Alexander Arturovich Rou (also, Rowe, from his Irish father's name) (Russian: Александр Артурович Роу, 24 February [O.S. 11 February] 1906 – 28 December 1973) was a Soviet film director, and People's Artist of the RSFSR (1968). He worked primarily in the fairy-tale genre.
He was born to an Irish father (Arthur Rowe), hence his unusual for Russia family name. He had Greek mother.
Starting in 1930, he worked at Mezhrabpomfilm as an assistant director to Yakov Protazanov on the films Marionettes (1934) and Without Dowry (1937), as well as with other directors.
From 1937, he worked at the "Soyuzdetfilm" studio, later known as the Gorky Film Studio.
Vera Vladimirovna Altayskaya (Russian: Ве́ра Влади́мировна Алта́йская) (21 May 1919 - 28 December 1978) was a Soviet actress known for her roles in children's fairy tale films and comedies.
Born in Petrograd, she was the adoptive daughter of Konstantin Altaysky-Korolyov, a poet and translator, and his wife Vera Petrovna, a pianist. In the late 1930s she moved to Moscow, where in 1940 she graduated from drama school at the Mosfilm studio and joined the studio's repertoire of actors. Her first prominent role was in Yuli Raizman's 1942 film Mashenka.
She married Aleksei Konsovsky, a fellow actor, with whom she had a daughter, Svetlana. In recognition of her film work during the 1940s she received the Medal "For Valiant Labour in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945".
In Mashenka, Altayskaya had played a young beauty, but she later transitioned to character roles. For most of her career, she was typecast as shrewish or matronly characters. She appeared in many children's fairy-tale films, most notably Aleksandr Rou's 1964 film Jack Frost, in which she played a domineering stepmother. She died in Moscow after a brief illness, and her ashes are interred in the columbarium of Vagankovo Cemetery alongside those of her adoptive parents.
Gorky Film Studio (Russian: Киностудия имени Горького) is a film studio in Moscow, Russian Federation. By the end of the Soviet Union, Gorky Film Studio had produced more than 1,000 films. Many film classics were filmed at the Gorky Film Studio throughout its history and some of these were granted international awards at various film festivals.
In 1915, Mikhail Semenovich Trofimov, a merchant from Kostroma, established the Rus' film production unit (Russian: "Киноателье «Русь»") with studio facilities. In 1936, the studio was transferred to Butyrskaya Street in Moscow. The Rus' studio, employing many actors from Stanislavsky's Moscow Art Theatre, specialized in film adaptations of Russian classics (e.g., Tolstoy's Polikushka, 1919).
In 1924, the Rus' studio was renamed into the International Workers Relief agency (Russian: Международная рабочая помощь (Межрабпом)), abbreviated as Mezhrabpom-Rus' (Russian: Межрабпом-Русь). The first Soviet (sci-fi) film, Aelita, was filmed at this studio in 1924.

Everest. On May 10, 1996, two commercial expeditions headed by experienced leaders attempted to climb the highest mountain in the world, but things went terribly wrong. Crowded conditions on the mountain, miscommunications, unexplainable delays, poor leadership, bad decisions, and a blinding storm conspired to kill. Twenty-three men and women, disoriented and out of oxygen, struggled to find their way down the side of the mountain. In the dark, battered by snow and driven by hurricane-force winds, some of the climbers became hopelessly lost and resigned themselves to death. But head climbing gu...
