In 1991, producer/director J.R. Bookwalter (THE DEAD NEXT DOOR) took his first leap into non-traditional filmmaking with the video-lensed KINGDOM OF THE VAMPIRE, a moody drama inspired by the '60s soap opera DARK SHADOWS he grew up watching as a kid. The gloomy tale of a young man and his overbearing vampire mother was certainly far from a financial or critical smash, but it helped pave the way for more successful chapters in the director's career such as OZONE (1994) and inspired a new generation of moviemakers to pick up camcorders and do it themselves. More than 15 years later, one of those moviemakers - Canadian actor/director Brett Kelly (MY DEAD GIRLFRIEND) - brings a fresh take on KINGDOM, improving on the original with an even more atmospheric and thrilling adaptation. The early levels of this escalation aren’t too complicated, even with the vampire magician disguises requirement. The addition of a ‘no pacifications’ rule really throws a spanner into the works, however, and the final level, which adds security cameras and asks you to delete the footage within two minutes if one spots you, is just plain mean.
Still, we are all for the ‘escape excitingly in a speedboat’ stipulation. That one can stay.

As a terrible fear of vampires swept central Europe at that time the people of the small village went into hysterics and committed a horrible crime. 250 years later a team of archeologists finds a skeleton of a woman buried in Czech Krumlov according to vampire rituals at: the head of the skeleton had been separated and laid between the bones of the legs, the thorax run through with a wooden implement. This documentary traces the origins of all the vampire myths by uncovering a gruesome murder.

Vampires are mythological or folkloric beings who subsist by feeding on the life essence (generally in the form of blood) of living creatures, regardless of whether they are undead or a living person/being. Although vampiric entities have been recorded in many cultures, and may go back to "prehistoric times", the term vampire was not popularized until the early 18th century, after an influx of vampire superstition into Western Europe from areas where vampire legends were frequent, such as the Balkans and Eastern Europe, although local variants were also known by different names, such as vrykolakas in Greece and strigoi in Romania. This increased level of vampire superstition in Europe led to mass hysteria and in some cases resulted in corpses actually being staked and people being accused of vampirism.
While even folkloric vampires of the Balkans and Eastern Europe had a wide range of appearance ranging from nearly human to bloated rotting corpses, it was interpretation of the vampire by the Christian Church and the success of vampire literature, namely John Polidori's 1819 novella The Vampyre that established the archetype of charismatic and sophisticated vampire; it is arguably the most influential vampire work of the early 19th century, inspiring such works as Varney the Vampire and eventually Dracula.The Vampyre was itself based on Lord Byron's unfinished story "Fragment of a Novel", also known as "The Burial: A Fragment", published in 1819.

In 1991, producer/director J.R. Bookwalter (THE DEAD NEXT DOOR) took his first leap into non-traditional filmmaking with the video-lensed KINGDOM OF THE VAMPIRE, a moody drama inspired by the '60s soap opera DARK SHADOWS he grew up watching as a kid. The gloomy tale of a young man and his overbearing vampire mother was certainly far from a financial or critical smash, but it helped pave the way for more successful chapters in the director's career such as OZONE (1994) and inspired a new generation of moviemakers to pick up camcorders and do it themselves. More than 15 years later, one of those moviemakers - Canadian actor/director Brett Kelly (MY DEAD GIRLFRIEND) - brings a fresh take on KINGDOM, improving on the original with an even more atmospheric and thrilling adaptation. Jeff works the night shift, then comes home to his domineering mother, who has the grisly habit of slaughtering neighborhood children to satisfy her insatiable bloodlust. The early levels of this escalation aren’t too complicated, even with the vampire magician disguises requirement. The addition of a ‘no pacifications’ rule really throws a spanner into the works, however, and the final level, which adds security cameras and asks you to delete the footage within two minutes if one spots you, is just plain mean.
Still, we are all for the ‘escape excitingly in a speedboat’ stipulation. That one can stay.
