cave and noticed a draft coming from behind a icon of the virgin Mary, what they discovered was a tunnel that led all the way to the other side (this is pointed out in the video)... there they found all the village women and children who were deported to Samsun.
On the road to Samsun they were followed by horses holding large bags. As they walked they stopped at a crossroad and the women herd the Sultan order the soldiers to "take the bags full of the soldiers heads to another place" thus they found out the tragic end to the males of the village.
How do we know this ???
In this group their was a little boy, who was about to be taken from his mother but as they went to grab him he lifted his hands, they noticed that he had no hair under his arms so they let him stay, he managed to escape on the way, made his way to the middle of Anatolia and from their to Greece....
Tragic, and a little graphic, but true... In retaliation other village rebels burnt a entire Turkish village, many say their were civilian casualties inc women and children, thus why Greeks are not liked in these parts.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What you dont see is that we were accompanied by civilian dressed Police, actually came in the Bus with us, they even showed us their badge, we sang and played Kemence together, it was the first Kemence player who did not know how to speak Rumce/Rum (Pontiaka). He seamed surprised about our Kemence as well.... We were also put on Turkish national TV, I was interviewed but didn't get to see it on TV that night!!!

Paleolithic artifacts found in the Tekkeköy Caves can be seen in Samsun Archaeology Museum.
The earliest layer excavated of the höyük of Dündartepe revealed a Chalcolithic settlement. Early Bronze Age and Hittite settlements were also found there[2] and at Tekkeköy.
Tumuli, containing tombs dated between 300BC and 30BC, can be seen at Amisos Hill.
Samsun (then known as Amisos, alternative spelling Amisus) was settled between the years of 760 - 750 BC by people from Miletus,[3] who established a flourishing trade relationship with the ancient peoples of Anatolia. The city's ideal combination of fertile ground and shallow waters attracted numerous traders.
In the 3rd century BC the city came under the expanded rule of the Kingdom of Pontus. The Amisos treasure may have belonged to one of the kings. The Kingdom of Pontus had been part of the empire of Alexander the Great. However, the empire was fractured soon after Alexander's death in the 4th century BC. At its height, the kingdom controlled the north of central Anatolia and mercantile towns on the northern Black Sea shores.
The Romans took over in 47 BC and Amisos became part of Bithynia et Pontus province (and later Dioecesis Pontica) of the eastern Roman Empire.
For the period after the fall of Rome the Eastern Roman Empire is now called the Byzantine Empire. The city was part of the theme of Armeniakon.[4]
Samsun Castle was built.
When Constantinople was conquered in 1204 by the Fourth Crusade, Amisos was governed by a prudent official named Sabbas, who was accordingly popular. When the army of the Trebizond Empire under Emperor Alexios I appeared before its walls and demanded allegiance to Trebizond, Sabbas refused; the town was subjected to a siege until help arrived from the Sultan of Iconium. Knowing full well he lacked the resources to keep this city independent, Sabbas eventually acknowledged the nominal rule of Theodore Laskaris.[5][unreliable source?]
Samsun was one of the Genoese colonies.
The city is both an Eastern Orthodox and a Roman Catholic titular see.
Under the Ottomans the city became part of the Sanjak of Canik (Turkish: Canik Sancağı), which was at first part of Rûm Eyalet.
In the later Ottoman period the land around the town mainly produced tobacco. The town was connected to the railway system in the second half of the 19th century, and tobacco trade boomed.
Replica of the cargo ship SS Bandırma, which carried Atatürk from Istanbul and arrived in Samsun on May 19, 1919, the date which traditionally marks the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence.
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk established the Turkish liberation movement in Samsun on May 19, 1919, the date which traditionally marks the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence. Later in the war the city was bombarded. As of 1920, Samsun's population totaled about 36,000.[6]
A US aırforce radio group was based in Samsun from 1956 until closure in the early 70s

