Metalworking is the process of working with metals to create individual parts, assemblies, or large-scale structures. The term covers a wide range of work from large ships and bridges to precise engine parts and delicate jewelry. It therefore includes a correspondingly wide range of skills, processes, and tools.
Metalworking is a science, art, hobby, industry and trade. Its historical roots span cultures, civilizations, and millennia. Metalworking has evolved from the discovery of smelting various ores, producing malleable and ductile metal useful for tools and adornments. Modern metalworking processes, though diverse and specialized, can be categorized as forming, cutting, or joining processes. Today's machine shop includes a number of machine tools capable of creating a precise, useful workpiece.
The oldest archaeological evidence of copper mining and working was the discovery of a copper pendant in northern Iraq from 8,700 BCE. The earliest substantiated and dated evidence of metalworking in the Americas was the processing of copper in Wisconsin, near Lake Michigan. Copper was hammered until brittle then heated so it could be worked some more. This technology is dated to about 4000-5000 BCE. The oldest gold artifacts in the world come from the Bulgarian Varna Necropolis and date from 4450 BCE.
Alan John Williams (14 October 1930 – 21 December 2014) was a British Labour Party politician, who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Swansea West from 1964 to 2010. He was the longest serving MP for a Welsh constituency since David Lloyd George and built a reputation for his detailed scrutiny of the ways in which public money was spent.
Williams was born in Caerphilly, the son of Emlyn, a former miner who became a local government officer, and Violet (née Ross). He was educated at Cardiff High School for Boys (a state grammar school) then Cardiff College of Technology and Commerce when he gained a BSc in economics in 1954 (awarded by the University of London). At University College, Oxford, he studied PPE. He became an economics lecturer at the Welsh College of Advanced Technology then a broadcaster and journalist.

Thomas Callahan, owner of Horse Cycles, invited CH to his Williamsburg workshop to show us around and explain a little about his impressive craft. A sculpture major in art school, Callahan had a knack for fixing his friends' bikes—and that hobby quickly shifted into a career building bikes from scratch. Callahan's intention is creating the perfect sized bike for a customer; encouraging the new owner to treasure it and ride it forever.
Check out the trailer for my upcoming 16mm animation film: METAL LASER CITY. I've been working on this film since 2009 and it's finally coming to an end. It's a film using many different techniques like collage, light-painting, stencils, multiple exposure and optical sound. The whole film is shot with a Bolex 16mm camera and what you will see is all done with the camera. No after effects! The films main theme is about an apocalyptic city and some of it's bizarre and tragic inhabitants! (Note: part of the trailer is done digitally and only produced for the trailer.)
