The German Democratic Republic (GDR; German: Deutsche Demokratische Republik [ˈdɔʏtʃə demoˈkʀaːtɪʃə ʀepuˈbliːk] or DDR), informally known as East Germany (German: Ostdeutschland), was a socialist state established by the USSR in 1949 in the Soviet zone of occupied Germany, including East Berlin of the Allied-occupied capital city. The GDR had an area of 107,771 km2 (41,610 mi2), bordering Czechoslovakia to the south, West Germany to the south and west, Poland to the east, and the Baltic Sea to the north. East Germany was dissolved upon joining the institutions of West Germany in the German reunification, on 3 October 1990.

Tramar Dillard (born December 16, 1979) better known by his stage name Flo Rida (pronounced 
/floʊ ˈraɪdə/), is an American rapper. He released his debut album, Mail on Sunday, in March 2008. His debut single "Low", featuring T-Pain, was a No. 1 hit for ten weeks in United States in early 2008. Two other singles resulted from Mail on Sunday: "Elevator" and "In the Ayer". In 2009, his second album R.O.O.T.S. was released; its most successful single "Right Round" was at the top of the Hot 100 for six weeks. Since then, he has released his third studio album titled Only One Flo (Part 1), which will see a sequel titled Wild Ones.

Back in the times of the GDR (German Democratic Republic), it was nearly impossible for chefs to get their hands on a lot of basic ingredients. Most meals were born out of necessity, with chefs really having to flex their creativity. GDR food was also heavily influenced by the recipes of the USSR. Our host Stacy Denzel Janmaat leads us on a journey to find what is left of the notorious GDR cuisine, 25 years after the fall of the Berlin wall. In the East-German city of Leipzig, the “Gaststätte Kollektiv” aims to recreate the GDR dining experience through its detailed interior and food. The 29-year-old owner and chef was born in Leipzig, and although he was still quite young when the wall came down, he was still able to tell us about the days of limited food availability. Back in Berlin, we go on the lookout for traditional GDR snacks. Though snack stands were rare in the GDR, the precious few outlets for fast food served mainly Ketwurst (a kind of hot dog) and Grilletta (a take on a hamburger). Fortunately, we find a spot where the traditional Ketwurst has somehow managed to survive the return of the hot dog. We then accompany our host as he goes shopping at the only remaining GDR supermarket in Berlin to buy the ingredients for a 3-course menu of Soljanka (a Russian meat stew with red peppers, cucumbers and capers), fried veal’s liver with onions and potatoes, and the GDR version of French toast. Searching for East Germany's Communist Cuisine
Back in the times of the GDR (German Democratic Republic), it was nearly impossible for chefs to get their hands on a lot of basic ingredients. Most meals were born out of necessity, with chefs really having to flex their creativity. GDR food was also heavily influenced by the recipes of the USSR. Our host Stacy Denzel Janmaat leads us on a journey to find what is left of the notorious GDR cuisine, 25 years after the fall of the Berlin wall. In the East-German city of Leipzig, the “Gaststätte Kollektiv” aims to recreate the GDR dining experience through its detailed interior and food. The 29-year-old owner and chef was born in Leipzig, and although he was still quite young when the wall came down, he was still able to tell us about the days of limited food availability. Back in the times of the GDR (German Democratic Republic), it was nearly impossible for chefs to get their hands on a lot of basic ingredients. Most meals were born out of necessity, with chefs really having to flex their creativity. GDR food was also heavily influenced by the recipes of the USSR. Our host Stacy Denzel Janmaat leads us on a journey to find what is left of the notorious GDR cuisine, 25 years after the fall of the Berlin wall.
In the East-German city of Leipzig, the “Gaststätte Kollektiv” aims to recreate the GDR dining experience through its detailed interior and food. The 29-year-old owner and chef was born in Leipzig, and although he was still quite young when the wall came down, he was still able to tell us about the days of limited food availability.
Back in Berlin, we go on the lookout for traditional GDR snacks. Though snack stands were rare in the GDR, the precious few outlets for fast food served mainly Ketwurst (a kind of hot dog) and Grilletta (a take on a hamburger). Fortunately, we find a spot where the traditional Ketwurst has somehow managed to survive the return of the hot dog.
We then accompany our host as he goes shopping at the only remaining GDR supermarket in Berlin to buy the ingredients for a 3-course menu of Soljanka (a Russian meat stew with red peppers, cucumbers and capers), fried veal’s liver with onions and potatoes, and the GDR version of French toast. Watch as our host whips it up in his own kitchen for a dinner with friends.