Turkey’s Supreme Election Board (YSK) announced June 9 the temporary results of the June 7 general elections, but the exact number of deputies that will represent the four parties at the parliament remains uncertain, mainly due to ongoing objections in at least four places.
Voter turnout reached 84 percent, according to the official announcement, as 47.5 million out of 56.6 million registered citizens cast their votes. Nearly 1.35 million of the votes, however, were invalid.
In accordance, the Justice and Development Party (AKP) netted more than 18.86 million votes, 40.87 percent of the total, as the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) won 24.96 percent with 11.6 million votes.
The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) got 7.6 million votes, or 18.29 percent, which was above the 6 million votes or 13.12 percent by the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP). But the latter has caught the nationalist party in parliament members, which is linked to the quotas of the country’s 81 provinces.
Along with objections to the vote count, the votes abroad, a first for Turkey’s general election, has also made calculations rather complicated, as this new input was proportionally distributed to all provinces.
Several independent deputies from Istanbul filed objections to the election results in the city, claiming that the ballots were confusing to voters.
Ersan Gökgöz and Levent Sekban who were independent candidates for Istanbul 1st region parliamentary seats, applied to the YSK to cancel the elections for the city.
They said in their objection that many voters had put their seal on both a party and an independent deputy, due to the confusing design of the ballot papers. More than 500,000 votes in Istanbul were invalid.
In Black Sea province of Samsun, the AKP provincial branch has applied to the YSK over the results. AKP Samsun provincial head Muharrem Göksel said they have made objections to the YSK and expect to get six deputies if they can receive 408 votes after their objections.
He said they have applied in all districts for a recounting of the invalid votes.
In Giresun, another Black Sea province, the ruling AKP also applied to the YSK to recount the votes.
In Eastern province of Iğdır, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) also objected to the election results on the grounds that invalid votes were cast.

On the 23rd of March 2008, Turkish media reported the finding of a mass grave containing the human remains of roughly 10 bodies during excavation work on the grounds of a primary school in the village Yazilar which is located 20 km from Tekkeköy, a region in the province of Samsounta (Samsun) in western Pontos (current day Turkey).
According to the reports of the villager, the remains belong to Greeks who primarily lived in the village which up until the Genocide (1916-22).
The residents of the village reported their finding to local officials who showed an indifference to the matter and subsequently proceeded to throw the remains in a nearby river. This Mass Grave of the Greeks of Yazilar, Greeks who in all likelihood did not receive a proper burial along with over 1 million Greeks of Thrace and Asia Minor, perished during one of the first genocides of the 20th century.

Massen-Grab in Samsun gefunden
Am 23. März 2008 berichteten türkische Medien über die Entdeckung eines Massengrabs, in dem sich die menschlichen Überreste von ungefähr 10 Körpern befinden. Die Entdeckung erfolgte während des Aufbau einer Grundschule auf den Fudamenten einer griechischen Kirche im Dorf Yazilar, das 20 sich Kilometer von Tekkeköy befindet, eine Region in der Provinz von Samsounta (Samsun) in West-Pontos (gegenwärtig in der Türkei).
Entsprechend den Aussagen von Ansässigen, werden die Überreste Pontos-Griechen zugeordnet, die vor dem Völkermord (1916-22) dort hauptsächlich gelebt haben..
Der Fund wurde von den Dorfeinwohnern lokalen Behörden angezeigt, die jedoch zeigten eine Gleichgültigkeit bezüglich der Angelegenheit und so warfen sie die menschlichen Überreste in einem nahe gelegenen Fluss. Diese Pontos-Griechen des Massengrabes von Yazilar gehören zu den über 1 Million Griechen aus Thrakien und Kleinasien, die während des ersten Völkermordes des 20. Jahrhunderts umgebracht wurden.

