"Justice John Paul Stevens, who turned 94 on Sunday, is a mild man with an even temperament. He has a reverence for the Supreme Court, on which he served for almost 35 years until his retirement in 2010, and he is fond of his former colleagues.
"But there was a hint of anger in some of his remarks when I went to see him last week in his Supreme Court chambers. He said the court had made a disastrous wrong turn in its recent string of campaign finance rulings.
"'The voter is less important than the man who provides money to the candidate,' he said. 'It's really wrong.'
"He talked about what he called a telling flaw in the opening sentence of last month's big campaign finance ruling. He filled in some new details about the behind-the-scenes maneuvering that led to the Citizens United decision. And he called for a constitutional amendment to address what he said was the grave threat to American democracy caused by the torrent of money in politics."

Justice John Paul Stevens, the longest sitting Justice on the Supreme Court, announced his retirement today. Justice Stevens was appointed in 1975 by President Gerald Ford.
7 Presidencies later and just 11 days before his 90th birthday, the liberal justice announced he will step down, concluding his 35 year term in correlation with the court's summer recess.
President Obama spoke on the news, thanking Justice Stevens for his service and noting he would pick a successor in coming weeks, so as to leave time for the new member to be sworn in prior to the beginning of the highest court's October session.
Now the speculation surrounds who President Obama's pick will be, and how that newcomer will affect the overall dynamic of voting.
Justice Anthony Kennedy pointed out the negative and the positive aspects of new appointments last year when Justice David Souter announced his retirement
This will be a very different court. And it's stressful for us because we so admire our colleagues. We wonder, oh, will it ever be the same? But I have great admiration for the system. The system works. And it gives us the opportunity, again, to look at ourselves to make sure that we're doing it the right way so that the new justice will be able to take some instruction from our example if we are doing it the right way. And I'm sure a new justice can always ask the question, "Well, what are you doing this for?" Then we have to think about whether or not we should continue to do it."

"On the one hand, televising the Court would be good for the Court and for the country because I think people would realize that the justices are very thorough in their preparation for arguments and their understanding of the cases. They ask intelligent questions. People I think are generally favorably impressed when they see the Court at work." He continues, "But the other side of the coin is that television often has unexpected and unintended consequences. You're never 100% sure that might not cause a change in the procedure that would have an adverse effect on it." John Paul Stevens (born April 20, 1920) served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from December 19, 1975 until his retirement on June 29, 2010. At the time of his retirement, he was the oldest member of the Court and the third-longest serving justice in the Court's history. He was nominated by President Gerald Ford to replace the Court's longest-serving justice, William O. Douglas. Stevens is widely considered to have been on the liberal side of the Court. Stevens served with three Chief Justices (Warren E. Burger, William Rehnquist, and John G. Roberts).
Stevens was born on April 20, 1920, in Hyde Park,Chicago, Illinois, to a wealthy family. His paternal grandfather had formed an insurance company and held real estate in Chicago, while his great-uncle owned the Chas A. Stevens department store. His father, Ernest James Stevens, was a lawyer who later became a hotelier, owning two hotels, the La Salle and the Stevens Hotel. He lost ownership of the hotels during the Great Depression and was convicted of embezzlement (the conviction was later overturned). (The Stevens Hotel was subsequently bought by Hilton Hotels and is today the Chicago Hilton and Towers.) His mother, Elizabeth Maude (Street) Stevens, was a high school English teacher. Two of his three older brothers also became lawyers.

Justice John Paul Stevens, the longest sitting Justice on the Supreme Court, announced his retirement today. Justice Stevens was appointed in 1975 by President Gerald Ford. 7 Presidencies later and just 11 days before his 90th birthday, the liberal justice announced he will step down, concluding his 35 year term in correlation with the court's summer recess. Retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens comments on cameras in the Court. "On the one hand, televising the Court would be good for the Court and for the country because I think people would realize that the justices are very thorough in their preparation for arguments and their understanding of the cases. They ask intelligent questions. People I think are generally favorably impressed when they see the Court at work." He continues, "But the other side of the coin is that television often has unexpected and unintended consequences. You're never 100% sure that might not cause a change in the procedure that would have an adverse effect on it." "Justice John Paul Stevens, who turned 94 on Sunday, is a mild man with an even temperament. He has a reverence for the Supreme Court, on which he served for almost 35 years until his retirement in 2010, and he is fond of his former colleagues.
"But there was a hint of anger in some of his remarks when I went to see him last week in his Supreme Court chambers. He said the court had made a disastrous wrong turn in its recent string of campaign finance rulings.
"'The voter is less important than the man who provides money to the candidate,' he said. 'It's really wrong.'
"He talked about what he called a telling flaw in the opening sentence of last month's big campaign finance ruling. He filled in some new details about the behind-the-scenes maneuvering that led to the Citizens United decision. And he called for a constitutional amendment to address what he said was the grave threat to American democracy caused by the torrent of money in politics."
