Taipei has been appointed as the World Design Capital® (WDC) 2016 by ICSID（International Council of Societies of Industrial Design）- only the fifth city to receive the honour to date
following Torino (2008), Seoul (2010), Helsinki (2012) and Cape Town (2014). In fact, since 2012, Taipei has participated in several international design fairs such as Helsinki Design Week, Dutch Design Week, Design Indaba Cape Town, 100% Design London, designEX
Sydney, and Tokyo Designers Week.
「New Craft」entering 2015 Design Days Dubai Taiwanese Design has actually been developing over the last 40 years, designers and artisans from all over Asia are drawn to the country to be inspired. Taiwan has many traditional crafts such as bamboo weaving and wood carving, in recent years Taiwanese designers have been blending these with more contemporary materials and manufacturing processes to create some very unique pieces. Through Taipei’s status as World Design Capital next year, the city aims to seize an opportunity to let the world see how Taipei’s brilliant creative energy can be applied to develop design both at home and internationally.
“New Crafts－Taiwan contemporary craft transformation” is curated by Taiwan Designers’ Web, a Taiwanese creative studio focusing on promoting the country’s design environment and connecting the world with local design and designers
The exhibition “New Crafts－Taiwan contemporary craft transformation” hopes to present an interesting collection of works that encompass Taiwanese traditional craft and contemporary vocabulary. Designer x Artisan, Re-interpretation of traditional craft
Many traditional industries have declined under the impact of industrialisation and globalisation, the collaboration of designers offered an opportunity to regenerate these ancient crafts.

On 29 November 2012, Icsid opened bidding for the World Design Capital 2016 designation with this video that highlights the four previously designated cities: Torino (Italy), Seoul (South Korea), Helsinki (Finland) and Cape Town (South Africa).
The Wold Design Capital initiative is a biennial international appointment conferred to a city for the period of one year, in recognition of its achievements and focus on design as a driving force for economic, social and cultural development. The WDC designation honours a city that has best used design to revitalise and reinvent its urban environment.
Interested cities are invited to submit applications until 30 April 2013, by downloading the application form from the official website at www.worlddesigncapital.com

As part of the events of World Design Capital Taipei 2016, executed by Taiwan Designers' Web,Julia Cassim, professor of Kyoto Design Lab at Kyoto Institute of Technology, was invited to share the concept of inclusive design and 'Challenge Workshop' which she organized and held in over 20 cities in 12 countries with more than 700 designers' participation. Julia Cassim has been working with designers and disabled people through different types of workshops worldwide, demonstrating this innovative mechanism can be generated as a design process –a catalyst to better design for all. Helsinki World Design Capital 2012 Kruunuvuori Light Art
Architectural lighting design firm LDC (Lighting Design Collective S.L.) has been awarded a prize to realize a permanent urban light art piece in Helsinki, Finland - an official project for Helsinki World Design Capital 2012. The art piece will convert a disused oil silo into a wondrous light display and a civic space. Public will gain access to the vast interior of the 35m diameter 16 meter tall steel silo which will be dark red inside. Sunlight will fill the space with dappled shadows creating a spectacular daytime space. At night 1280 white LED´s flicker and sway on the surface of the silo controlled by a bespoke software mimicking swarms of birds in flight -- a reference to silo´s seaside location. At the core of the marketing communication is a movable café with design (tables, chairs, music and spoken service) anybody can remotely control on the web in real-time. 「New Craft」entering 2015 Design Days Dubai Taiwanese Design has actually been developing over the last 40 years, designers and artisans from all over Asia are drawn to the country to be inspired. Taiwan has many traditional crafts such as bamboo weaving and wood carving, in recent years Taiwanese designers have been blending these with more contemporary materials and manufacturing processes to create some very unique pieces. Through Taipei’s status as World Design Capital next year, the city aims to seize an opportunity to let the world see how Taipei’s brilliant creative energy can be applied to develop design both at home and internationally.

