Indonesia Raya

"Indonesia Raya" is the national anthem of Indonesia since the proclamation of independence of the Republic of Indonesia on the 17 August 1945. The song was introduced by its composer, Wage Rudolf Supratman, on 28 October 1928 during the Second Indonesian Youth Congress in Batavia. The song marked the birth of the all-archipelago nationalist movement in Indonesia that supported the idea of one single "Indonesia" as successor to the Dutch East Indies, rather than split into several colonies. The first newspaper to openly publish the musical notation and lyric of "Indonesia Raya" — an act of defiance towards the Dutch authorities — was the Chinese Indonesian weekly Sin Po.

The first stanza of "Indonesia Raya" was chosen as the national anthem when Indonesia proclaimed its independence at 17 August 1945. Jozef Cleber, a Dutch composer, created Indonesia Raya arrangement for philharmonic orchestra in 1950. This arrangement is widely used currently for formal and some informal purposes.

Indonesia Raya (newspaper)

Indonesia Raya was an Indonesian newspaper co-founded in 1949 by Mochtar Lubis. Before its permanent closure in 1974, it was banned numerous times by both the Sukarno and Suharto governments.

History

Indonesia Raya was co-founded in 1949 by Mochtar Lubis. It received irregular funding from military intelligence officers and operated under the opinion that, for the free press, the government was "adversary number one". By 1956 its circulation was 40,000, but after 1957 Indonesia Raya was banned six times.

In October 1958, Indonesia Raya was banned and Mochtar Lubis imprisoned. The daily did not resume publication until 1968, when the New Order government permitted its publication. Former employees and staff were asked to return and continue their work.

Beginning in 1969, Indonesia Raya published many articles regarding corruption in Pertamina. Although some newspapers, including Kompas, supported Indonesia Raya, others claimed that Indonesia Raya had a conflict of interest with Pertamina and accused it of trying blackmail the oil company. Eventually, in August 1970 Indonesia Raya was told to desist their reports or face serious repercussions.

Credit union

A credit union is a member-owned financial cooperative, democratically controlled by its members, and operated for the purpose of promoting thrift, providing credit at competitive rates, and providing other financial services to its members. Many credit unions also provide services intended to support community development or sustainable international development on a local level.

Credit unions differ from banks and other financial institutions in that those who have accounts in the credit union are its members and owners, and they elect their board of directors in a one-person-one-vote system regardless of their amount invested. Credit unions see themselves as different from mainstream banks, with a mission to be "community-oriented" and "serve people, not profit".

Credit Union 1 (Alaska)

Credit Union 1 is a not-for-profit credit union based in Anchorage, Alaska. Its service area spans the entire state, and anyone who lives or works in Alaska is eligible to join. As of December 31, 2014, the credit union had $924M in assets, over 76,000 members, and 14 branches throughout Alaska.

Credit Union 1 is Alaska's second largest financial cooperative and is the only credit union chartered with the State of Alaska. Credit Union 1 is federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), up to $250,000 per account.

History

Credit Union 1 was established as Anchorage Teachers Federal Credit Union in 1952. Its original base of membership was personnel and dependents of the Anchorage Independent School District. The credit union since merged with other Alaskan credit unions such as FedAlaska, Ward Cove, and North Country Credit Union.

The credit union recently opened a branch in the Mountain View neighborhood of Anchorage, which has not had a financial institution for over 20 years. The land for the new branch was purchased from the Anchorage Community Land Trust.
