3 things you MUST DO in Nanjing
Last day of the Miss Su trip we spent in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu and intersection of all cultural influences across the province. One of the major (and newest) Buddhist sites is located here, as well as the longest city wall! As a capital, Nanjing also gathers food customs from all over the province and the choice of Jiangsu dishes is endless. Check out the video for more!

Its exhibits provide a fascinating glimpse into Nanjing's past, making it a must-visit destination for history and art enthusiasts alike.
Now, let's unveil number 3 on our list—Walk along Qinhuai River: Known as "Nanjing's Mother River," it meanders through the city, offering scenic views of traditional architecture and vibrant riverside activities. Visitors can enjoy boat rides, explore charming narrow streets, savor local cuisine, and immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage that surrounds this enchanting river.
Taking the number 2 spot, we have the Visit to the Presidential Palace: This grand complex showcases a blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles and encompasses gardens, courtyards, and exhibition halls. Today, it serves as a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the country's political history and the lives of its former leaders.
Finally, securing the number 1 spot on our list is Confucius Temple Night Market: Located near the historic Confucius Temple, the night market offers a delightful sensory experience. The atrocities committed during World War II, the Nanjing massacre stands out in its scope and brutality, YET most of us have no knowledge….
On Dec. 13, 1937, the Japanese troops captured Nanjing. In the following six weeks, they tortured, raped and slaughtered more than 300,000 Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers AND burned large swaths of the city to the ground. The cruelty inflicted on Nanjing’s citizens over this period defies comprehension leaving deep scars.
This was the darkest and one of the most barbaric episodes of WWII, known as the Nanking Massacre.
Nanjing was home to many Westerners. As the Japanese approached, most fled, but a few stayed behind.
Now rabe is a household name in Nanjing, a business representative of Siemens and a Nazi, risked his life to save local residents who were unable to save themselves
Rabe and a dozen of other foreigners had set up the Nanjing Safety Zone, roughly the size of New York’s Central Park, taking in and saving more than 200,000 Chinese during the heinous massacre by the invading Japanese troops
His actions speak as loud as his words, in addition, he writes a 10-volume diary that recorded the atrocities of the Japanese invaders despite risks
John Rabe has been a household name in Nanjing,
Nanking, then the capital of Nationalist China, was left in ruins… Abandoned as the national capital in 1949 for Beijing, it grew into a modern industrial city during the communist period and today is home to many of China's largest state-owned firms.

TODAY
Today, Nanjing has developed into a major culture, arts and education hub in China
Despite being a metropolis of more than 10 million, life moves at a more leisurely pace in Nanjing than in many Chinese cities; with its compelling contrast of ancient pagodas and sparkling skyscrapers, Nanjing’s feet are proudly planted in both its past and its future.
Nanjing is a megacity of manufacturing, with a strong traditional industrial foundation and booming new industries.
We have worked very hard on this project called |🎥 China's Nanjing City Of Heroes | 中国的英雄城市. Over 80 hours of production time.

China's Nanjing | The Mysterious City at one point in history the largest city in the world, A beautiful MODERN city with an ugly history --- NANJING, China. Once the capital of China this city sparkles at night. Currently being challenged today from the world Pandemic as of writing August 1, 2021

Missionaries: Miner Searle Bates, Lewis Smythe, Minnie Vautrin, Grace Bauer

Nanjing, capital of China’s eastern Jiangsu province, is roughly 300km up the Yangtze River from the city of Shanghai. It was the national capital during part of the Ming dynasty. Many monuments and landmarks remain, including Zhonghua Gate (Gate of China), a preserved 14th-century section of the massive wall that contained the old city’s southern entrance.

