Fans of music production know Just Blaze for his numerous accolades and contributions to various genres. However, we bet they didn't know Just can create album-worthy joints on the fly. After listening through three randomly selected records and deciding only one of them was good enough to use, Just began to create a soulful and hard-hitting beat with sped-up choir vocals weaving in and out of the track. In the end, he thought the beat sounded so good he wanted to dip from The Sprite Corner to finish it up at his studio.

http://www.hardknock.tv With SXSW Music Festival right around the corner Hard Knock TV decided to revisit one of the most talked about panels from last year: Behind the Hit: Inside the Mind of a Producer. The panel featured Just Blaze, Drumma Boy, Salaam Remi, Dan Nakamura aka Dan The Automator and was moderated by Hard Knock TV's own Nick Huff Barili. This video clip starts of with Salaam Remi talking about chemistry working with Nas, Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill. Just Blaze adds that a big part of being a producer is understanding human psychology and working with creative people. Just shares a story of the first time he worked with Eminem stating: "Big part of being a producer is understanding human psychology... I almost fucked up one of the biggest projects of my career with Eminem in 2010, when he was doing Recovery. I have long-standing relationships with a lot of the artists I work with -- a lot of times I can say to certain people 'Yo, do that verse over' or 'You're a little off beat' or 'Your second verse is kinda weak' and they don't think anything of it because we have that rapport.
So, on my first day or second day of working with Em on Recovery -- we're doing this one song -- and I just try to say to him like 'Yo, the second verse you sound a little off course a little bit subject matter wise and your third verse -- your flow is a little off.' I just left it at that I didn't think anything of it.
And, he was facing away from me. He turns around and he's like 'I don't hear that, dawg' and I'm like 'I fucked the money up. Damn.' I knew it was over after that, I knew it was over. Then I try to like salvage it and I'm like 'What I mean is, you know, on your second verse you're not really talking about XYZ and in your third verse if you notice the flow kinda diverts in a weird way. I was tryina clean it up but it was a wreck.
So about three hours later I'm sitting in his lounge waiting to probably be sent home and one of his right hand people comes and hands me a phone -- 'Here. It's Marshall.' I'm like 'Hey, what up?' He's like 'Yo, you're a fucking alien. How did you hear that shit?' And I'm like 'Dude, what are you talking about?'
He's like, "After you said what you said, I went home and listened to the song 30 times to try to understand what you were saying and I eventually heard it and I realized where -- (you know) -- that I agree with you. Yo thank you for that because nobody has ever really coached me -- from the second Dre found me I was vocal producing everybody. So nobody's ever really given me negative feedback. So, I appreciate it."
When he hung up, I was like, 'Fine. I didn't fuck the money up.'
But one of the things that one of his managers said to me was 'You know where you messed up: you didn't give him anything positive. All you told him what you didn't like.' And that was that..." You are going to have to watch the video for the full story.

Justin Smith, better known as Just Blaze, is an American hip hop music producer from Paterson, New Jersey. Blaze is also the CEO of Fort Knocks Entertainment. He is most well known for producing Jay-Z songs on the albums The Blueprint, The Blueprint 2, and The Black Album. He is also known for producing a number of songs on Eminem's most recent album Recovery. Blaze also appears in the video for the third single from Recovery entitled "No Love", which he also produced.

Talib Kweli Greene (October 3, 1975), better known as Talib Kweli, is an American rapper. Kweli hails from Brooklyn, New York. His first name in Arabic means "student" or "seeker" (طالب); his middle name in Swahili means "true". Kweli first gained recognition through Black Star, a collaboration with fellow MC Mos Def.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Kweli grew up in a highly educated household in Park Slope. His mother, Brenda Greene, is an English professor at Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York and his father an administrator at Adelphi University. His younger brother, Jamal Greene, is a professor of Constitutional Law at Columbia Law School, and former clerk to Justice John Paul Stevens on the Supreme Court. As a youth, he was drawn to Afrocentric rappers, such as De La Soul and other members of the Native Tongues Posse whom he had met in high school. Talib Kweli was a student at Cheshire Academy, a boarding school in Connecticut. He was also a student at Brooklyn Technical High School, before being academically dismissed. He later studied experimental theater at New York University.

