Subramaniapuram is a 2008 Tamil film produced, written, and directed by M. Sasikumar. The low-budget film received critical acclaim for its original script, expert direction, screenplay, editing, accurate sets and costumes to resurrect Madurai from the 1980s. Sasikumar cast then relatively new actors Jai, Swathi, Ganja Karuppu and himself in pivotal roles. Shot in a remarkable 85 days, it became a huge box office grosser. Sasikumar is now considered one of the promising young directors in Tamil film industry.The film was latter dubbed into Telugu with the name Ananthapuram 1980. It was remade in Kannada with the name Prem Adda which opened to generally positive reviews on December 7, 2012.
The story takes place in the Subramaniapuram area of Madurai city. A convict is released from prison in 2008 and is stabbed outside the prison gates...
The film then moves to 1980 where Azaghar (Jai), Paraman (M. Sasikumar), Kaasi (Ganja Karuppu), Dopa and Dumka, a polio-stricken physically challenged person, are part of a set of close friends, who are unemployed. They pass their time drinking liquor and fooling around on the streets opposite the house of an ex-councilor Somu and his brother Kanugu (Samuthirakani). Apart from them the family consists of Somu's wife, their three children including Thulasi (Swathi) and Thulasi's another uncle.
M. Sasikumar (born 28 September 1975) is a Tamil film director, actor and producer. He is best known in the Tamil film industry for his debut film Subramaniapuram (2008). The low-budget film received attention for its original script, direction, screenplay, editing and accurate sets and costumes resurrecting Madurai from the 1980s.
Sasikumar studied at St. Peters School Kodaikanal and then went onto study business administration in Vellaichamy Nadar College, Madurai. He began working in films through his uncle Kandasaamy when he was 20, who produced Sethu (1999). Sasikumar worked as an assistant director for the film, where he made the acquaintance of Ameer, who also assisting and went on to make a name for himself. He assisted director Ameer in Mounam Pesiyadhe (2002) and Raam (2005). It was during the initial phases of Ameer's Paruthiveeran (2007) that he began his groundwork for Subramaniapuram and left the production to focus on his film.
Sasikumar is married and has a son and a daughter. He revealed in an interview that he wants his family to not be in the spotlight because it would invade their privacy.
Ganja Karuppu, born Karuppu Raja, is an Indian film actor who plays comedy roles in Tamil cinema. He has appeared in Tamil films like Raam (2005), Paruthiveeran (2007), Subramaniyapuram (2008), and Naadodigal(2009, Kalavani (2010).
Ganja Karuppu made his film debut in a small supporting role in Bala's Pithamagan in 2003. He appeared as Vazhavandhaan in the 2005 thriller film Raam directed by Ameer Sultan. Subsequently, he was signed up in a number of Tamil films to provide comic relief, including Thaamirabharani, Paruthiveeran, Subramaniapuram, Naadodigal and Kalavani. He co-starred in the 2008 comedy film Arai En 305-il Kadavul by Chimbudevan.
He is married to Sangeetha, a physiotherapist, in 2010.

James Vasanthan is a popular Indian television (Tamil) anchor and a film music composer. For more than a decade, he has worked as an anchor in popular Tamil satellite television channels like Sun TV, Vijay TV and Makkal TV before turning into a film music composer in the Tamil Film Industry.
James Vasanthan was born in Tiruchirapalli (Trichy), studied first at YWCA Primary School (Presently BHEL Matric) and later at Bishop Heber Hr Sec School (Teppakulam) and later graduated in English literature in Bishop Heber College, and then did his PG in English in Jamal Mohammad College. Later, he educated himself on Carnatic music from Madras University and in Western music from Trinity College, U.K. He holds a diploma in Pianoforte, Guitar and Theory of Music. Though music was his "first love", he forayed into television as an anchor in SUN TV.
He has composed music for many good Christian cassettes numbering around 300. He still continues to arrange music for many gospel productions. In 2008, he eventually entered the Chennai film industry as a music director by composing the songs and score for the Tamil film Subramaniyapuram, directed by M. Sasikumar, who was a student at St.Peter's Public School in Kodaikanal, where James Vasanthan went to teach music after his post-graduation. This film 'Subramaniyapuram' which went on to become a blockbuster brought him into prominence with the film's songs and background score gaining fame and being praised and the song "Kangal Irandal" topping the charts and being cited as the "anthem of the year among the youth".
