In Chile, the Mapuche communities make up roughly 12 percent of the country's population.
They have historically been the poorest and most discriminated-against sector of society.
In fact, Chile is one of a few countries in the world whose constitution does not recognise its Indigenous peoples.
The conflict against the state has been simmering for years, but in recent months more radical Mapuche groups have been attacking and torching hundreds of trucks, farms, homes, forest lands owned by lumber companies and even trains.
So, is there a path to peaceful coexistence?

The Mapuche People(s).., their culture, background & affiliations

The Mapuche Peoples are a group of Indigenous Peoples of south-central Chile and southwestern Argentina. including parts of present-day Patagonia.
The collective term refers to a wide-ranging ethnicity composed of various groups, who shared a common social, religious and economic structure, as well as a common linguistic heritage, as Mapudungun speakers.
Their influence once extended from the Aconcagua River to the Chiloé Archipelago and spread later, eastward to the Argentine pampa.
Today, the collective group makes up over 80% of the Indigenous Peoples in Chile and about 9% of the total Chilean population. They are particularly concentrated in Araucanía.
Many Mapuche People have migrated to the Santiago and Buenos Aires area for economic opportunities, while others, have travelled as far north, as Canada.

Chile's Indigenous Mapuche community once occupied most of the south of the country.
In the 19th century, they were rounded up into small settlements.
Most of their land was taken during the Pinochet dictatorship in the 1980s.
Since the country's return to democracy, they have been promised some of it back.
But progress is slow. Many Mapuche are not willing to wait, so they are reclaiming their territory by force.
Al Jazeera’s editor Lucia Newman travelled to Collipulli in south-central Chile for an interview with the leader of the largest rebel organisation Arauco-Malleco Coordinaer or CAM.

Mapuche
The Mapuche are a group of indigenous inhabitants of south-central Chile and southwestern Argentina, including parts of present-day Patagonia. The collective term refers to a wide-ranging ethnicity composed of various groups who shared a common social, religious and economic structure, as well as a common linguistic heritage as Mapudungun speakers. Their influence once extended from the Aconcagua River to the Chiloé Archipelago and spread later eastward to the Argentine pampa. Today the collective group makes up over 80% of the indigenous peoples in Chile, and about 9% of the total Chilean population. They are particularly concentrated in Araucanía. Many have migrated to the Santiago area for economic opportunities.
The term Mapuche is used both to refer collectively to the Picunche (people of the north), Huilliche (people of the South) and Moluche or Nguluche from Araucanía, or at other times, exclusively to the Moluche or Nguluche from Araucanía. The Mapuche traditional economy is based on agriculture; their traditional social organisation consists of extended families, under the direction of a lonko or chief. In times of war, they would unite in larger groupings and elect a toki (meaning "axe, axe-bearer") to lead them. They are known for the textiles woven by women, which have been goods for trade for centuries, since before European encounter.

The Mapuche People(s).., their culture, background & affiliations

The Mapuche Peoples are a group of Indigenous Peoples of south-central Chile and southwestern Argentina. including parts of present-day Patagonia.
The collective term refers to a wide-ranging ethnicity composed of various groups, who shared a common social, religious and economic structure, as well as a common linguistic heritage, as Mapudungun speakers.
Their influence once extended from the Aconcagua River to the Chiloé Archipelago and spread later, eastward to the Argentine pampa.
Today, the collective group makes up over 80% of the Indigenous Peoples in Chile and about 9% of the total Chilean population. They are particularly concentrated in Araucanía.
Many Mapuche People have migrated to the Santiago and Buenos Aires area for economic opportunities, while others, have travelled as far north, as Canada.

Al Jazeera’s editor Lucia Newman travelled to Collipulli in south-central Chile for an interview with the leader of the largest rebel organisation Arauco-Malleco Coordinaer or CAM.

In Chile, the Mapuche communities make up roughly 12 percent of the country's population.
They have historically been the poorest and most discriminated-against sector of society.
In fact, Chile is one of a few countries in the world whose constitution does not recognise its Indigenous peoples.
The conflict against the state has been simmering for years, but in recent months more radical Mapuche groups have been attacking and torching hundreds of trucks, farms, homes, forest lands owned by lumber companies and even trains.
So, is there a path to peaceful coexistence?

Chile's Indigenous Mapuche community once occupied most of the south of the country.
In the 19th century, they were rounded up into small settlements.
Most of their land was taken during the Pinochet dictatorship in the 1980s.
Since the country's return to democracy, they have been promised some of it back.
But progress is slow. Many Mapuche are not willing to wait, so they are reclaiming their territory by force.
Al Jazeera’s editor Lucia Newman travelled to Collipulli in south-central Chile for an interview with the leader of the largest rebel organisation Arauco-Malleco Coordinaer or CAM.

Mapuche
The Mapuche are a group of indigenous inhabitants of south-central Chile and southwestern Argentina, including parts of present-day Patagonia. The collective term refers to a wide-ranging ethnicity composed of various groups who shared a common social, religious and economic structure, as well as a common linguistic heritage as Mapudungun speakers. Their influence once extended from the Aconcagua River to the Chiloé Archipelago and spread later eastward to the Argentine pampa. Today the collective group makes up over 80% of the indigenous peoples in Chile, and about 9% of the total Chilean population. They are particularly concentrated in Araucanía. Many have migrated to the Santiago area for economic opportunities.
The term Mapuche is used both to refer collectively to the Picunche (people of the north), Huilliche (people of the South) and Moluche or Nguluche from Araucanía, or at other times, exclusively to the Moluche or Nguluche from Araucanía. The Mapuche traditional economy is based on agriculture; their traditional social organisation consists of extended families, under the direction of a lonko or chief. In times of war, they would unite in larger groupings and elect a toki (meaning "axe, axe-bearer") to lead them. They are known for the textiles woven by women, which have been goods for trade for centuries, since before European encounter.