For the "It wasn't socialism it was communism" crowd
Real Existing Socialism is the term used by the GDR leadership itself to describe its society. Communism was an aspiration. Socialism was what they felt they had achieved and "Real Existing Socialism" was regarded as a milestone on the way and proclaimed loudly and widely in the 1960s. The name of the Party ruling the GDR reflected this - the SED (Socialist Unity Party of Germany)
"Real Existing Socialism" was was also used extremely ironically by many in the West to describe the awful economic and political situation "next door". I use it in this sense.
I did NOT mean to somehow fuel the arguments of those in the United States who feel that Universal Health Care is "creeping socialism" which will lead to another Berlin Wall!
A few other things:
West Berlin did not belong to West Germany. It was under direct Allied control.
The water belonged to the GDR and so did the very edge of the river bank.
There is NO WAY that by the late 1980s the GDR soldiers would have shot into the grounds of the Reichstag river bank. Once the escapees were away from the water they were safe.

The East Side Gallery is the longest remaining strip of the of the former dividing wall between East and West Berlin. Today the 1.3 kilometer long wall stands as a memorial to freedom and it is covered in art and graffiti. Right now we're visiting Brandenburg Gate. This gate dates back to the 18th Century. We're here at Tiergarten, one of the biggest parks in the city. MauerPark is a hipster hangout. Every Sunday people flock to this park and spend the day barbecuing, listening to music, enjoying a few beers, and simply having a good time. There's a popular flea market where you can pick up old vinyls and clothes, and if you head over to the Bear Pit you can catch some karaoke and musical performances. If you want to spot some cool street art, then head over to Friedrichshain. You can't come to Berlin and not eat a Currywurst! This is the city's most popular fast food snack. The sausage is served with a ketchup and curry powder concoction. Up next we're at the Reichstag building which has a pretty cool glass dome on top. This dome is actually open to visitors and it offers 360 degree views of the city. Today we're visiting Tempelhof, a re-purposed airport here in Berlin for leisure activities and sports. If you enjoy museums and art galleries you'll want to visit Berlin's Museum Island. They actually have five different museums here and if you get a daily pass for 18 Euros you get access to all five. We are now visiting the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin. It is also known as the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. Charlottenburg Palace is the largest palace in Berlin and the only surviving royal residence in the city. Checkpoint Charlie was one of the crossing points between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War. Located near Alexanderplatz, The Berlin TV Tower offers a great lookout over the city. Chocolate! Ritter Sport is a chocolate brand that is sold all over Germany, and while in Berlin we couldn't resist sampling a few of the different varieties. Berlin Cathedral is located on Museum Island and it's one of the most beautiful churches in the city. If Currywurst is to your liking, you'll want to check out this quirky museum devoted to Berlin's favorite sausage. Renting a bike is a great way to get around the city. Most places will rent out bikes at 10 Euros per day. For a leisurely afternoon, hop on a boat and enjoy a tour down the River Spree. Of course, you cannot come to Berlin and not eat a Wurst or a sausage. The Friedrichshain flea market takes place every Sunday and it's a great place for people watching and a little browsing. The Germans sure know how to enjoy a hearty breakfast, and we recommend you try it too. Breakfast usually offers a wide sampling of loafs and bread rolls, accompanied with various deli cuts and cheese.
We couldn't resist visiting yet another cat cafe while we were in Berlin.
While in Berlin we enjoyed a hearty meal of Schnitzel. This thin strip of meat is coated in flour, eggs, and breadcrumbs, before being deep-fried. You can order it with a side of mashed potatoes or German noodles known as Spaetzle. It's quite easy to get around Berlin using the U-bahn and S-bahn system. In Berlin, there is a big Turkish population and that means there is awesome Turkish street food. And that's Berlin for you! A city that has risen from the ashes of the war, which is now bursting with art, music, and life.

