Detroit Zoological Society Executive Director Ron Kagan will share a view of the future that includes a different relationship between human and non-human animals. Zoos will demonstrate a fundamental commitment to being "patient-centered” – ensuring a great quality of life for every single animal in a zoo. Not just aspirations and words but reality. He will explain the challenging responsibility involved with keeping living beings "captive" and the need to deliver on a decades-long promise to make captivity similar to (and possibly better than) the wild.
Ron Kagan is the Executive Director and CEO of the Detroit Zoological Society. An advocate and activist for compassionate conservation and animal welfare, Ron is a leader in environmental and humane education. Over the past thirty years, Ron’s career background includes working and consulting for numerous zoos and aquaria. Ron has authored several papers in scientific journals, encyclopedic entries, and book chapters on both museum and zoological subjects.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Vaccination and desexing of animals such as dogs are a common practice and considered completely routine in Australia. However, in developing communities where access to basic resources, funding and Veterinarian training are limited, animal welfare can prove to be a challenge. Charmaine shares the mental and physical struggles of addressing these challenges.
Charmaine has been highly engaged with the veterinary community since her graduation from the University of Melbourne in 2004. Her qualifications include the Bachelor of Veterinary Science with first-class honours, Bachelor of Animal Science in pain pharmacology research, ANZCVS Membership in Veterinary Pharmacology and Bachelor of Business Studies in management.
Charmaine is President of Vets Beyond Borders (VBB). She is also on the Australia and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists’ Chapter of Veterinary Pharmacology, and is on the committee of the Australian Veterinary Association’s Australian Vets in Industry special interest group.

provide high standards of animal welfare.

Animal welfare is the physical and psychological well-being of animals. It is measured by indicators including behavior, physiology, longevity, and reproduction.
The term animal welfare can also mean human concern for animal welfare or a position in a debate on animal ethics and animal rights. This position is measured by attitudes to different types of animal uses.
Systematic concern for animal welfare can be based on awareness that non-human animals are sentient and that consideration should be given to their well-being, especially when they are used by humans. These concerns can include how animals are killed for food, how they are used for scientific research, how they are kept as pets, and how human activities affect the survival of endangered species.
An ancient object of concern in some civilizations, animal welfare began to take a larger place in Western public policy in 19th-century Britain. Today it is a significant focus of interest or activity in veterinary science, in ethics, and in animal welfare organizations.

However, in developing communities where access to basic resources, funding and Veterinarian training are limited, animal welfare can prove to be a challenge. Charmaine shares the mental and physical struggles of addressing these challenges.
Charmaine has been highly engaged with the veterinary community since her graduation from the University of Melbourne in 2004. Her qualifications include the Bachelor of Veterinary Science with first-class honours, Bachelor of Animal Science in pain pharmacology research, ANZCVS Membership in Veterinary Pharmacology and Bachelor of Business Studies in management.
Charmaine is President of Vets Beyond Borders (VBB). She is also on the Australia and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists’ Chapter of Veterinary Pharmacology, and is on the committee of the Australian Veterinary Association’s Australian Vets in Industry special interest group.

One ran away. These animals can do serious car damage and are very common in Belgium (martre), Netherlands (steenmarter), Germany (marder) and France. -

The film brings you the whole picture of how animals experience living in a stressful and unnatural environment, and how it effects their mental and natural life.
Ensuring a good welfare for animals housed in zoos, is not an easy job. It might not even be something we will ever really get a perfect grip on. Animal species have evolved over many years and their physical, physiological, social and behavioral traits have been developed in order for them to survive as best as they can in their natural environment.
In captivity, animals may face a number of challenges which evolution has not prepared them for and disables the animal to fulfill their behavioral needs. The absence of these, climate, diet, the size and characteristics of their enclosure or the fact that they have to rely on humans for their every need can cause an animal to feel stressed in which it starts to perform a stereotypic behavior. Repetitive, abnormal behavior is often regarded as an indicator of poor welfare and is studied as a coping mechanism, and measures of stress which can potentially go on to cause brain dysfunction. I believe, that the display of abnormal behavior patterns are not recognized enough by the public eye. That is why I have decided to make this documentary to educate you about what lies behind these stereotypic behaviors which we can easily identify, but might not have given a further thought about, or brought a negative judgement upon when visiting the zoo. The study of stereotypic behavior is complicated with many important factors that determines the health of a captive animal. 'Zoochosis' will bring you the whole picture of how animals experience living in a stressful and unnatural environment, and how it effects their mental and natural life.
