Avraham "Avi" Yehezkel (Hebrew: אברהם "אבי" יחזקאל‎, born 10 June 1958) is a former Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for the Labor Party between 1992 and 2003, and again briefly in 2006.

Biography[link]

Born in Tel Aviv, Yehezkel gained a BA in economics at Tel Aviv University and an MA in law from Bar-Ilan University.^[1] He was first elected to the Knesset in 1992 and chaired the Knesset's Sports Committee. He was re-elected in 1996, after which he chaired the Economic Affairs Committee. After being placed 21st on the One Israel list (an alliance of Labor, Meimad and Gesher), he was re-elected for a second time in 1999. During his third term as an MK, he chaired the Public Petitions Committee and the Joint Committee for the Defense Budget. In March 2001 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Transport, but left the government along with the rest of the party in November 2002.

For the 2003 elections he was placed 24th on the party's list (a seat reserved for people from the center of the country),^[2][3] and lost his seat when they won only 19 seats. Although he re-entered the Knesset on 17 January 2006 as a replacement for Dalia Itzik (who left the party and resigned her seat in order to join Kadima), on 28 January Yehezkel resigned his seat and was replaced by Dani Koren.

Yehezkel Braun (Hebrew: יחזקאל בראון‎, born January 18, 1922) is a German-born Israeli composer.

Biography[link]

From the age of two, Braun was brought up in Mandate Palestine in close contact with Jewish and East-Mediterranean traditional music. The influence of this background is clearly evident in his compositions.

Braun is a graduate of the Israel Academy of Music and holds a Master's degree in Classical Studies from Tel Aviv University.

In 1975, Braun studied Gregorian chant with Dom Jean Claire at the Benedictine monastery of Solesmes in France. His main academic interests are traditional Jewish melodies and Gregorian chants. He lectured on these and other subjects at universities and congresses in England, France, the United States and Germany. Yehezkel Braun is Professor Emeritus at Tel Aviv University.

Avraham "Avi" Cohen (Hebrew: אבי כהן‎; 14 November 1956 – 29 December 2010^[2]) was an Israeli footballer who played as a defender. He was best known for his spell playing for Liverpool in England.^[1] After retirement from active football and management, he was the chairman of the Israel Professional Footballers Association for over five years until he was killed in a motorcycle crash.^[4][5], after his death Maccabi Tel Aviv has retired the number 5 that he wore.

Cohen began his playing career with Maccabi Tel Aviv, before joining Liverpool for a fee of £200,000 ($450,000) in July 1979, and became the first Israeli to play in England.^[1][4] He struggled to establish himself as a regular at Anfield and was released in November 1981, rejoining Maccabi.^[1] On 20 September 1980, Cohen stirred up controversy when he decided to play in Liverpool's away fixture versus Southampton, which fell on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. Liverpool drew with Southampton 2–2 in front of 24,085 spectators and Cohen was lambasted by the Israeli media for playing.^[6] He returned to the United Kingdom in 1987, when he had a brief spell under former Liverpool teammate Graeme Souness at Rangers,^[1] before ending his career with Maccabi Netanya.

He also played for the Israeli national team, making his debut on 19 July 1976 during the 1976 Summer Olympics in a 0–0 draw against Guatemala.^[7][8] On 9 October 1984, Cohen scored his first goal against Greece in a 2–2 friendly draw.^[9] He was capped 51 times, scoring 3 goals.^[3][10] His son, Tamir, is also a professional footballer who plays for Maccabi Haifa in the Israeli Premier League and the Israeli national team.^[11]

Personal life[link]

Cohen was married to Dorit and the father of three, including the football player Tamir Cohen.^[12] In addition, Cohen was the brother-in-law of former football player Vicky Peretz and the uncle of Peretz sons – Adi and Omer Peretz.^[13]

In 2008, he participated in the Israeli reality version of Dancing with the Stars and was the fifth to be eliminated.

Death[link]

On 20 December 2010, Cohen was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash. He was taken to Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital, where he was immediately taken into surgery and was reported to be in a critical condition.^[14] Johan Elmander paid tribute to Avi Cohen through a goal celebration on 26 December 2010 when he scored against West Bromwich Albion. Elmander held up a Bolton Wanderers shirt that read on the back – Get Well Soon Avi Cohen. This was due to Cohen's son Tamir currently playing for Bolton.^[15]

On 28 December 2010, Ichilov Hospital declared that Cohen was brain dead.^[16] His brain death was confirmed by his son Tamir later the same day.^[5] Paying tribute to Cohen, Kenny Dalglish said "Avi was a lovely man who will be remembered fondly by everyone at Liverpool who knew him. He quickly integrated himself into the football club when he joined us and spent a lot of time learning English which really made him popular. He was well liked by all the lads and although he didn't spend a long time at the club, he certainly left his mark and no-one will forget how he helped us win the league against Aston Villa. My thoughts and those of everyone connected to the club are with Avi's family." Ally McCoist said "we knew his situation was bad but never for a second did we think it would come to this" before going on to say it was "so sad to hear that he has passed away."^[17]

On 28 December 2010, Cohen's heart stopped and he was declared legally dead at 11:00 p.m. IST.

Liverpool marked the death of Cohen with a period of applause before their Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on 29 December 2010.^[18]

On 24 April 2011, his son Tamir, of the Bolton Wanderers, paid a tribute to his late father after scoring the winner against Arsenal and celebrating with a printed T-shirt with his father's face on it.^[19]

Mohammed Abdel Wahab (Arabic: محمد عبد الوهاب‎), also transliterated Mohammed Abd el-Wahaab (March 13, 1907 – May 4, 1991)^[1] was a prominent 20th-century Arab Egyptian singer and composer. He composed the "Ya Beladi" (also known as "Libya, Libya, Libya") the National anthem of Libya used by the Kingdom of Libya from 1951 to 1969 and again by the post-Gaddafi transitional government in 2011.^[2] He also composed the national anthem of Tunisia, "Humat al-Hima."

Born in Bab El-Shaariyah area of Cairo, Egypt (where his statue stands), Abdel Wahab played oud before the Prince of Poets, Ahmed Shawqi. Abdel Wahab acted in several movies. Mohammed Abdel Wahab was a very close friend to loved singer Abdel Halim Hafez.

Despite the fact that Abdel Wahab composed many songs and musical pieces of classical Arab music, he was always criticized for his orientation to Western music. In fact, he introduced Western rhythms to Arab songs in a way appropriate to the known forms of Arab songs. For example, in 1941, he introduced a waltz rhythm in his song "Al Gondol," and, in 1957, he introduced a rock and roll rhythm in Abdel Halim Hafez's song "Ya Albi Ya Khali".

Abdel Wahab played oud before the Prince of Poets, Ahmed Shawqi, and acted in several movies. He composed ten songs for Umm Kulthum (أم كلثوم). He was the first Egyptian singer to move from silent-era acting to singing.^[3] He was interviewed in one of the most famous program named "ALNAHR ALKHALED" the immortal river. This show was a great success briefing his great biography from him personally.

Legacy[link]

His personal belongings were put in his museum in the Music institute in Cairo. A statue was erected in Bab El-Sheriya square (where he grew up) to keep his memory. As a memorial and honor for him, Omar Khayrat, an Egyptian composer, rearranged some of Abdel Wahab's music and released them on an album called Wahabiat. He died of heart failure.