Nanjing, abbreviate as Ning, the capital of Jiangsu province in China and the deputy provincial city of Jiangsu province, is the provincial political, economical and cultural center. As one of the four capitals of ancient China, As one of the Four Ancient Capitals, Nanjing is a vital cradle of Chinese civilization and over a long stretch of time, it has been the political and cultural pivot of South China, thus dubbed as the Capital of Ten Ancient Dynasties, rich in both cultural heritage and historical relics. It has produced a great many scientists, intellectuals & poets, and artists.
As the capital of Jiangsu province in China, Nanjing is a city full of vigor and opportunities. It is a window for you to get a glimpse of real China. Touring, studying and living here, you may find it changing and growing every day, you may find it a city with Chinese tradition as the background and full of many modern qualities, and you may feel the hospitality of the people here.
Nanjing is situated in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, at 32°03’N and 118°47’E. It borders with the Yangtze River Delta to the east and the hilly areas of South Anhui to the west, adjacent to the water network of Taihu Lake in the south and the Jianghuai Plain in the north. With the 'golden waterway' Yangtze River flowing through the city, it is 380km from the Yangtze River’s estuary to the sea, and about 300km to Shanghai, the largest city of China (bullet train: about 1.5 hours).
The total area of Nanjing is 6598 square kilometers, including 4728 square kilometers as urban area, and its total population is 8. 2161 million (2014).
Nanjing is in the monsoon climate area of north subtropical zone. The four seasons are distinct here, with damp conditions seen throughout the year, very hot and muggy summers, cold and damp winters, and in between, spring and autumn are of reasonable length. Its annual average temperature is 14℃, and the annual average precipitation 1034 mm.
Nanjing has a prominent place in Chinese history and culture, having been the capital of China on several occasions. Located in the lower Yangtze River drainage basin and Yangtze River Delta economic zone, Nanjing has long been one of China's most important cities. It is the second-largest commercial center in the East China region after Shanghai and has been ranked seventh in the evaluation of “Cities with Strongest Comprehensive Strength” issued by the National Statistics Bureau.
In recent years, Nanjing has been developing its economy, commerce, industry, as well as city construction.
Meanwhile, Nanjing has long been a national center of education, research, transport networks, and tourism. There are more than 30 higher institutes in Nanjing city such as Nanjing University, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Nanjing Medical University etc..

The Tang dynasty maintained a civil service system by recruiting officials through standardized examinations and recommendations to office. The Tang government also gave great reputations to outstanding foreign officals and scholars who work or study in empire and Tang also got lots of respect from other regions.
Because of the mistake of making military policy. the emperors lost control of military and regional warlords rose up. The Tang empire took a heavy toll from the 8-year period of An Lushan Rebellion. This disaster made it impossible to back to prosperity again. In late period, eunuchs took control of whole empire by holding young emperors, and imperial officials and regional warlords fought each other for the power. In 907 A.D, warlord Zhu Quanzhong occupied Chang'an city, the Tang Dynasty was end.
The golden age of Tang dynasty were open, colourful and peaceful. In two censuses of the 7th and 8th centuries, the Tang records estimated the population by number of registered households at about 50 million people. From the Middle East, India, Persia, and Central Asia the Tang were able to acquire new ideas in fashion, new types of ceramics, and improved silver-smithing. To the Middle East, the Islamic world coveted and purchased in bulk Chinese goods such as silks, lacquerwares, and porcelain wares. Songs, dances, and musical instruments from foreign regions became popular in China during the Tang dynasty. Chinese culture flourished and further matured during the Tang era; it is considered the greatest age for Chinese poetry. Two of China's most famous poets, Li Bai and Du Fu, belonged to this age, as did many famous painters such as Han Gan, Zhang Xuan, and Zhou Fang. There was a rich variety of historical literature compiled by scholars, as well as encyclopedias and geographical works. Tang also exerted a powerful cultural influence over neighboring states such as those in Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.
There were many notable innovations during the Tang, including the development of woodblock printing, Chinese medicine and gunpowder.

Nanjing served as the capital of Eastern Wu (229–280), one of the three major states in the Three Kingdoms period; the Eastern Jin and each of the Southern dynasties (Liu Song, Southern Qi, Liang and Chen), which successively ruled southern China from 317–589; the Southern Tang (937–75), one of the Ten Kingdoms; the Ming dynasty when, for the first time, all of China was ruled from the city (1368–1421); and the Republic of China under the nationalist Kuomintang (1927–37, 1946–49) prior to its flight to Taiwan by Chiang Kai-Shek during the Chinese Civil War. The city also served as the seat of the rebel Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (1853–64) and the Japanese puppet regime of Wang Jingwei (1940–45) during the Second World War.
Nanjing has served as the capital city of Jiangsu province since the establishment of the People's Republic of China. It has many important heritage sites, including the Presidential Palace and Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum. Nanjing is famous for human historical landscapes, mountains and waters such as Fuzimiao, Ming Palace, Chaotian Palace, Porcelain Tower, Drum Tower, Stone City, City Wall, Qinhuai River, Xuanwu Lake and Purple Mountain. Key cultural facilities include Nanjing Library, Nanjing Museum and Jiangsu Art Museum.

