Description: As the most influential goddess of the sea in China, Mazu is at the centre of a host of beliefs and customs, including oral traditions, religious ceremonies and folk practices, throughout the countrys coastal areas. Mazu is believed to have lived in the tenth century on Meizhou Island, where she dedicated herself to helping her fellow townspeople, and died attempting to rescue the survivors of a shipwreck. Local residents built a temple in her honour and began to venerate her as a goddess. She is celebrated twice each year in formal temple fairs, when Meizhou residents, farmers and fisherfolk temporarily suspend their work to sacrifice marine animals, venerate statues of Mazu and enjoy a variety of dances and other performances. Smaller worship ceremonies take place throughout the year in the other 5,000 Mazu temples around the world and in private homes; these may involve floral tributes; candles, incense and firecrackers; and evening processions of residents bearing Mazu lanterns. Followers may implore the god for pregnancy, peace, the solution to a problem or general well-being. Deeply integrated into the lives of coastal Chinese and their descendants, belief in and commemoration of Mazu is an important cultural bond that promotes family harmony, social concord, and the social identity of these communities.

Thousands of believers on Monday gathered in south China's Shantou City to celebrate the third Mazu Festival, an occasion to worship the Mazu Goddess who is believed to be the guardian of seafarers.
The organizers of the event said that the festival also attracted many overseas Chinese from Singapore, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as Mazu is widely worshiped in south China's coastal regions such as Guangdong, Fujian and Taiwan.
The festival featured a traditional worship ceremony to pay tribute to the Mazu Goddess for her morality, charity and universal love.
The organizers say the ceremony follows the oldest worship process which can be traced back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279). The ceremony includes incense burning, eulogy reading and traditional music playing.
The organizers also raised 200,000 yuan for local poor families at the ceremony.

Mazu (goddess)
Mazu (traditional Chinese: 媽祖; simplified Chinese: 妈祖), also spelt Matsu and Ma-tsu, is the Chinese patron goddess who is said to protect seafarers, such as fishermen and sailors. The worship of Mazu began in the Song dynasty. Mazu is widely worshiped in the coastal regions of China, especially in Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Tianjin and Hainan. She is also worshiped in Taiwan and other places in East/Southeast Asia.
Her birthplace was Meizhou (湄州) in Putian County (莆田縣), Fujian Province. She was born in the year 960. Her family had the surname Lin (林). She had the name Lin Moniang (Chinese: 林默娘). She died on 4 October 987. After her death, she was remembered as a young lady in a red dress, who would forever roam over the seas.

Mazu Festival in Taiwan
Mazu was originally Lin Moniang, who, according to one version of this legend, died at age 16 of exhaustion after swimming far into the ocean trying to find her lost father and that her corpse later washed ashore in Nankan Island of the Matsu Islands. After her death, the families of many fishermen and sailors began to pray to her in honor of her acts of courage in trying to save those at sea. Her worship spread quickly. Much of her popularity in comparison to other sea deities resulted from her role as a compassionate motherly protector. Initially, Mazu just blessed the sea for fishermen. But as time went by, people prayed to her for health, career, farming, relationship, and all sorts of concerns. She has become a guardian angel for Taiwanese people. She is celebrated twice each year in formal temple fairs, when Meizhou residents, farmers and fisherfolk temporarily suspend their work to sacrifice marine animals, venerate statues of Mazu and enjoy a variety of dances and other performances. Smaller worship ceremonies take place throughout the year in the other 5,000 Mazu temples around the world and in private homes; these may involve floral tributes; candles, incense and firecrackers; and evening processions of residents bearing Mazu lanterns. Followers may implore the god for pregnancy, peace, the solution to a problem or general well-being. Deeply integrated into the lives of coastal Chinese and their descendants, belief in and commemoration of Mazu is an important cultural bond that promotes family harmony, social concord, and the social identity of these communities.

Thousands of believers on Monday gathered in south China's Shantou City to celebrate the third Mazu Festival, an occasion to worship the Mazu Goddess who is believed to be the guardian of seafarers.
The organizers of the event said that the festival also attracted many overseas Chinese from Singapore, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as Mazu is widely worshiped in south China's coastal regions such as Guangdong, Fujian and Taiwan.
The festival featured a traditional worship ceremony to pay tribute to the Mazu Goddess for her morality, charity and universal love.
The organizers say the ceremony follows the oldest worship process which can be traced back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279). The ceremony includes incense burning, eulogy reading and traditional music playing.
The organizers also raised 200,000 yuan for local poor families at the ceremony.

Mazu was originally Lin Moniang, who, according to one version of this legend, died at age 16 of exhaustion after swimming far into the ocean trying to find her lost father and that her corpse later washed ashore in Nankan Island of the Matsu Islands. After her death, the families of many fishermen and sailors began to pray to her in honor of her acts of courage in trying to save those at sea. Her worship spread quickly. Much of her popularity in comparison to other sea deities resulted from her role as a compassionate motherly protector.
Initially, Mazu just blessed the sea for fishermen. But as time went by, people prayed to her for health, career, farming, relationship, and all sorts of concerns. She has become a guardian angel for Taiwanese people. According to a research team studying Taiwanese Folk Religion at the Providence University in central Taiwan, Mazu has to go on a tour of inspection every year.
