Shohaku Okumura, nato a Osaka nel 1948, si è laureato all'università Komazawa. Nel 1970 ha preso l'ordinazione monastica al monastero Antaiji di Kyoto, divenendo discepolo di Kosho Uchiyama Roshi che, cinque anni dopo, l'ha nominato suo successore nel Dharma nel lignaggio di Kodo Sawaki Roshi. Dopo un periodo di formazione al monastero Zuioji, si è recato in Massachusetts, dove ha praticato fino al 1981 al Pioneer Valley Zendo. Dal 1995 al 2010 è stato direttore del Soto Zen Buddhism International Center di San Francisco, e attualmente vive e insegna a Bloomington, Indiana, dove ha fondato la Sanshin Zen Community. A lui si deve la traduzione dal giapponese di molti testi fondamentali della tradizione zen Soto: scritti di Dogen Zenji, quali lo Shobogenzo Zuimonki e il Bendowa, e del suo maestro Kosho Uchiyama Roshi, di cui ha curato il volume Aprire la mano del pensiero. Il suo ultimo libro "Genjokoan" è stato recentemente pubblicato da Ubaldini Editore. Shohaku Okumura was born in Osaka in 1948; he graduated from Komazawa University. In 1970 he took monastic ordination at Antaiji monastery Kyoto, becoming disciple of Kosho Uchiyama Roshi who, five years later, appointed him as his Dharma successor in the lineage of Kodo Sawaki Roshi.