Nanjing, formerly romanized as Nanking, is the capital of Jiangsu province of the People's Republic of China. With 11 districts, Nanjing, which is located in western Jiangsu, has an administrative area of 6,600 km2 (2,500 sq mi) and a total population of 8,505,500 as of 2019.
Situated in the Yangtze River Delta region, Nanjing has a prominent place in ancient China's history and culture, having served as the capital of various dynasties, kingdoms and republican governments dating from the 3rd century to 1949, and has thus long been a major center of education, research, politics, economy, transport networks and tourism, being the home to one of the world's largest inland ports. The city is also one of the fifteen sub-provincial cities in the People's Republic of China's administrative structure, enjoying jurisdictional and economic autonomy only slightly less than that of a province. Nanjing has been ranked seventh in the evaluation of "Cities with Strongest Comprehensive Strength" issued by the National Statistics Bureau, and second in the evaluation of cities with most sustainable development potential in the Yangtze River Delta. It has also been awarded the title of 2008 Habitat Scroll of Honor of China, Special UN Habitat Scroll of Honor Award and National Civilized City. Nanjing is also considered a Global City with a "Beta" classification, together with Chongqing, Hangzhou and Tianjin according to GaWC, and ranked as one of the world's top 100 cities in the Global Financial Centres Index.

Nanjing means "southern capital" (versus Beijing meaning "northern capital".) It is a renowned historical and cultural city and was the capital of several dynasties over the course of Chinese history.
In ancient China, Nanjing served as the capital of Wu, Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties (Song, Qi, Liang, Chen) for a total of over 500 years.
6000 years' history left Nanjing plenty of historical heritages and made it one of the Four Ancient Capitals of China together with Beijing, Luoyang and Xi'an.
Buddhism began to spread across Nanjing in China long ago and a number of Buddhist temples are well preserved in this historical city.
Nanjing is endowed with rich natural resources and boasts a pleasant climate that enables an abundance of plants to thrive.
Situated in the lower reaches of Yangtze River near Shanghai, Nanjing enjoys a golden waterway with China's longest river flowing through it.
Jiming Temple – a graceful ancient temple
The Jiming temple (temple of cock's crow in Chinese) is a very renowned Buddhist temple in Nanjing, a place of harmony and serenity. It was built along a hillock in the Ming Dynasty in 1387.
The merging of the incense smell together with the calm and relaxing ambient and the bright yellow-orange color create a nice atmosphere.
After making your way up to the top, there is an eight floor Pagoda, with fascinating Buddha statues and breathtaking view over the Xuanwu Lake, Purple Mountain, city wall, city center and the Yangtze River.
Confucius Temple – China town in Nanjing
Built as the site to worship the great Chinese thinker Confucius, the shrine known as Fuzi Miao in Chinese, has been the most bustling local cultural and commercial center since its establishment in 1034. Covering an area of 2.63 hectares with surrounding buildings in good harmony, it enjoys a typical architectural style from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Here we can have a general acknowledge of the fast-growing second-tier city through the following aspects.
Geographic location
Nanjing, as the capital of Jiangsu Province, is a commercial, political and cultural center in east China. Yangtze River, China’s longest river and several of its branches flow through the city.
The 6,600-square-kilometer city is a 90 minute bullet-train ride or 3 hour drive from Shanghai in the northwest.
Getting there
Nanjing is connected to all major domestic cities through three train stations- Nanjing Railway Station, Nanjing South Railway Station and Nanjing West Railway Station and Nanjing Lukou International Airport which is 36 kilometers southeast of the city center and 40 minutes by car.
The airport also hosts a few direct international flights, mostly with nearby Asian cities like Seoul, Singapore and Tokyo.
The city of eight million is a stop on the five-hour high-speed rail route between Beijing and Shanghai.
History
Strategically located along the Yangtze River and at the halfway mark on China’s coastline, Nanjing served as the capital of ten ancient Chinese political regimes for 1,800 years.
Historical relics and sites, many restored, weave the city. Symbolic remains include the Ming Dynasty City Wall, the Presidential Palace of the Republic of China and Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum.
Food
In Nanjing, you can have a taste of excellent local duck. One of them is Nanjing Salted Duck which is said to be the origination of Peking duck.
The local fare is an offshoot of Huaiyang Cuisine, a regional cuisine from southern Jiangsu Province stressing the use of fresh ingredients and fine presentation. Dishes are salty and a bit spicy.
Nanjing foods are mostly safe (no freakish eats like dog meat or insect kebabs), but please beware that local chefs like adding duck guts to soups. The city’s iconic snack, Duck blood and vermicelli soup, contains slices of duck liver and gizzard.
Lifestyle
Life in Nanjing is much slower and more relaxed than in Beijing or Shanghai. It is common to see senior citizens playing chess in the sun or enjoying a radio show next to a busy thoroughfare.
Parks are found all around the city. Most are free and well-maintained. Locals love strolling and picnicking in the green at leisure.
Basic Information of Nanjing City
Located in the southeast of China, southwest of Jiangsu Province, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
Area: 6,597 square kilometers
Population: 8.24 million
Language: Nanjing dialect and Mandarin
Climatic Conditions: subtropical monsoon climate
Airports:

