In this video, the Museum introduces the fascinating story of Elsie Mackay: Besides being an interior designer at her father's shipping line, Elsie was also an actress and pilot – in fact one of the first women in Britain to gain a pilot’s licence. Elsie was determined to be the first woman to fly the Atlantic, so on 13 March 1928, 'Endeavour' took off from RAF Cranwell piloted by Elsie. Not long after, a French steamer reported seeing 'Endeavour' still on course, after which nothing else is known.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced the second wave of recipients to receive the Virtuosos Award presented by UGG®, an honor created to recognize a select group of talent whose noteworthy performances in film have elevated them into the national cinematic dialogue. Cynthia Erivo (Harriet), Beanie Feldstein (Booksmart), Aldis Hodge (Clemency), and George MacKay (1917) will be joining Awkwafina (The Farewell), Taron Egerton (Rocketman), Florence Pugh (Little Women), and Taylor Russell (Waves) in receiving the award on Saturday, January 18th during the 35th Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The tribute will be moderated for the tenth year by Turner Classic Movies host and IMDb special correspondent host Dave Karger.
“Our final four Virtuosos range from comedies to dramas, from the US to the UK, and from lead to supporting roles. But what they all have in common is that they shined in their respective films this year. They’re the perfect additions to our exciting evening in Santa Barbara.” says Dave Karger.
Last year’s recipients of The Virtuosos Award were Yalitza Aparicio, Sam Elliott, Elsie Fisher, Claire Foy, Richard E. Grant, Thomasin McKenzie, John David Washington, and Steven Yeun.
The 35th Santa Barbara International Film Festival will take place January 15th through 25th, 2020.

Elsie Mackay
Elsie Mackay (c. 1893– c. 13 March 1928) was a British actress, interior decorator and pioneering aviator who died attempting to cross the Atlantic Ocean with Walter G. R. Hinchliffe in a single engined Stinson Detroiter. Her name as an actress was Poppy Wyndham.
Biography
She was born in 1893 in Simla, India to James Mackay, 1st Earl of Inchcape of Strathnaver, a British colonial administrator in India who became chairman of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company and Jean Paterson Shanks. Her father was serving as President of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce, as a member of the Legislative Council of the Viceroy of India, and as a member of the Council of the Secretary of State for India.
She was reportedly disinherited by her family after eloping with actor Dennis Wyndham to be married on 23 May 1917. She appeared on the stage and screen as Poppy Wyndham from 1919 through 1921. This marriage was annulled in 1922.

Elsie Mackay (born 1894 in Roebourne, Western Australia, date of death unknown) was an American stage and screen actress in the twenties and thirties.
Private life
In 1920 Mackay became the second wife of actor Lionel Atwill, but they divorced in March 1928, after he had detectives raid an apartment on Manhattan's 68th Street in 1925, where Mackay was found with actor Max Montesole. One source claims that they had a son, John. A second source says that Atwill was survived by his son John in 1946. A third source is somewhat contradictory as Atwill's son John from his first marriage died in World War II.

In this video, the Museum introduces the fascinating story of Elsie Mackay: Besides being an interior designer at her father's shipping line, Elsie was also an actress and pilot – in fact one of the first women in Britain to gain a pilot’s licence. Elsie was determined to be the first woman to fly the Atlantic, so on 13 March 1928, 'Endeavour' took off from RAF Cranwell piloted by Elsie. Not long after, a French steamer reported seeing 'Endeavour' still on course, after which nothing else is known.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced the second wave of recipients to receive the Virtuosos Award presented by UGG®, an honor created to recognize a select group of talent whose noteworthy performances in film have elevated them into the national cinematic dialogue. Cynthia Erivo (Harriet), Beanie Feldstein (Booksmart), Aldis Hodge (Clemency), and George MacKay (1917) will be joining Awkwafina (The Farewell), Taron Egerton (Rocketman), Florence Pugh (Little Women), and Taylor Russell (Waves) in receiving the award on Saturday, January 18th during the 35th Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The tribute will be moderated for the tenth year by Turner Classic Movies host and IMDb special correspondent host Dave Karger.
“Our final four Virtuosos range from comedies to dramas, from the US to the UK, and from lead to supporting roles. But what they all have in common is that they shined in their respective films this year. They’re the perfect additions to our exciting evening in Santa Barbara.” says Dave Karger.
Last year’s recipients of The Virtuosos Award were Yalitza Aparicio, Sam Elliott, Elsie Fisher, Claire Foy, Richard E. Grant, Thomasin McKenzie, John David Washington, and Steven Yeun.
The 35th Santa Barbara International Film Festival will take place January 15th through 25th, 2020.

Elsie Mackay
Elsie Mackay (c. 1893– c. 13 March 1928) was a British actress, interior decorator and pioneering aviator who died attempting to cross the Atlantic Ocean with Walter G. R. Hinchliffe in a single engined Stinson Detroiter. Her name as an actress was Poppy Wyndham.
Biography
She was born in 1893 in Simla, India to James Mackay, 1st Earl of Inchcape of Strathnaver, a British colonial administrator in India who became chairman of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company and Jean Paterson Shanks. Her father was serving as President of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce, as a member of the Legislative Council of the Viceroy of India, and as a member of the Council of the Secretary of State for India.
She was reportedly disinherited by her family after eloping with actor Dennis Wyndham to be married on 23 May 1917. She appeared on the stage and screen as Poppy Wyndham from 1919 through 1921. This marriage was annulled in 1922.