As part of the events of World Design Capital Taipei 2016, executed by Taiwan Designers' Web,Julia Cassim, professor of Kyoto Design Lab at Kyoto Institute of Technology, was invited to share the concept of inclusive design and 'Challenge Workshop' which she organized and held in over 20 cities in 12 countries with more than 700 designers' participation.
Julia Cassim has been working with designers and disabled people through different types of workshops worldwide, demonstrating this innovative mechanism can be generated as a design process –a catalyst to better design for all. This workshop was collaborated with Children Are Us Foundation and Victory Glass Studio, 5 product and graphic designers were also invited to work with other participants in this 2-day workshop, co-created new visuals and products for the two organizations.

Architectural lighting design firm LDC (Lighting Design Collective S.L.) has been awarded a prize to realize a permanent urban light art piece in Helsinki, Finland - an official project for Helsinki World Design Capital 2012.
The art piece will convert a disused oil silo into a wondrous light display and a civic space. Public will gain access to the vast interior of the 35m diameter 16 meter tall steel silo which will be dark red inside. Sunlight will fill the space with dappled shadows creating a spectacular daytime space.
At night 1280 white LED´s flicker and sway on the surface of the silo controlled by a bespoke software mimicking swarms of birds in flight -- a reference to silo´s seaside location. The prevailing winds, well known to those living in Helsinki, are used to trigger different light patterns in real time.
'The enduring fascination of the complex movement of light and the amazing location by the sea will make this a captivating experience for the visitors and the residents of Helsinki' Tapio Rosenius the Director of LDC say.
The win crowns a buoyant year for the Madrid and London based LDC following major design commissions in Asia, Europe and Africa.

Helsingin Kaupunkisuunnitteluviraston järjestämän kansainvälisen suunnittelukilpailun voittajaksi on valittu Lighting Design Collective (LDC) Madridista. Firma on maailmanlaajuisesti toimiva suomalaisomisteinen valaistussuunnittelutoimisto. Pääsuunnittelija on Oulusta lähtöisin oleva Tapio Rosenius.
Roseniuksen työryhmän valaistus muuntaa teräksisen öljysäiliön näyttäväksi ympäristötaideteokseksi. Teos tulee ensimmäiseksi osaksi Helsingin Laajasalon entisen öljysataman alueelle rakennettavaa Kruunuvuoren kaupunginosaa. Merellinen noin 11 000 asukkaan asuinalue rakennetaan 2010 ja -20 luvuilla.
"Kaukaa siilo on lyhty jonka sisällä valo elää. Läheltä se on abstrakti, kuvioitu ja futuristinen. Sisältä maaginen, yllättävä ääni- ja valokollaasi"- kommentoi Rosenius taideteoksen lähtökohtia.
Siilosta tulee julkinen tila jota voidaan käyttää erilaisiin tarkoituksiin. Iltaisin 1250 valkoista LED valoa luo siilon pinnalle lintuparvien lentoratoihin perustuvan muuttuvan valokuvion. "Valon liikkeen muodostavat manipuloidut matemaattiset kaavat. Luonnonkasvua ja liikettä mallintavat logiritmit sekä parviälyyn perustuvat monimuotoiset liikkeet jotka eivät toistu." -- selittää Rosenius.
Valon liikkeen laukaisevat siilon ympäristön luonnonvoimat. Ohjausjärjestelmä monitoroi tuulen nopeutta ja lämpötilan vaihteluja. "Toiveena on että teos yllättäisi vielä vuosienkin jälkeen" -- Rosenius perustelee interaktiivisuutta.
Säiliö sijaitsee Kruunuvuorenselän itärannalla vastapäätä Helsingin kantakaupunkia. Taideteos näkyy laajalle alueelle Helsingin niemelle, ympäröiville saarille sekä merelle. Valotaideteos on tarkoitus julkistaa syksyllä 2012, jolloin Helsinki on kansainvälisen huomion kohteena viettäessään Word Design Capital - vuotta.

One of the plans going forward is to engage its residents in discussion on the betterment of the city. The future of the capital lies in its ability to evolve, to adapt, to set the wheels in motion. Hence the design for the Taipei City logo is a reflection on a capital whose vision of its future is still taking shape. The logo takes the form of an imperfect circle, a derivative of the WDC logo, with design elements in the state of reaching the final form. Three themed logos addressing on the ways the city can go forward are titled “Engaging the Community ”, “Connecting Information” and “A City Reborn”. An adaptive city, sets its designs in motion.

