Yeddyurappa Adopts
Royal Bengal Tiger of
Mysore Zoo............!

Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has adopted a Royal Bengal Tiger of the
Mysore zoo under its animal adoption programme to give a fillip to wildlife conservation efforts.
The period of adoption is from
October 10, 2008 to October 9, 2009. Mr. Yeddyurappa contributed Rs. 90,
000 towards the adoption fee, which is the annual cost incurred by the zoo authorities in maintaining a tiger.
This is for the first time that a tiger has been adopted ever since the adoption programme was launched by the Mysore zoo in the year 2001-02.
The Executive Director of
Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, Vijayranjan Singh, said: "The zoo appreciates the Chief Minister's interest and concern in the welfare of wildlife. It is a great inspiration for others to contribute towards this novel scheme and to join hands in our conservation efforts."
Those who wish to adopt an animal have to pay an annual sum which is the amount spent on maintaining the animal.
In return, the individuals get a certificate, and a plaque is placed in front of the cage mentioning the individual who has adopted the animal. The individual who adopts an animal also gains free entry to the zoo and complimentary passes, apart from an opportunity to access zoo resources like the library.
The adoption fee depends on the animal species and comes in the range of Rs
. 500 and Rs. 1, 59,570 a year.
Former
Minister D.K. Shivakumar paid Rs
. 50,000 and adopted two
King Cobras for "lifetime".
Among the institutions, the
Bank of Maharashtra has been adopting a chimpanzee by remitting Rs. 65,000 a year, for the last four years. An
NRI had adopted an elephant for three months. The annual adoption fee of an elephant is Rs. 1.5 lakh.