He is one of the most financially successful hip hop artists and entrepreneurs in America, having a net worth of over $450 million as of 2011.He has sold approximately 50 million albums worldwide, while receiving fourteen Grammy Awards for his musical work, and numerous additional nominations. He is consistently ranked as one of the greatest rappers of all-time. He was ranked #1 by MTV in their list of The Greatest MCs of All-Time in 2006. Two of his albums, Reasonable Doubt (1996) and The Blueprint (2001) are considered landmarks in the genre with both of them being ranked in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Jay-Z co-owns the 40/40 Club, is part-owner of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets and is also the creator of the line Rocawear. He is the former CEO of Def Jam Recordings, one of the three founders of Roc-A-Fella Records, and the founder of Roc Nation. As an artist, he holds the record for most number one albums by a solo artist on the Billboard 200 with eleven. Jay-Z also has had four number ones on the Billboard Hot 100, one as lead artist.

http://www.vladtv.com - The story has been around for years: legendary producer Just Blaze let Jay Z listen to the classic "Oh Boy" beat before anyone else, but it ultimately ended up in the hands of Cam'ron who decided to use it as his own track. "It's very simple: I had the beat - made it like three different ways... and I kept toying with different ways to do it," Just Blaze begins as he explains how it all went down. He then goes on to say he played it for Jay Z, who asked that he hold it for him to use in the future. "And Jay would do that all the time, you know, 'hold this for me, hold that for me,' then forget about it. Like all artists do." Cam'ron eventually got a hold of it and sent the unfinished demo to Angie Martinez at Hot 97, and the rest, as we all know, is history. All he had to do "was wait one day," Just Blaze says, as it cost them to lose a significant yet undisclosed amount of publishing money. http://www.vladtv.com - The story has been around for years: legendary producer Just Blaze let Jay Z listen to the classic "Oh Boy" beat before anyone else, but it ultimately ended up in the hands of Cam'ron who decided to use it as his own track. "It's very simple: I had the beat - made it like three different ways... and I kept toying with different ways to do it," Just Blaze begins as he explains how it all went down. The panel featured Just Blaze, Drumma Boy, Salaam Remi, Dan Nakamura aka Dan The Automator and was moderated by Hard Knock TV's own Nick Huff Barili. This video clip starts of with Salaam Remi talking about chemistry working with Nas, Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill. Just Blaze adds that a big part of being a producer is understanding human psychology and working with creative people. Just shares a story of the first time he worked with Eminem stating: "Big part of being a producer is understanding human psychology... I almost fucked up one of the biggest projects of my career with Eminem in 2010, when he was doing Recovery. I have long-standing relationships with a lot of the artists I work with -- a lot of times I can say to certain people 'Yo, do that verse over' or 'You're a little off beat' or 'Your second verse is kinda weak' and they don't think anything of it because we have that rapport.
So, on my first day or second day of working with Em on Recovery -- we're doing this one song -- and I just try to say to him like 'Yo, the second verse you sound a little off course a little bit subject matter wise and your third verse -- your flow is a little off.' I just left it at that I didn't think anything of it.
And, he was facing away from me. He turns around and he's like 'I don't hear that, dawg' and I'm like 'I fucked the money up. Damn.' I knew it was over after that, I knew it was over. Then I try to like salvage it and I'm like 'What I mean is, you know, on your second verse you're not really talking about XYZ and in your third verse if you notice the flow kinda diverts in a weird way. I was tryina clean it up but it was a wreck.
So about three hours later I'm sitting in his lounge waiting to probably be sent home and one of his right hand people comes and hands me a phone -- 'Here. It's Marshall.' I'm like 'Hey, what up?' He's like 'Yo, you're a fucking alien. How did you hear that shit?' And I'm like 'Dude, what are you talking about?'
He's like, "After you said what you said, I went home and listened to the song 30 times to try to understand what you were saying and I eventually heard it and I realized where -- (you know) -- that I agree with you. Yo thank you for that because nobody has ever really coached me -- from the second Dre found me I was vocal producing everybody. So nobody's ever really given me negative feedback. So, I appreciate it."
When he hung up, I was like, 'Fine. I didn't fuck the money up.'
But one of the things that one of his managers said to me was 'You know where you messed up: you didn't give him anything positive. All you told him what you didn't like.' And that was that..." You are going to have to watch the video for the full story.

