Chaitanya Tamhane (born March 1, 1987, Mumbai, Maharashtra) is the writer and director of the Marathi movie Court, a 2015 Indian courtroom drama film. It was announced as India's official submission for the 88th Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The film examines the Indian legal system through the trial of an aging folk singer in a lower court in Mumbai.
Court is Tamhane's directorial debut for a feature length film. His previous work includes the short film Six Strands, of which he was also the writer and director, as well as producer. For Court, Tamhane was nominated for best screenwriter at the 9th Asian Film Awards and won best director at the 16th Mumbai Film Festival, among many other awards and honors.
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (also transliterated Caitanya, IAST Caitanya Mahāprabhu; 18 February 1486 – 14 June 1534) was a Bengali spiritual teacher. He is believed by his devotees to be Krishna himself who appeared in the form of His own devotee in order to teach the people of this world the process of Bhakti and how to attain the perfection of life. He is considered as the most merciful manifestation of Krishna. Chaitanya was the proponent for the Vaishnava school of Bhakti yoga (meaning loving devotion to God), based on Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita. Of various incarnations of Vishnu, he is revered as Krishna, popularised the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra and composed the Siksastakam (eight devotional prayers) in Sanskrit. His followers, Gaudiya Vaishnavas, revere him as a Krishna with the mood and complexion of his source of inspiration Radha.
Chaitanya is sometimes referred to by the names Gauranga or Gaura due to his fair complexion, and Nimai due to his being born underneath a Neem tree. There is no evidence, however, that he was born under a Neem Tree. He was very naughty in his young days. His original name was Vishambhar. He was a brilliant student and Nimai was his nickname. At an early age he became an scholar and opened a school. His teachings helped flourish Bhakti movement in east India, particularly Bengal and Odisha from 16th century onwards.
Narendra Shankar Tamhane pronunciation (4 August 1931, Bombay – 19 March 2002, Mumbai) was an Indian cricketer who played in 21 Tests from 1955 to 1960. He was a wicket-keeper-batsman.
His first-class career extended from 1951-52 to 1968-69. He played in the Ranji Trophy for Bombay from 1953-54 to 1963-64.
Later he served on the selection committees for Mumbai and India which selected Sachin Tendulkar for first-class and international cricket.
A court is a tribunal, often as governmental institution, with the authority to adjudicate legal disputes between parties and carry out the administration of justice in civil, criminal, and administrative matters in accordance with the rule of law. In both common law and civil law legal systems, courts are the central means for dispute resolution, and it is generally understood that all persons have an ability to bring their claims before a court. Similarly, the rights of those accused of a crime include the right to present a defense before a court.
The system of courts that interprets and applies the law is collectively known as the judiciary. The place where a court sits is known as a venue. The room where court proceedings occur is known as a courtroom, and the building as a courthouse; court facilities range from simple and very small facilities in rural communities to large buildings in cities.
The practical authority given to the court is known as its jurisdiction (Latin jus dicere) – the court's power to decide certain kinds of questions or petitions put to it. According to William Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England, a court is constituted by a minimum of three parties: the actor or plaintiff, who complains of an injury done; the reus or defendant, who is called upon to make satisfaction for it, and the judex or judicial power, which is to examine the truth of the fact, to determine the law arising upon that fact, and, if any injury appears to have been done, to ascertain and by its officers to apply a legal remedy. It is also usual in the superior courts to have barristers, and attorneys or counsel, as assistants, though, often, courts consist of additional barristers, bailiffs, reporters, and perhaps a jury.
A film festival is an organized, extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Increasingly, film festivals show some films outdoors. Films may be of recent date and, depending upon the festival's focus, can include international and domestic releases. Some festivals focus on a specific film-maker or genre (e.g., film noir) or subject matter (e.g., horror film festivals). A number of film festivals specialise in short films of a defined maximum length. Film festivals are typically annual events. Some film historians do not consider Film Festivals as official releases of film, like Jerry Beck. The best known film festivals are the Venice Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, the Toronto Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, and the Berlin International Film Festival, the latter being the largest film festival worldwide, based on attendance. The Venice Film Festival is the oldest major festival. The Melbourne International Film Festival is the largest film festival in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the oldest in the world. A 2013 study found 3,000 active films festivals worldwide—active defined as having held an event in the previous 24 months.

Court the film, which has received glowing reviews in publications all across the world, is a courtroom drama that has been praised for its realism and attention to detail. Focusing on the trial of an ageing folk singer who has been arrested for abetting a sewerage worker’s suicide through his supposedly inflammatory songs, Court puts the Indian judicial system under a microscope. By observing not only the proceedings of the case, but also the lives of all the players involved, it paints a picture of a rapidly-changing India at odds with its diversity and history.
A seemingly simple film it weaves a complex tapestry of our society using disparate strands - our arcane laws, the sapping judicial system, the pathetic condition of Dalits, the price of political activism, and above all the banal cruelty and helplessness of middle class lives. The fact that Tamhane is just 28 years old, somehow makes what he’s created even more special. He allows Anuradha SenGupta, albeit guardedly, to decode his art and craft. After winning film festival awards around the globe, COURT finally comes to America. From 28-year-old filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane, Court is a deadpan indictment of India's court system, one which favors colonial law over logic and reason. Narayan Kamble (Vira Sathidar) is an elderly folk singer and political activist who gets arrested on frivolous charges of abetting the suicide of a sewage worker. His lawyer, Vinay Vora (Vivek Gomber) spends arduous, tedious months working to free his client.