Ομαδικός τάφος Ποντίων στη Σαμψούντα
Παλιές πληγές ανοίγει ο τυχαίος εντοπισμός ομαδικού τάφου σε χωριό της Σαμψούντας. Τα οστά βρέθηκαν κατά τη διάρκεια εργασιών σε σχολείο του χωριού Γιαζιλάρ (Yazılar), που απέχει 20 χλμ από το Τεκέκιοϊ (Tekkeköy), έδρα της ομώνυμης επαρχίας του νομού Σαμσούντας, στην περιοχή του Δυτικού Πόντου.
Σύμφωνα με τις δηλώσεις των χωρικών, τα οστά ανήκουν σε Έλληνες κατοίκους του χωριού, το οποίο μέχρι τη Γενοκτονία (1916-1922) αμιγώς ελληνικό ήταν.
Οι κάτοικοι του χωριού ανέφεραν το γεγονός στις τοπικές αρχές, οι οποίες έδειξαν αδιαφορία.
Σύμφωνα με το Τουρκικό πρακτορείο ειδήσεων ΙΧΑ οι εργάτες πέταξαν τα οστά στο ποτάμι της περιοχής.
Το 1916 μελετημένο Τουρκικό σχέδιο προέβλεπε την άμεση εξόντωση ανδρών ηλικίας απο 16 μέχρι 60 ετών. Η αποστολή εξόντωσης με σφαγές εφαρμόστηκε κυρίως στις περιοχές της Σαμψούντας και της Πάφρας. Σύμφωνα με τον Ιστορικό Κωνσταντίνο Φωτιάδη «τέτοιους ομαδικούς τάφους θα βρούμε κι άλλους, αν η Τουρκία θέλει να αναγνωρίσει τα εγκλήματα που διέπραξε».

Geçen hafta sonu ilçenin Yazılar Köyü İlköğretim Okulu'na istinat duvarı yapmak için çalışma yapan İl Özel İdaresi'ne ait kepçe, toprak alımı yapanken tesadüfen toplu mezarlığı ortaya çıkarmış ve Rumlara ait olduğu ileri sürülen mezarlığa kimsenin sahip çıkmaması nedeniyle mezarlıktan çıkan insan iskeletleri ırmağa atılmıştı.
Mezarlığın tarihi olabileceğinden şüphelenen İl Kültür ve Turizm Müdürlüğü, hemen çalışmalarına başladı. İstinat duvarının yapımını durduran İl Kültür ve Turizm Müdürlüğü yetkilileri, bölgede geniş çaplı araştırma yapmak için arkeolog görevlendirdi.
Köyde inceleme yapan arkeologların, kazı çalışması esnasında çıkan insan iskeletlerini topladığı ve inceleme yapmak üzere müzeye götürdüğü bildirildi.

On the 23rd of March 2008, Turkish media reported the finding of a mass grave containing the human remains of roughly 10 bodies during excavation work on the grounds of a primary school in the village Yazilar which is located 20 km from Tekkeköy, a region in the province of Samsounta (Samsun) in western Pontos (current day Turkey).
According to the reports of the villager, the remains belong to Greeks who primarily lived in the village which up until the Genocide (1916-22).
The residents of the village reported their finding to local officials who showed an indifference to the matter and subsequently proceeded to throw the remains in a nearby river. This Mass Grave of the Greeks of Yazilar, Greeks who in all likelihood did not receive a proper burial along with over 1 million Greeks of Thrace and Asia Minor, perished during one of the first genocides of the 20th century.