Cam'ron eventually got a hold of it and sent the unfinished demo to Angie Martinez at Hot 97, and the rest, as we all know, is history. Young Guru tells Just Blaze that one of the biggest things that he had learned from him was to construct the record in his head before he sampled the parts. Guru talks about the making of Jay-Z's Song Cry and that when he first heard the sample Just Blaze was going to use he thought it sounded off but that after Jay-Z laid his verse to the raw beat at night, they came back in the morning and it sounded like a masterpiece after Just Blaze was done building the track. That day Jay called 2-3 producers and told them that they were not on Just Blaze's level.
Just Blaze continues by telling Guru how Jay's Girls, Girls, Girls was originally intended for Ghostface and how Busta Rhymes originally heard You don't Know and he wanted it for himself.

About twelve years ago, Jay-Z began his Blueprint series with Just Blaze and Young Guru among the trusted few by his side. Recently, Just and Gu sat down to talk about their work while making the disc with Blaze admitting that some of the beats Jay selected weren't necessarily made with Jigga in mind.
"The only joint that preexisted was 'Girls, Girls, Girls,' which I had been holding for Ghostface [Killah]. The protools session was called 'Ghostface.' And I remember, when I first started the first version of "U Don't Know," Busta [Rhymes] happened to come by and was like, 'I need this!' I was like, 'Let me get back. I'm not sure what I want to do.' I knew it had the potential to be something explosive."
The pair also discussed the making of "Song Cry," and how much the beat changed from when Jay-Z laid his vocals to when the finished track was revealed.
"You finished the first way and I was like, 'This dude is a genius,'" Young Guru said to Blaze. "I think Jay walked in, he heard the beat and he laid the rhyme that night just immediately. That's how fast we was doing the Blueprint joints. He laid the rhyme that night. And you worked on the record that night. I have never seen...How many chops was on that?" he asked.
"96," Blaze responded.
"It was in one form, a basic form for the emcee to say the rhyme," Young Guru continued. "Then, the long intro and all the different changes came so by the time Jay came back the next day, it completely sounded different. What's on the album is completely different from what he laid the rhyme to."
According to Just Blaze, Jay-Z took that moment to call several unnamed producers who he was "cool with" to tell them, "You're good but Just Blaze is a genius." Blaze says other producers were mad at him at the time for that. Young Guru added that Blaze's other beats for Blueprint were made that weekend.

Just Blaze continues by telling Guru how Jay's Girls, Girls, Girls was originally intended for Ghostface and how Busta Rhymes originally heard You don't Know and he wanted it for himself.

About twelve years ago, Jay-Z began his Blueprint series with Just Blaze and Young Guru among the trusted few by his side. Recently, Just and Gu sat down to talk about their work while making the disc with Blaze admitting that some of the beats Jay selected weren't necessarily made with Jigga in mind.
"The only joint that preexisted was 'Girls, Girls, Girls,' which I had been holding for Ghostface [Killah]. The protools session was called 'Ghostface.' And I remember, when I first started the first version of "U Don't Know," Busta [Rhymes] happened to come by and was like, 'I need this!' I was like, 'Let me get back. I'm not sure what I want to do.' I knew it had the potential to be something explosive."
The pair also discussed the making of "Song Cry," and how much the beat changed from when Jay-Z laid his vocals to when the finished track was revealed.
"You finished the first way and I was like, 'This dude is a genius,'" Young Guru said to Blaze. "I think Jay walked in, he heard the beat and he laid the rhyme that night just immediately. That's how fast we was doing the Blueprint joints. He laid the rhyme that night. And you worked on the record that night. I have never seen...How many chops was on that?" he asked.
"96," Blaze responded.
"It was in one form, a basic form for the emcee to say the rhyme," Young Guru continued. "Then, the long intro and all the different changes came so by the time Jay came back the next day, it completely sounded different. What's on the album is completely different from what he laid the rhyme to."
According to Just Blaze, Jay-Z took that moment to call several unnamed producers who he was "cool with" to tell them, "You're good but Just Blaze is a genius." Blaze says other producers were mad at him at the time for that. Young Guru added that Blaze's other beats for Blueprint were made that weekend.
