Rice University Theatre presented “Eurydice,” Sarah Ruhl’s reimagining of the classic Greek myth about a young girl, Eurydice, who travels into the underworld to reunite with her father.
When Eurydice’s husband, Orpheus, risks his own life to enter the depths of Hades to rescue her, Eurydice must make a choice between following Orpheus back to life or remaining with her father in her new home. “Eurydice” is a love story of sacrifice, the battle between life and death, and a raining elevator, taking place in a hell where the devil rides around on a tricycle, according to Christina Keefe, the show’s director, professor in the practice and director of Rice’s Theatre Program.
The Rice Theatre Program was awarded the Houston Press 2014 Theater Award for Best College Season. Keefe’s recent directing credits include “Bound” for the Houston Grand Opera’s East + West Series and Rice’s productions of a “Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Servant of Two Masters.” She recently acted in the Classical Theatre Company’s production of “Henry V.”
Mark Krouskop, lecturer and production manager for the Rice Theatre Program, who designed the outdoor set for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” the slums for “Little Shop of Horrors” and the Italian village in “Servant of Two Masters,” will be the set designer for “Eurydice.” Krouskop has done set design for the Houston Shakespeare Festival’s productions of “A Comedy of Errors” and “Hamlet.” Heather Breikjern will be the costume designer for this show. Breikjern was recently assistant costume shop manager at the Alley Theatre and has also taught at Santa Fe Opera, Goodspeed Musical Theatre and North Carolina School of the Arts. Her most recent credits include the costume design for Rice’s production of “Much Ado About Nothing.”

The Italian Orfeo ed Euridice was the first of Gluck’s great ‘reform’ operas. In it, he and his librettist Ranieri de’ Calzabigi sought to move away from the complicated plots and ornate music of opera seria, in favour of a ‘noble simplicity’, where music always drives the story. The opera’s premiere at the Vienna Burgtheater on 5 October 1762 was a great success – so much so that Gluck himself revised the opera for the French premiere at the Paris Opéra on 2 August 1774 as Orphée et Eurydice. It is longer, larger and grander; Gluck extended movements, added new ones and revised the orchestration to suit the forces of the Opéra. He also recast the role of Orpheus from alto castrato to the haute-contre of French opera, a very high tenor. The opera remains Gluck’s most popular work, and a landmark in operatic history.
Orphée et Eurydice includes some of Gluck’s most loved music, from Orphée’s tender ‘Objet de mon amour’ and ‘J’ai perdu mon Eurydice’ to the spectacular ‘L’espoir renaît dans mon âme’, added for the French premiere. The chorus also assumes a role of great importance, particularly in their roles as the shades and Furies of the underworld. But the opera is perhaps most celebrated for its innovative dance music; two of its many highlights include the ‘Dance of the Furies’ and the ‘Dance of the Blessed Spirits’. In this new production for The Royal Opera, acclaimed choreographer Hofesh Shechter, who made his debut with The Royal Ballet in the 2014/15 Season, makes his operatic debut in collaboration with Associate Director of Opera John Fulljames (La donna del lago, Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny).

Eurydice (
/jʊˈrɪdɨsiː/; Εὐρυδίκη, Eurudikē) in Greek mythology, was an oak nymph or one of the daughters of Apollo (the god of light). She was the wife of Orpheus, who loved her dearly; on their wedding day, he played joyful songs as his bride danced through the meadow. One day, a satyr saw and pursued Eurydice, who stepped on a venomous snake, dying instantly. Distraught, Orpheus played and sang so mournfully that all the nymphs and gods wept and told him to travel to the Underworld and retrieve her, which he gladly did. After his music softened the hearts of Hades and Persephone, his singing so sweet that even the Erinyes wept, he was allowed to take her back to the world of the living. In another version, Orpheus played his lyre to put Cerberus, the guardian of Hades, to sleep, after which Eurydice was allowed to return with Orpheus to the world of the living. Either way, the condition was attached that he must walk in front of her and not look back until both had reached the upper world. However, soon he began to doubt that she was there and that Hades had deceived him. Just as they reached the portals of Hades and daylight, he turned around to gaze on her face, and Eurydice vanished back into the Underworld. When Orpheus was later killed by the Maenads on Dionysus' orders, his soul ended up in the Underworld where he was reunited with Eurydice.