From 1603-1854, Japan was a closed country. No one could leave the country, and foreigners were limited to a small port near Hiroshima. So when the American naval officer Matthew C. Perry forced Japan to open to trade and diplomacy with the outside world, the country was two hundred years behind the rest of the world economically, technologically, and militarily. Over the next forty to fifty years, however, Japan transformed itself from a feudal society governed by an outdated warrior class to a regional power.
In 1896, the Japanese defeated China in the First Sino-Japanese War over influence in Korea. Japan also won the island of Taiwan and several other concessions in Chinese cities, which essentially put the Japanese in control of small parts of China. However, Japan was not alone in this: by 1900, China was a weak, corrupt and divided power, and along with the English, French, Germans, Russians, and Americans, all had areas of China that were, if not under their direct control, were heavily influenced by them.
In 1904-1905, Japan won a stunning victory over the Russian Empire. This war, too, was over influence in Korea, which also bordered Russia. With this victory, Japan gained control of Korea and took over Russian interests in northern China.
In the 1920s and 30s, many internal and external factors led to the Japanese military's increased power over its civilian government. Moreover, by the second half of the 1930s, the Japanese military government had established almost total control over the government, the economy, and Japanese society. Added to that was the idea that the Japanese culture and people were superior to all others, especially to China and the Chinese, with which Japan had a love-hate relationship for centuries.
In 1931, the Japanese army provoked an “incident” in Manchuria, today a part of China, but then a sort of an autonomous territory governed by Chinese military “warlords.” This was what we now call a “false flag” operation which ostensibly gave the Japanese an excuse to invade and take over resource-rich Manchuria.
Population Estimates
As you listen to what we're about to tell you, remember that in 1937, China, outside of the main cities, and even within them to a large degree, was governed by a notoriously corrupt, fractured, and inefficient government, nominally ruled over by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek. Though Chiang's Kuomintang or “Nationalist” government controlled most of the cities in China, especially in the west, much of the rest of the country was ruled either by the communists under Mao Zedong or an assortment of warlords, who ran large parts of the country as their personal empire. We say this because there has been much debate in China, Japan, and the rest of the world about the number of people in Nanking before the Japanese arrived and the number that remained after the atrocities that were about to begin ceased. Census taking in China was almost non-existent then, and many reports about population were wrong because people avoided being counted – that could be used for tax and other purposes. Files that did exist were irregularly kept and updated. Additionally, many people who lived in Nanking before the war fled as the Japanese approached, and others, refugees fleeing the enemy, moved into the city for safety. A large number of Chinese soldiers retreating from the Japanese advance to set up the city's defense also increased the population of Nanking.
Estimates of the population of Nanking before the Japanese arrived range from about 200,000 to a half-million or more.