Am 23. März 2008 berichteten türkische Medien über die Entdeckung eines Massengrabs, in dem sich die menschlichen Überreste von ungefähr 10 Körpern befinden. Die Entdeckung erfolgte während des Aufbau einer Grundschule auf den Fudamenten einer griechischen Kirche im Dorf Yazilar, das 20 sich Kilometer von Tekkeköy befindet, eine Region in der Provinz von Samsounta (Samsun) in West-Pontos (gegenwärtig in der Türkei).
Entsprechend den Aussagen von Ansässigen, werden die Überreste Pontos-Griechen zugeordnet, die vor dem Völkermord (1916-22) dort hauptsächlich gelebt haben..
Der Fund wurde von den Dorfeinwohnern lokalen Behörden angezeigt, die jedoch zeigten eine Gleichgültigkeit bezüglich der Angelegenheit und so warfen sie die menschlichen Überreste in einem nahe gelegenen Fluss. Diese Pontos-Griechen des Massengrabes von Yazilar gehören zu den über 1 Million Griechen aus Thrakien und Kleinasien, die während des ersten Völkermordes des 20. Jahrhunderts umgebracht wurden.

Ομαδικός τάφος Ποντίων στη Σαμψούντα
Παλιές πληγές ανοίγει ο τυχαίος εντοπισμός ομαδικού τάφου σε χωριό της Σαμψούντας. Τα οστά βρέθηκαν κατά τη διάρκεια εργασιών σε σχολείο του χωριού Γιαζιλάρ (Yazılar), που απέχει 20 χλμ από το Τεκέκιοϊ (Tekkeköy), έδρα της ομώνυμης επαρχίας του νομού Σαμσούντας, στην περιοχή του Δυτικού Πόντου.
Σύμφωνα με τις δηλώσεις των χωρικών, τα οστά ανήκουν σε Έλληνες κατοίκους του χωριού, το οποίο μέχρι τη Γενοκτονία (1916-1922) αμιγώς ελληνικό ήταν.
Οι κάτοικοι του χωριού ανέφεραν το γεγονός στις τοπικές αρχές, οι οποίες έδειξαν αδιαφορία.
Σύμφωνα με το Τουρκικό πρακτορείο ειδήσεων ΙΧΑ οι εργάτες πέταξαν τα οστά στο ποτάμι της περιοχής.
Το 1916 μελετημένο Τουρκικό σχέδιο προέβλεπε την άμεση εξόντωση ανδρών ηλικίας απο 16 μέχρι 60 ετών. Η αποστολή εξόντωσης με σφαγές εφαρμόστηκε κυρίως στις περιοχές της Σαμψούντας και της Πάφρας. Σύμφωνα με τον Ιστορικό Κωνσταντίνο Φωτιάδη «τέτοιους ομαδικούς τάφους θα βρούμε κι άλλους, αν η Τουρκία θέλει να αναγνωρίσει τα εγκλήματα που διέπραξε».

A Turkish Health Ministry official said 4,000 police officers would be deployed at major hospitals for the security of doctors and medical staff after the recent murder in a hospital of a doctor in the Black Sea province of Samsun fueled debates about violence against health officials in Turkey.
Eyüp Gümüş, the Health Ministry undersecretary, said police officers would directly take action against those who commit violent acts to keep hospitals running with no operational halt. The presence of police officers at hospitals would also discourage people with violent intentions to act on their impulses and boost health officials’ morale, he said.
Gümüş elaborated on how police officers will be deployed at hospitals, saying their deployment would be done jointly by the Health Ministry and the Turkish National Police (EGM).
“As a first step, we will make an amendment in order to recruit contractual security personnel in hospitals through the EGM and put private security companies in contact with the EGM. What we want to achieve in the second step is the presence of a total of 4,000 armed police officers in the emergency departments of as many as 300 major hospitals. The contractual security personnel who are currently working at hospitals try to ensure hospital security by calling the police department. They sometimes fall short of capturing a suspect in a violent act because they are not trained enough. These police officers will quickly capture any violent suspect,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the Health Ministry, Gümüş said they have to ensure not only the security of health officials, but also that of patients.
The move came about a month after Kamil Furtun, a thoracic surgeon, was shot dead while on duty at the Samsun Thoracic Diseases and Surgery Hospital May 29 in Samsun.
The killing of Furtun exacerbated the debate on violence against health officials, leading to nationwide strikes by doctors and medical staff for a day, in protest.

