Interstate 85

Interstate 85 (I-85) is a major interstate highway in the Southeastern United States. Its current southern terminus is at an interchange with Interstate 65 in Montgomery, Alabama; its northern terminus interchanges with Interstate 95 in Petersburg, Virginia, near Richmond. It is nominally north-south, but physically mostly northeast-southwest. While most interstates that end in a five are cross-country routes, I-85 is mainly a regional route, serving five southeastern states. Major metropolitan areas served by I-85 include the Greater Richmond Region in Virginia, the Research Triangle, Piedmont Triad, and Metrolina regions of North Carolina, Upstate South Carolina, the Atlanta metropolitan area in Georgia, and the Montgomery metropolitan area in Alabama.

Route description

I-85 is a route that serves several major locations in the Southeastern United States, stretching from Alabama to Virginia and major metropolitan areas such as Atlanta and Charlotte.

Alabama

Interstate 85 begins as a fork off Interstate 65 in Montgomery. From there, I-85 parallels U.S. Route 80 until the highway nears Tuskegee. At Tuskegee, I-85 leaves U.S. 80 and starts to parallel U.S. Route 29, which the highway parallels for much of its length.

UAV/drone (DJI Phantom 3 Advanced) footage of northern 2.5-mile stretch (south of the "Brookwood Split") of Atlanta's "Downtown Connector." The video has post-production time compression (sped up) to expose/highlight traffic movement and patterns. The Downtown Connector is the convergence of interstates 75 & 85 over a 7-mile stretch running through the middle of the largest city in the southeastern United States. It's construction in the 1950s undermined Atlanta's organized street-grid, isolated (geographically and economically) several East Atlanta neighborhoods from the city's Downtown/Midtown cultural/economic centers, and made much east/west travel virtually impossible without an automobile (and delay). The video has post-production time compression (sped up) to expose/highlight traffic movement and patterns. The Downtown Connector is the convergence of interstates 75 & 85 over a 7-mile stretch running through the middle of the largest city in the southeastern United States. It's construction in the 1950s undermined Atlanta's organized street-grid, isolated (geographically and economically) several East Atlanta neighborhoods from the city's Downtown/Midtown cultural/economic centers, and made much east/west travel virtually impossible without an automobile (and delay). English was not common at all, even in the touristy District 1. Good idea to learn some basic words in Vietnamese like: Hello, thank you, No, friend, etc. Get your hotel reception staff to organise taxis, tours, and advice on fair prices. Most hotels have small local maps and cards in English, so you can use them communicate with taxi drivers. Traffic may seem hectic and chaotic, but they make it work. When you cross the road on foot, do it slowly and traffic will avoid you. If you run, traffic cannot predict you, so may hit you. HCMC is the government name of the city, the locals still call it Saigon. Many shops, maps, and even travel bookings will say Saigon. UAV/drone (DJI Phantom 3 Advanced) footage of northern 2.5-mile stretch (south of the "Brookwood Split") of Atlanta's "Downtown Connector." The video has post-production time compression (sped up) to expose/highlight traffic movement and patterns. The Downtown Connector is the convergence of interstates 75 & 85 over a 7-mile stretch running through the middle of the largest city in the southeastern United States. It's construction in the 1950s undermined Atlanta's organized street-grid, isolated (geographically and economically) several East Atlanta neighborhoods from the city's Downtown/Midtown cultural/economic centers, and made much east/west travel virtually impossible without an automobile (and delay). In recent years, various plans for burying the Connector (conversion to a tunnel system, such as Boston's) or erect elaborate networks of landscaped pedestrian bridges above it have been discussed, and it's likely such plans will be implemented in forthcoming decades. Presently, about 250,000 vehicles pass through the connector each day.

English was not common at all, even in the touristy District 1. Good idea to learn some basic words in Vietnamese like: Hello, thank you, No, friend, etc. Get your hotel reception staff to organise taxis, tours, and advice on fair prices. Most hotels have small local maps and cards in English, so you can use them communicate with taxi drivers. Traffic may seem hectic and chaotic, but they make it work. When you cross the road on foot, do it slowly and traffic will avoid you. If you run, traffic cannot predict you, so may hit you. HCMC is the government name of the city, the locals still call it Saigon. Many shops, maps, and even travel bookings will say Saigon. When shopping at markets, try negotiate 1/4 (25%) the seller's price. Then negotiate and barter from there. Eg if its priced VD1000K offer VD250K. Most sellers at Ben Than Market tried ripping me off on clothes and souvenirs. Do a lap or check out a few vendors first to compare prices. The average basic worker earns VD 200K a day. So tipping VD 40-50K is pretty generous. I found the locals very conservative / traditional. They were often camera shy, and would even hide. Many businesses would not allow camera use on their premises, or they get very upset. Locals were also scared of undercover police (eg being camera shy). Police in general are known for being tough on crime and having zero tolerance.
