Mimi Goese (last name rhymes with hazy) is the former vocalist for dream pop band Hugo Largo. She also appeared in the 1996 short film Black Kites, directed by Jo Andres.
Her singing has been acclaimed by the press. Melody Maker said, "Mimi’s voice conjures up a long plummet through white light and space. It’s like a parachutist still in free fall, who seems briefly weightless and adrift in an ocean of air."
Under the name Mimi (no last name) she has released one solo album, Soak, on the Luaka Bop label, with contributions from French record producer Hector Zazou. She also released a cover of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You" as a single. .
Two collaborations with Moby, tracks "Into the Blue" and "When It's Cold I'd Like to Die", appear on Moby's 1995 album Everything Is Wrong. The latter song was heard during the closing credits of The Sopranos episode "Join the Club".)
In 2006, Goese collaborated and performed onstage with the "mutantrumpeter" Ben Neill on a project called XIX. In 2010, the duo collaborated on a musical theater piece titled "Persephone", which was premiered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's 2010 Next Wave Festival. Goese and Neill were commissioned by BAM to create the staged work (co-starring actress Julia Stiles) with multimedia company Ridge Theater. "Persephone" With a book by Tony Award-winning playwright Warren Leight, it grew out of the 19th-century musical themes that Goese and Neill were exploring. An album featuring music from the project, Songs for Persephone, was released by Ramseur Records in August 2011.
Ben Neill (b. Winston-Salem, North Carolina, 1957) is a composer, trumpeter, producer, and inventor of the "mutantrumpet", a hybrid electro-acoustic instrument. His music has been recorded on the Universal/Verve, Astralwerks, Thirsty Ear, Six Degrees, Ramseur, New Tone and Ear-Rational labels. A former student of La Monte Young, Neill spent seven years as the music curator for The Kitchen in New York. He has collaborated with DJ Spooky, David Wojnarowicz. Page Hamilton, Mimi Goese and Nicolas Collins, and performed on albums by David Behrman, John Cale and Rhys Chatham.
Neill invented the "mutantrumpet", which is a trumpet equipped with extra bells and valves, and electrical modifications that allow him to control computer variables with his playing. The first mutantrumpet had three bells, six valves, a trombone slide and an analog processing system. At the STEIM Studios in Amsterdam, he then developed a MIDI-capable mutantrumpet, which contained more switches, knobs and pressure-sensitive pads so as to allow greater control over the sound and visuals of his sound installations. Robert Moog designed its original electronic processing system and David Behrman designed a computer program to facilitate live performance. In 2008, Neill completed a new version of his instrument during another residency at STEIM. In 2014, he returned to Amsterdam to design another updated version of the mutantrumpet.

Daydream Believer- The Song Stylings of Mimi and Nora
Directions: Enlarge to full size, crank the volume up, and watch in a dark room. This is a video I made for the band Mimi. The song "Believer" is from the Luaka-Bop/Warner-Brothers album "Soak". The band was headed by Mimi Goese, who is also well known for her performance art, and her past involvement in the band "Hugo Largo". Go purchase these works that she was involved in, they are truly extraordinary. This piece has screened at Siggraph, ACM1, as well as many museums and galleries around the world. It was created when I was a student at CalArts back in 1999. It was one of my first experiments in creating real-time animation. The animation was done by capturing live performance/animation data in the 3D software program "Softimage". Basically I danced around with the "mouse" to t...
From her haunting sultry and sexy album "Soak"....Mimi wants roses strewn at her feet. One of the few finds I found while watching the original La Femme Nikita from the late 90's.....The one with Peta Wilson. Lyrics...... Hold tight If I had only known it could rain inside... Keel over take a stand trying to keep my head on my shoulders. Over flow under tow trying to keep my head above water. Believe me I'm a fighter til the end look into my eyes. It's all on fire my life needs fire I want roses Strewn at my feet Moving in moving out the current pulls me... Stay buoyant. I tumble doing deep sea cartwheels. Outside it's dark I catch my breath and scream. Scream!! It's all on fire my life needs fire I want roses Strewn at my feet Soundlessly, I fade away. I sail, I float ...