Things to do in Germany | Top Attractions Travel Guide
Germany was a country we fell in love with. Having spent a lot of time in SE Asia, we felt the need for a change of pace and Germany was just that. From urban hubs like Berlin to hidden gems like Freiburg, Germany offers a lot for those willing to explore and dig a little deeper.
We start off our top attractions travel guide to Germany by focusing on Berlin. Below are the top 25 things to consider doing in the city:

Recently we had the opportunity to visit Europa-Park, the largest theme park in Germany and second most popular theme resort in all of Europe.
This was the perfect opportunity for us to rekindle our childhood passion for rides. With over eleven different roller coasters alone we quickly realized we had never been to such a big theme park.
What we found cool was that the theme park was divided into different European countries. If you can't visit all of Europe going to Europa Park is like getting little slivers of it all.
Accommodating up to 50,000 guests per day, we were fortunate we didn't come during peak season; however, it was still crowded.
Overall, the weather was perfect, the rides were fun and it is an experience we won't forget anytime soon.
This is a bit of a surprise. We have an eight hour wait for a flight in Frankfurt, so instead of just hanging around in the airport, which was our original plan, we decided to drop our bags off and come into the city.
That pretty much wraps up our little visit to Frankfurt. We spent maybe three or four hours just walking around and it was really nice to just see the city without much of an agenda.
I came here with quite low expectations to be perfectly honest. I had heard more or less this is just a financial hub but it ended up being quite charming here in Frankfurt and I'm definitely going to miss Germany. I've had a wonderful time traveling around the country.
We aren't having much luck with the weather today. It is really rainy here in Freiburg. It is Easter weekend but we are out an exploring and we want to show you the city. Let's go have a tour.
One of my first impressions of Freiburg is that it is such a great city to walk around in. That's all we've been doing so far. It's very picturesque. There are cobbled streets and it is also very historic.

Our journey begins in Koblenz. In around 1000 A.D. a castle was built on a knoll on the east bank of the Rhine and Castle Ehrenbreitstein gradually developed. Europe’s second largest fortress was given its appearance as we see it today, between 1817 and 1828. From the Middle Ages to the late eighteenth century, Koblenz was the residence of the powerful archbishops of Trier and in 1794 it was taken over by France and in 1815, by Prussia. Following the Rhine, our journey leads to Boppard where town houses, stately homes and churches form the romantic old town. After the invasion of the Alemanni, a city wall was built in order to protect what was a toll castle and today the town has developed into an attractive tourist destination surrounded by woods and vineyards. We pass by a high rock on a sharp bend where the Rhine is barely a hundred and thirteen metres wide. Legend tells of a beautiful mermaid, Loreley , who enchanted and distracted sailors with her singing in order that their boats would be destroyed on the rocks. Soon, the river becomes more tranquil. Slowly the craggy slopes change to vineyards and the river valley widens. Bacharach nestles in the confluence of the Steeger Valley, into the extensive Rhine Valley, protected by a sturdy wall. Above the town is the Stahleck Fortress that was first recorded in 1095 and became the residence of the Count Of Palatine On The Rhine, in 1142. The conclusion of our journey, Rüdesheim is a picturesque town that boasts more visitors than residents, its sunny location making it ideal for viticulture. A mediaeval church, wooden buildings and stately homes, and the famous Drosselgasse, characterise the city. The Middle Rhine Valley reflects the history of Europe. With cultural monuments and cultivated countryside, crowded settlements along narrow banks and various noble castles situated on rocky ledges, it is a reflection of the romantic history of times gone by.

The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is located in Germany and is the section of river between Koblenz and Rüdesheim. In around 1000 A.D. a castle was built on a knoll on the east bank of the Rhine, and Burg Ehrenbreitstein gradually developed.From the Middle Ages until the late eighteenth century Koblenz was the residence of the powerful archbishops of Trier. In 1794 the city was taken over by France and, in 1815, Prussia. We travel up the Rhine whose source is situated in the Swiss Alps and gradually makes it way to the North Sea. High up on the riverbank is the huge Germania which points the way to Rüdesheim in the midst of numerous vineyards. This picturesque city, which has more visitors than actual residents, was settled in prehistoric times. A mediaeval church, wooden buildings and stately homes, and the famous Drosselgasse, characterize the city. In a fine sun kissed location, its vineyards prospered as did the constant trade brought by the river. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is a thing of beauty!

