About Downtown Atlanta
Downtown Atlanta is the heart of the sprawling Metro Atlanta area and home to one of the largest business districts in the Southeast. The downtown area, with its numerous tourist attractions, entertainment centers, restaurants, hotels, and business sectors attracts millions of tourists every year while supporting hundreds of thousands of residents and business professionals on a daily basis.
History
The Downtown Atlanta area traces its roots back to 1826, when railroad surveyors began looking for a route between Milledgeville and Chattanooga. As a result of this survey and railroad construction, a town named Terminus was founded in 1837 in what is now Downtown Atlanta. In 1842, the thirty citizens of Terminus voted to change the town’s name to Marthasville in honor of then Governor Lumpkin’s daughter, Martha. Just five years later, in 1847, the town again changed names and became Atlanta.
The original downtown area had just seven streets: Peachtree Street, Whitehall Street, Marietta Street, Decatur Street, Pryor Street, Loyd Street (now Central Avenue), and Alabama Street.
Business
Downtown Atlanta has grown significantly since those early days, and is now one of the largest business districts in the country with over 22 million square feet of office space. Because of the city’s central location, several of the nation’s top fortune 500 companies, including Coca-Cola and CNN, have their headquarters in Downtown Atlanta. In addition, Downtown Atlanta is home to the largest skyscraper in the U.S. outside of New York and Chicago – the Bank of America Plaza building.
Attractions
Alongside many of the city’s top companies are major attractions and exhibits that draw millions of tourists and visitors to the bustling Downtown Atlanta area every year. From the Coca Cola museum to the Georgia Aquarium and the CNN studio tours, there are numerous popular attractions all within walking distance of one another which makes touring Downtown Atlanta easy and accessible.
Shopping
Downtown Atlanta is located in close proximity to many popular shopping destinations that bring locals and visitors together on a daily basis to experience the best shopping in the city. Some of the popular nearby shopping malls include Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza as well as Atlantic Station.
Hotels
Nearly every well-known hotel chain has a location in Downtown Atlanta. If you are looking for a more unique experience, the downtown area is home to some unique boutique hotels that offer a one-of-a-kind experience to travelers and locals alike.
Sports and Entertainment
Atlanta is home to several of the nation’s top sports teams and venues including the Hawks NBA basketball team, the Braves MLB baseball team, the Thrashers NHL hockey team and the Falcons NFL football team. The Phillips Arena (Thrashers, Hawks), Turner Field (Braves) and the Georgia Dome (Falcons) are not only home field for Atlanta’s sports teams but also double as top entertainment venues for concerts, shows and performances.
Colleges and Universities
Several major college campuses are located in Downtown Atlanta. Georgia Tech and Georgia State reside in the heart of Downtown Atlanta, adding a youthful flair to the area during the school year.
Transportation
Atlanta is home to Hartsfield Jackson International, which is the main hub of Delta Airlines and also the busiest airport in the nation. There are numerous transportation options for travelers looking to get to and from the city, including rental car, taxi, shuttle bus, and MARTA. MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) is Atlanta’s public transportation and runs trains from the airport to several stops in Downtown Atlanta and many places throughout Metro Atlanta at affordable rates. MARTA also runs city busses with routes throughout downtown and metro Atlanta. For those travelers with cars, interstates 75 and 85 intersect Downtown Atlanta and interstate 285 forms a ring around the downtown area.

Had a great vacation in the Atlanta Area during the week of 7/6-7/12/15, and ended up catching some great trains from NS. Spent some time railfanning in the Georgia heat, but it was all worth it. Caught the ECO units upon visiting the bridge over CP Spring, along with some other cool trains. Not much out of the ordinary though. Thanks for watching! Just another addition to my Railfanning Endeavors!!

The Atlanta metropolitan area, officially (as designated by the US Census Bureau) known as the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta Metropolitan Statistical Area and unofficially known as metro Atlanta, is the most populous metro area in the U.S. state of Georgia and the ninth-largest metropolitan statistical area (MSA) in the United States. Atlanta (

