A fact checker is the person or organization that checks factual assertions in non-fictional text, either before (ante hoc) or after (post hoc) the text has been published or otherwise disseminated, in both cases to determine the veracity and correctness of the factual statements in the text. Fact checking before dissemination (ante hoc checking) has been a mainstay of serious publishers of non-fiction since the advent of modern journalism, and aims to remove errors and allow text to proceed to dissemination (or to rejection if it fails confirmations or other criteria). Post hoc checking most often is followed by a written report of inaccuracies, sometimes with a visual metric from the checking organization (e.g., Pinocchios from the The Washington Post Fact Checker, or TRUTH-O-METER ratings from PolitiFact). The aim for ante hoc analyzed text is often external publication, as in journalistic endeavors. Studies of post hoc fact checking have made clear that such efforts often result in changes in the behaviour, as speakers and writers become more careful in their statements and of the listeners and readers become more discerning with regard to the factual accuracy of content. As well, the studies have provided an array of nuanced insights relevant to theories of human persuasion.
Donald John Trump, Sr. (born June 14, 1946) is an American businessperson and media personality. He is the chairman and president of The Trump Organization and the founder of Trump Entertainment Resorts. Trump's career, branding efforts, personal life, wealth, and outspoken manner have made him famous throughout the country. Since 2015, he is also a candidate for the Republican nomination for President of the United States in the 2016 election.
Trump is a native of New York City and a son of Fred Trump, who inspired him to enter real estate development. After two years at Fordham University and while studying at Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Trump worked for his father's firm, Elizabeth Trump & Son. Upon graduating in 1968 he joined the company, and in 1971 was given control, renaming the company "The Trump Organization". Since then he has built hotels, golf courses, and other properties, many of which bear his name. He is a major figure in the American business scene and has received prominent media exposure. The NBC reality show The Apprentice bolstered his fame, and his three marriages were extensively reported in tabloids.

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump challenged each other's ideas throughout the final presidential debate Wednesday night, but some of the claims on both sides were off the mark. For the third debate in a row, Trump expressed doubt that Russia was behind recent hacks of Democratic groups -- putting him at odds not just with Clinton, but also with the entire U.S. intelligence community. Nancy Cordes reports.

A discussion on whether it's appropriate for the moderators to fact-check the presidential debates between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. I say yes. As usual, I decided to film my view of the NYC skyline during the talk, for your viewing pleasure.
Over the past few years, I have been attending March Against Monsanto protests in the UK in an attempt to gain an insight into why so many people are against this one company in particular. It became apparent very early on, whilst attending these protests, that the majority of people in attendance were not there to protest against the agriculture company Monsanto, but instead to protest against genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in general. As someone who believes that GMOs have huge potential in helping to alleviate world hunger and improve standards of living on our planet, I was curious to hear what criticisms people had of this broad area of science. I was surprised to find that nearly all of the criticisms consisted of lies, half truths, misconceptions, and flat out ignorance. I de...

While memes and bluster often overwhelm substantive debate, fact-checking has emerged as an important -- and growing -- counterforce. More than 100 fact-checking projects around the world actively hold politicians, public officials and other institutions accountable for what what they say and promise. Other projects debunk hoaxes and dubious claims that infect public debate, often through social media. Many fact-checking efforts are affiliated with media organizations or staffed by people with journalism backgrounds. But other models thrive, too -- including growing communities of non-profit organizations and citizen watchdogs. In this panel, representatives from four top fact-checking ventures will discuss trends, including the ways technology and social media extend their reporting and e...

The rise of political fact-checking has brought important accountability journalism to countries around the world. But you don¹t have to work for a fact-checking site to hold politicians accountable. Any reporter who covers government or the media can use the same techniques to expose exaggerations and falsehoods.