The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is located in Germany and is the section of river between Koblenz and Rüdesheim. In around 1000 A.D. a castle was built on a knoll on the east bank of the Rhine, and Burg Ehrenbreitstein gradually developed.From the Middle Ages until the late eighteenth century Koblenz was the residence of the powerful archbishops of Trier. In 1794 the city was taken over by France and, in 1815, Prussia. We travel up the Rhine whose source is situated in the Swiss Alps and gradually makes it way to the North Sea. High up on the riverbank is the huge Germania which points the way to Rüdesheim in the midst of numerous vineyards. This picturesque city, which has more visitors than actual residents, was settled in prehistoric times. A mediaeval church, wooden buildings and stately homes, and the famous Drosselgasse, characterize the city. In a fine sun kissed location, its vineyards prospered as did the constant trade brought by the river. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is a thing of beauty!

It is known as The Balcony of Europe and is located ten metres above the banks of the River Elbe. Meissen is well known for the porcelain of the same name. In the Meissen factory each aspect of the manufacturing process can be observed, along with a presentation of the history of the famous porcelain. The centuries created such beauty that Dresden has been described as The Venice Of The East and Florence On The Elb. Sofia’s historic city centre features the most splendid sacred building in the Balkan Peninsula, the Aleksandâr Nevski Cathedral, a work of art of the Russian Orthodox religion that can accommodate a congregation of more than five thousand. Vidin is dominated by the Baba Vida Fortress whose impressive towers and bastion date back to the thirteenth century. From the banks of the Danube the north western entrances to the mediaeval realm were strictly controlled and the fortress protected it from invasion by ship. Varna is the biggest city on the Black Sea coast and is one of Europe’s oldest cities. The golden, shining domes of the impressive cathedral in the city centre are one of its main landmarks. The caves of western Rhodopes are the main destination for many of the region’s visitors, such as the Jagodina Cave that is ten kilometres long and extends up to five levels within the limestone mountains. It is the longest and deepest of the Rhodopes and its tunnels and huge galleries feature traces of prehistoric inhabitants. The Communists were however successful in staging a putsch in the Berlin municipal government, eventually leading to the divisions of both Berlin and Germany. Interviewees include Gail Halvorsen, Sir Freddie Laker and Clark Clifford.

It's known as the world's oldest profession, but with a number of 'megabrothels' due to open their doors across Germany, many are beginning to question the country's liberal attitude towards prostitution.
"What makes this place so interesting is that you can change", explains Peter, a satisfied customer of a luxury new 'sex supermarket ' on the outskirts of Stuttgart. "You can take at 5:00 a blonde one, and at 9:00 a black one - it doesn't get boring." And Peter is not alone. An estimated 1.5 million men visit prostitutes every day in Germany, whose permissive sex laws have earned it the title of 'Europe's Bordello'. "Prostitution has always been a social need", says Michael Beretin, marketing manager for the Paradise chain of new-age megabrothels. "We need to deal with it, and make it manageable." Legislation passed in 2002, motivated by a desire to improve conditions for sex workers by granting access to health insurance and social security, saw prostitution in Germany swell to a $21 billion-a-year industry. But concerns over trafficking are prompting some senior politicians to lobby for change. "Germany doesn't want to be the brothel of the world", declares Christian Democratic Union MP Sylvia Pantel. "We've become a great country for sex tourism and perversion." But what of the women in the windows? This report brings you the views of those at the heart of the matter.