In 2012, Helsinki will be the World Design Capital together with Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen, and Lahti. The theme of the design capital year is 'Open Helsinki -- Embedding Design in Life'.
The World Design Capital year is an opportunity for building a better city through design. Everyone can participate: the city, its inhabitants, companies, associations, and schools.
Cities belong to their inhabitants. As a design capital, we provide ways of improving our everyday surroundings and developing our cities. In an open city, the people listen to the city and the city listens to its people.
World Design Capital meeting place in Lahti is the Muotohuoltamo Centre.
Lahti Muotohuoltamo Centre is a venue for local, Finnish and international design. This is a place where everybody can acquaint themselves with the activities of the WDC Helsinki 2012.
Located at Vesijärvenkatu 7, Lahti Muotohuoltamo Centre is open from 2 pm to 6 pm Tuesdays to Fridays, and from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturdays.

Though Helsinki can seem a younger sibling to other Scandinavian capitals, it’s the one that went to art school, scorns pop music and works in a cutting-edge studio. The design scene here is legendary, whether you're browsing showroom brands or taking the backstreet hipster trail. The city's gourmet side is also flourishing, with new gastro eateries offering locally sourced tasting menus popping up at dizzying speed.

Kyung-won Chung is the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s chief design officer and the deputy mayor of South Korea’s capital city. In 2010, the former industrial design professor oversaw Seoul’s status as the World Design Capital. During State of Design 2011, he joined panellists Soumitri Varadarajan, Michele Azzopardi, Robert Nelson and Alex Lawler via Skype to discuss his unique role in one of the world’s most affluent, technologically advanced nations. TED TALK legend Dr Ernesto Sirolli returns to Stellenbosch University in South Africa, where he first started developing his Enterprise Facilitation model on economic growth through local entrepreneurship and social enterprise in 1978.
More than 300 communities around the world have benefited from Sirolli's person-centred and passion-inspired approach to local economic development, and his TED TALK has been downloaded nearly 2 million times.
"My passion is becoming the servant of other people's passion," Sirolli said in Stellenbosch on 24 April 2014.
"The new economy is about passion. "Shut up long enough and listen and you will make friends and they will tell you their dreams. The expert is not authorised to help if people don't want your help. Listen to their dreams and help them improve their lives."
Sirolli also said, "We now have a generation of 20-30 year olds who are extraordinary. The post-postmodern generation understands that we do need mastery, combined with humanism. Millennials want to learn how to do things well and beautifully."
Opening the event, World Design Capital (WDC) 2014 CEO Alayne Reesberg said one of the themes of the initiative is bridging historical divides in the greater Cape Town region -- including Stellenbosch -- and building social and economic inclusion.
Stellenbosch University Rector and Vice-Chancellor Prof Russel Botman, who is also Board Chairperson of WDC 2014, said: "Design is not about beautiful things, in the first instance. It is about transforming lives."
He added, "Stellenbosch University is not an ivory tower, but an engaged institution seeking positive impact on society. Through our HOPE Project, we are putting academic excellence in service of society."

He notes the specific challenges of dealing with “invisible and intangible” realms of design as opposed to the comparatively straightforward problems of measuring user problems and interactions with hardware.
Chung discusses innovations in design education in his homeland, and responds to Nelson’s enquiry about the differences in style between Eastern and Western design approaches (Chung studied abroad in his earlier years). He probes the idea of fostering a collaborative, collegial “design culture” in South Korea, rather than a more territorial, competitive nationalist approach, bringing his social agenda to the fore once again.
In part two, the panel swells to include Geoffrey London and Carolyn Barnes. Barnes facilitates the discussion between her four fellow panellists and the audience, unravelling various threads of the earlier discussion.

Anne Marie Boutin is the president of the French design promotion agency, APCI, which she founded in 1983. Originally established under the auspices of the two ministries in charge of Culture and industry, APCI became financially independant in 1993.
The agency aims to further the cause of design throughout France towards companies, public organisations, consultancy firms and general public and to promote french design abroad.
She is also currently:
• ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design) regional advisor since 2001 and was member of the ICSID board from 1985 to 1992.
• member of the advisory board of Strate college designers and consultant for The International college of design (Toulon, France).