There is also Roxanne, the Bactrian princess / wannabe dancer, his possessive first wife and True Love. His second marriage to Stateira, Darius' clueless daughter, doesn't set well with Roxanne, which starts the tragic time-clock ticking. Roxanne opts into a regime-changing scenario-- orchestrated back in Athens by Demosthenes and Macedonian rivals.

In it, he and his librettist Ranieri de’ Calzabigi sought to move away from the complicated plots and ornate music of opera seria, in favour of a ‘noble simplicity’, where music always drives the story. This was my Final Project for my Investigative Collaboration class here at UIC. A stage adaptation of Sarah Ruhl's "Eurydice" directed by Luigi Salerni (who was also my teacher for the class). The Rice Theatre Program was awarded the Houston Press 2014 Theater Award for Best College Season. Keefe’s recent directing credits include “Bound” for the Houston Grand Opera’s East + West Series and Rice’s productions of a “Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Servant of Two Masters.” She recently acted in the Classical Theatre Company’s production of “Henry V.”
Mark Krouskop, lecturer and production manager for the Rice Theatre Program, who designed the outdoor set for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” the slums for “Little Shop of Horrors” and the Italian village in “Servant of Two Masters,” will be the set designer for “Eurydice.” Krouskop has done set design for the Houston Shakespeare Festival’s productions of “A Comedy of Errors” and “Hamlet.” Heather Breikjern will be the costume designer for this show. Breikjern was recently assistant costume shop manager at the Alley Theatre and has also taught at Santa Fe Opera, Goodspeed Musical Theatre and North Carolina School of the Arts. Her most recent credits include the costume design for Rice’s production of “Much Ado About Nothing.”

The Italian Orfeo ed Euridice was the first of Gluck’s great ‘reform’ operas. In it, he and his librettist Ranieri de’ Calzabigi sought to move away from the complicated plots and ornate music of opera seria, in favour of a ‘noble simplicity’, where music always drives the story. The opera’s premiere at the Vienna Burgtheater on 5 October 1762 was a great success – so much so that Gluck himself revised the opera for the French premiere at the Paris Opéra on 2 August 1774 as Orphée et Eurydice. It is longer, larger and grander; Gluck extended movements, added new ones and revised the orchestration to suit the forces of the Opéra. He also recast the role of Orpheus from alto castrato to the haute-contre of French opera, a very high tenor. The opera remains Gluck’s most popular work, and a landmark in operatic history.
Orphée et Eurydice includes some of Gluck’s most loved music, from Orphée’s tender ‘Objet de mon amour’ and ‘J’ai perdu mon Eurydice’ to the spectacular ‘L’espoir renaît dans mon âme’, added for the French premiere. The chorus also assumes a role of great importance, particularly in their roles as the shades and Furies of the underworld. But the opera is perhaps most celebrated for its innovative dance music; two of its many highlights include the ‘Dance of the Furies’ and the ‘Dance of the Blessed Spirits’. In this new production for The Royal Opera, acclaimed choreographer Hofesh Shechter, who made his debut with The Royal Ballet in the 2014/15 Season, makes his operatic debut in collaboration with Associate Director of Opera John Fulljames (La donna del lago, Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny).

A stage adaptation of Sarah Ruhl's "Eurydice" directed by Luigi Salerni (who was also my teacher for the class).
I was always fascinated by a deeper look into productions and what happens behind the curtains, what the actors/actresses think of themselves and the characters that they play. I also wanted them to express their gratitude towards Luigi as a gift from teaching each and every one of us here in the Theater Program.
(All footage was shot by me, Trace Hamilton, Ashley Banks, Greg Madden, Neil Fontano, and Kris Basuel)