May 19, 1919, was the day Mustafa Kemal, later to become Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, arrived in the Black Sea city of Samsun from Istanbul to organize the war that saw the remnants of the Ottoman Empire transformed into modern Turkey four years later.
Today, the day is marked around Turkey as Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day, a national holiday that sees young people stage sporting and cultural activities.
Anitkabir, Ataturk’s mausoleum overlooking capital Ankara, provided the focal point at the start of the day when Sports Minister Akif Cagatay Kilic, who is also a lawmaker for Samsun province, laid a wreath at Ataturk's tomb.
In a memorial message, Kilic wrote: "We are here on behalf of all youths as the strong and decisive defenders of the Republic of Turkey. Together with the young, we always prioritize tranquility and peace while keeping the values of the republic."
In a statement released on Monday evening, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the holiday was “an indication of our trust in them [the youth] and of a great responsibility that they shoulder."
Addressing Turkey’s youth, he added: "You should work more to preserve the republic, to further glorify it and to carry it to the highest level of modern civilization."
On Tuesday, Erdogan is due to receive youngsters at the Presidential Palace in Ankara.

Ünal said the situation was not critical and teams had been working since dawn to rescue the ten people on board.
The efforts to rescue both the crew and the vessel are continuing, added Ünal.

Some 50 former police officers, including former police intelligence unit heads, were detained in a fresh wave of operations held primarily in the Mediterranean province of Mersin and seven other provinces early June 1 over allegations of wiretapping top government officials.
Ertuğrul Şenyiğit, who is a retired Turkish National Police Smuggling and Organized Crimes Unit deputy head, was among the detained. The police are currently searching for 13 others.
The operations have been held in the southern provinces of Mersin and Adana, the western province of Denizli, the capital Ankara, the Black Sea province of Samsun and the eastern provinces of Mardin, Bingöl, Van and Hakkari. The police held an intense search and confiscated several documents from the homes of Şenyiğit and other former police intelligence chiefs.
All detained, which included businessmen, were sent in groups to state hospitals for health check-ups and brought back to police departments for interrogation.
Ali Çengelci and Ali İhsan Kaya, former police intelligence chiefs of Mersin and deputy candidates of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), were not found at their addresses. Searching efforts for these two and 11 others are still in place.
A lawsuit previously filed against 25 police officers, who allegedly wiretapped 123 public officials, including several governors, deputy governors, judges, police officers, politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen, is ongoing. Of the 25 police officers, 16 were already dismissed from their posts.

Some 50 former police officers, including former police intelligence unit heads, were detained in a fresh wave of operations held primarily in the Mediterranean province of Mersin and seven other provinces early June 1 over allegations of wiretapping top government officials.
Ertuğrul Şenyiğit, who is a retired Turkish National Police Smuggling and Organized Crimes Unit deputy head, was among the detained. The police are currently searching for 13 others.
The operations have been held in the southern provinces of Mersin and Adana, the western province of Denizli, the capital Ankara, the Black Sea province of Samsun and the eastern provinces of Mardin, Bingöl, Van and Hakkari. The police held an intense search and confiscated several documents from the homes of Şenyiğit and other former police intelligence chiefs.
All detained, which included businessmen, were sent in groups to state hospitals for health check-ups and brought back to police departments for interrogation.
Ali Çengelci and Ali İhsan Kaya, former police intelligence chiefs of Mersin and deputy candidates of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), were not found at their addresses. Searching efforts for these two and 11 others are still in place.
A lawsuit previously filed against 25 police officers, who allegedly wiretapped 123 public officials, including several governors, deputy governors, judges, police officers, politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen, is ongoing. Of the 25 police officers, 16 were already dismissed from their posts.

Get yourself the Museum Pass (good for many museums in Istanbul AND Cappadocia), and you can ruin-hop all day long. It's vastly underrated, but it's so amazing!