Downtown Atlanta is the heart of the sprawling Metro Atlanta area and home to one of the largest business districts in the Southeast. The downtown area, with its numerous tourist attractions, entertainment centers, restaurants, hotels, and business sectors attracts millions of tourists every year while supporting hundreds of thousands of residents and business professionals on a daily basis.
History
The Downtown Atlanta area traces its roots back to 1826, when railroad surveyors began looking for a route between Milledgeville and Chattanooga. As a result of this survey and railroad construction, a town named Terminus was founded in 1837 in what is now Downtown Atlanta. In 1842, the thirty citizens of Terminus voted to change the town’s name to Marthasville in honor of then Governor Lumpkin’s daughter, Martha. Just five years later, in 1847, the town again changed names and became Atlanta.
The original downtown area had just seven streets: Peachtree Street, Whitehall Street, Marietta Street, Decatur Street, Pryor Street, Loyd Street (now Central Avenue), and Alabama Street.
Business
Downtown Atlanta has grown significantly since those early days, and is now one of the largest business districts in the country with over 22 million square feet of office space. Because of the city’s central location, several of the nation’s top fortune 500 companies, including Coca-Cola and CNN, have their headquarters in Downtown Atlanta. In addition, Downtown Atlanta is home to the largest skyscraper in the U.S. outside of New York and Chicago – the Bank of America Plaza building.

Walmart just announced it's expanding its number of online, grocery pick-up locations. If this concept is new to you, let me catch you up.
You know when you're too crunched for time to get to actually do your grocery shopping? Of course, you do. Well, now you can go to your mobile device, find Walmart's website and shop. While you are busy working, a Walmart personal shopper picks out the items from the order and bags them.
You get off work, pull up and they hand deliver your groceries straight to your trunk. Here's how you get in on this.

In 1979 the bodies of two young black boys were found in a rural area southwest of Atlanta, Georgia. During the following three years, Sixty-eight African American children and young adults were murdered in and around Atlanta. Thirty of these victims were linked by common evidence - a series of unique fibers found on their bodies. Eventually sources for these fibers were found in the home of Wayne Williams, a twenty three year old African American. Officials arrested and tried Williams for the murders of two of the victims, and he was convicted and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences. Once convicted, authorities judicially cleared twenty-two additional cases, assigning them to Williams. Though Williams was never tried for these crimes, they are now officially closed and six of the thirty linked cases remain unsolved.
William Scarbrough spent five years exhaustively researching the Atlanta Child Murders, which he first watched on television news broadcasts as a young boy. He traveled to Atlanta, and all around the United States, filming interviews of the individuals actually involved in these tragic events; police officers, FBI, GBI and private investigators, attorneys, authors, reporters, victim's friends and family members, the family of Wayne Williams and even Williams himself.
Scarbrough collected documents and images from the individuals with whom he interacted and purchased era news footage and outtakes Atlanta TV stations. He has the entire Williams family photo archive, along with the documents and letters generated throughout the appeals process. These assets compile Scarbrough's database of information and materials of The Atlanta Child Murders, a database like no other.
Scarbrough has visited and filmed significant locations associated with these murders; the home of Wayne Williams, areas where victims lived, frequented, were last seen and where their bodies were eventually dumped. He even located the actual car in which the prosecution suspect the victims were killed.
Through his efforts, William Scarbrough has become one of the most respected authorities on the Atlanta Child Murders, fully understanding the complexities these cases present, nuances within the evidence as well as other plausible suspects.
On May 6th, 2005, one of the police officers who originally investigated these murders, now Chief of the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office, Chief Lewis Graham, formed a cold case task force to re-open four of the judicially cleared cases. And thus The Atlanta Child Murders are once again making headlines, forcing us to re-examine them, and the guilt of Wayne Williams, twenty-three years after his conviction.

Though Williams was never tried for these crimes, they are now officially closed and six of the thirty linked cases remain unsolved.
William Scarbrough spent five years exhaustively researching the Atlanta Child Murders, which he first watched on television news broadcasts as a young boy. He traveled to Atlanta, and all around the United States, filming interviews of the individuals actually involved in these tragic events; police officers, FBI, GBI and private investigators, attorneys, authors, reporters, victim's friends and family members, the family of Wayne Williams and even Williams himself.
Scarbrough collected documents and images from the individuals with whom he interacted and purchased era news footage and outtakes Atlanta TV stations. He has the entire Williams family photo archive, along with the documents and letters generated throughout the appeals process. These assets compile Scarbrough's database of information and materials of The Atlanta Child Murders, a database like no other.
Scarbrough has visited and filmed significant locations associated with these murders; the home of Wayne Williams, areas where victims lived, frequented, were last seen and where their bodies were eventually dumped. He even located the actual car in which the prosecution suspect the victims were killed.
Through his efforts, William Scarbrough has become one of the most respected authorities on the Atlanta Child Murders, fully understanding the complexities these cases present, nuances within the evidence as well as other plausible suspects.
On May 6th, 2005, one of the police officers who originally investigated these murders, now Chief of the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office, Chief Lewis Graham, formed a cold case task force to re-open four of the judicially cleared cases. And thus The Atlanta Child Murders are once again making headlines, forcing us to re-examine them, and the guilt of Wayne Williams, twenty-three years after his conviction.
