On Monday, December 15, the Atlantic Council will host the US launch of a new International Monetary Fund report entitled 25 Years of Transition which explores how Eastern Europe's economy has changed and grown since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The event also marks the start of our new EuroGrowth Conversation Series, focused on getting Europe back on the path to sustainable economic growth and job creation through structural reforms and more and better trade across the Atlantic.
The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 changed world history and dramatically transformed Europe. Central and Eastern Europe embarked on a historic transition from communism to capitalism and democracy, and a reintegration into the global economy. Liberalization of trade and price fluctuation came quickly, but institutional reforms in areas like governance, competition policy, labor markets, and privatization of state-owned enterprises—often faced significant opposition from vested interests. Reform momentum has slowed significantly in recent years, with a risk of reversal emerging in some countries. To revitalize economic growth and reduce the risk of Central and Eastern Europe falling back into crisis—a stronger commitment to free market policies is needed.

Designing post-communism:
Recent political imaginaries in Cuban contemporary art
The fall of the Berlin Wall as a symptom of the end of "real state socialism" signaled a permanent interest in eastern visual and material culture. In this sense socialist aesthetics far from disappearing flooded new ways of reimagining and reconstructing the past under the sign of the so called post-communist condition. While archaic forms of the socialist image production emerged as ways of rethinking a past history, contemporary art began reexamining its artistic and linguistic legacies.
The exhibition "Designing Post-Communism: recent political imaginaries in Cuban contemporary art", tries to bear witness to this paradigmatic change in contemporary culture from the singular venue and experience of the Cuban Revolution. The exhibition features four important artists of the contemporary Cuban art scene-- Ezequiel Suarez, Filio Galvez, Hamlet Lavastida, and Rodolfo Peraza. These artists' artistic productions try to come to terms with the socialist experience in an array of representational strategies. Whether exploring the moralizing experience of the "new man" through new-media digital forms such as video games, capturing the ruins of hidden soviet inspired architecture in Havana, or appropriating the design and surfaces of visual propaganda during the first decade of Castroism of the 1960s, these artists appropriate the imaginaries of communism to understand the passing away of utopia as catastrophe.
Curated by Gerardo Munoz, this show tries to articulate the relation between past communist imaginaries and its multiple reconstructions by contemporary artists through two main themes: design and political ideology. Exhibition will be accompanied with texts by Gerardo Munoz, and Ivan de la Nuez.

Post-communism is a name sometimes given to the period of political and economic transformation or "transition" in former Communist states located in parts of Europe and Asia, in which new governments aimed to create free market-oriented capitalist economies with some form of parliamentary democracy.
The policies of most Communist Parties in both Eastern and Western Europe had been governed by the example of the Soviet Union. In most of the countries in Eastern Europe, following the fall of Communist-led governments in 1989, the Communist Party generally split in two factions: a reformist Social Democratic party and a new, less reform-oriented Communist Party. The newly created Social Democratic parties were generally larger and more powerful than the remaining Communist Parties; only in Russia, Moldova, and the Czech Republic did the Communist Party remain a significant force.
The ex-communist social democrats gained increasing popularity when the transition to capitalism began to cause economic problems such as poverty and unemployment. Nearly all of them won national elections in their respective countries at least once in the past 15 years.

On Monday, December 15, the Atlantic Council will host the US launch of a new International Monetary Fund report entitled 25 Years of Transition which explores how Eastern Europe's economy has changed and grown since the fall of the Berlin Wall. The event also marks the start of our new EuroGrowth Conversation Series, focused on getting Europe back on the path to sustainable economic growth and job creation through structural reforms and more and better trade across the Atlantic. The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 changed world history and dramatically transformed Europe. Central and Eastern Europe embarked on a historic transition from communism to capitalism and democracy, and a reintegration into the global economy. In this sense socialist aesthetics far from disappearing flooded new ways of reimagining and reconstructing the past under the sign of the so called post-communist condition. While archaic forms of the socialist image production emerged as ways of rethinking a past history, contemporary art began reexamining its artistic and linguistic legacies. The exhibition "Designing Post-Communism: recent political imaginaries in Cuban contemporary art", tries to bear witness to this paradigmatic change in contemporary culture from the singular venue and experience of the Cuban Revolution. The exhibition features four important artists of the contemporary Cuban art scene-- Ezequiel Suarez, Filio Galvez, Hamlet Lavastida, and Rodolfo Peraza. These artists' artistic productions try to come to terms with the socialist experience in an array of representational strategies. Recent political imaginaries in Cuban contemporary art
The fall of the Berlin Wall as a symptom of the end of "real state socialism" signaled a permanent interest in eastern visual and material culture. In this sense socialist aesthetics far from disappearing flooded new ways of reimagining and reconstructing the past under the sign of the so called post-communist condition. While archaic forms of the socialist image production emerged as ways of rethinking a past history, contemporary art began reexamining its artistic and linguistic legacies.
The exhibition "Designing Post-Communism: recent political imaginaries in Cuban contemporary art", tries to bear witness to this paradigmatic change in contemporary culture from the singular venue and experience of the Cuban Revolution. The exhibition features four important artists of the contemporary Cuban art scene-- Ezequiel Suarez, Filio Galvez, Hamlet Lavastida, and Rodolfo Peraza. These artists' artistic productions try to come to terms with the socialist experience in an array of representational strategies. The remainder of this Toronto, Canada week -- until Friday, December 23, 2011's funeral -- will be a fulsome tribute to the late Czech President Vaclav Havel (Václav Havel): a meandering retrospective about his life, his art, his personal politics, his fervent opposition to the evil Communist Czechoslovak regime, and his good plays and other works.
This is a direct response to a comment I received from a Czech Republic-based Friend. In it, she claimed she couldn't find any foreign (i.e. in English) videoblogs she could share with her Czech friends showing how Westerners cared about the late statesman (http://www.youtube.com/comment?lc=ujErT7U4690h5ngrKOxJwdU0_SFqfn5hhL2lm2jwCZU).
To clear the air and for the record: I care DEEPLY.
Today's discussion centers around the historical connection between Canadians and Czechs (and Slovaks!) especially during the 1970s and '80s, about the help Canadians extended to Czechoslovaks during the worst years of Czechoslovak Communism and its ridiculous "normalization" (normalizace) policy, which I explain the video.
Prominent Czechs, like author Josef Skvorecky (Josef Škvorecký) or politician-entrepreneur Otto Jelinek (Canada's former Minister of Youth and Sport in the Mulroney administration -- and watch that "j" there and no flames please against Jelinek and his reputation in Prague!), men who spent the bulk of their productive career years in this country, coming into their own in the nurturing crucible of Canada's democracy.
On the other side, Paul Wilson, of course, is another one of those very prominent personalities in the Czech-Canadian nexus. He was Havel's "semi-official" translator, and if you're anything like me, you'll have taken in the bulk of your Havel-ian ideas through Wilson's sharp Czech to English translations. Wilson, of course, is all-Canadian and presently resides in Northern Ontario.
On the diplomatic front, sadly, there remain intractable difficulties between Czechs and Canadians with the visa situation.
Without delving too deeply into the politics of the matter, what I can say right now is that there are plenty of Czechs who would like to visit our beautiful natural wonder, but can't, due to the silly visa issue. I have a simple suggestion on how to fix the visa issue, but I'll have to leave it for another videoblog. ;-)