Indeed, due to its geographical location, for many centuries Graz has been a melting pot of culture.The Schlossberg Mountain towers above the city and in 1894 a rack railway was introduced in order to overcome the severity of its 60 per cent gradient. The Romans and Celts once used the mountain as a place of ritual ceremony and today small pathways and pavilions make the mountain more accessible. In the 12th century a mediaeval castle was built on the plateau and in 1531 it was transformed into a mighty fortress that served as a defence against the Turks. With nearly 32,000 exhibits that date from the 15th to the 19th centuries the Zeughaus contains the largest collection of historic weaponry in the world. The often-extended Grazer Burg was once the residence of the Hapsburgs. One of its towers contains a unique double spiral Gothic staircase constructed of sandstone that shines out magnificently in a wonderful array of colour. The entire complex, along with each of its numerous building styles and adjoining park, is now the seat of Styria’s provincial government. Located on a hill to the north east there is another fine example of Baroque architecture, the Maria Trost Basilica. In the 17th century those who sought help and consolation climbed two hundred and fifteen steps to a Gothic Madonna who was thought to possess miraculous powers. Within the interior of the church and its colourful wall and ceiling mounted frescos, there are also various scenes of battle. Graz is a city in which the artistic and architectural styles of the German-speaking nations, the Balkans and the Mediterranean are united. It is a remarkable city of age old traditions, mediaeval flair and contemporary life.

Bereits um 2.200 v. Chr. wurde die Region besiedelt, später ließen sich hier die Kelten nieder. Einen ersten großen Aufschwung erlebte die Region, als die Römer die Nordgrenze entlang der Donau durch den Limes gesichert hatten.
Das heutige Lienz hat einen weit ausladenden Hauptplatz, auf dem man gemütlich vor Restaurants oder Eisdielen sitzen und das Treiben beobachten kann. Die einstige Liebburg aus dem 17. Jahrhundert wurde zum Rathaus umgebaut.
Den Abschluss des Platzes bildet das Antoniuskirchl, heute eine orthodoxe Kirche für die nach dem Krieg in Lienz verbliebenen Kosaken ist. Die Kosaken haben ein unwürdiges Schicksal erfahren, als sie nach dem Krieg, in dem sie auf deutscher Seite kämpften, trotz gegenteiliger Zusage, von den Briten an die Sowjets ausgeliefert wurden. Daraufhin fanden ungefähr 3.000 Menschen den Tod, viele zogen den Selbstmord vor. Säuglinge wurden von ihren Müttern in die reißende Drau geworfen, bevor die Mütter folgten. Fast alle Überlebenden wurden nach Sibirien deportiert. Ein kleiner Kosakenfriedhof erinnert an diese fürchterlichen Tage.
In der Kärntner Straße halten wir kurz vor Tirols ältestem bemalten Bildstock aus dem 14. Jahrhundert.

The region was populated as early as 2,200 BC, later the Celts settled here.
It experienced its first major upswing after the Romans had secured the northern border along the Danube by the Limes.
Today Lienz has a widely extending main square where you sit comfortably in front of restaurants or ice cream parlors and watch the hustle and bustle. The Liebburg, a former castle from the 17th century was converted to the Town Hall.
At the end of the square you see the Antoniuskirchl, now an Orthodox church for the Cossacks who remained in Lienz after the war. The Cossacks have experienced an unworthy fate. After the war in which they fought on the German side, despite promise the British handed them over to the Soviets.
Roughly 3,000 people were killed, many people prefered suicide. Infants were thrown by their mothers in the torrential river Drava before the mothers followed. Almost all survivors were deported to Siberia. A little Cossack cemetery reminds of these cruel days.
In the Carinthian road we stopped briefly in front of Tyrol's oldest wayside shrine from the 14th century.

Dresden is the capital city of the Free State of Saxony (Sachsen) in Germany. It is situated in a valley on the River Elbe, near the Czech border. The Dresden conurbation is part of the Saxon Triangle metropolitan area with 2.4 million inhabitants.
Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendour. The city was known as the Jewel Box, because of its baroque and rococo city center. A controversial Allied aerial bombing towards the end of World War II killed 25,000 civilians and destroyed the entire city center. The impact of the bombing and 40 years of urban development during the East German communist era have considerably changed the face of the city. Some restoration work has helped to reconstruct parts of the historic inner city, including the Katholische Hofkirche, the Semper Oper and the Dresdner Frauenkirche.
Since German reunification in 1990, Dresden has regained importance as one of the cultural, educational, political and economic centers of Germany and Europe. The Dresden University of Technology is one of the 10 largest universities in Germany and part of the German Universities Excellence Initiative.
