Train 1:
Train #649 is slightly late, having arrived on Track 3 as its load of evening commuters stream out into the town. As it departs, the "ridge" in Park Ridge's name is clearly visible- the tracks pass over this hump, below which is Touhy Avenue.
Train 2:
Cabcar #8456 leads 5 other bilevels on inbound train #656, arriving on Track 1. Pushing is F40PH-2 #171, the "Norwood Park" (a village which, incidentally, is two stops down the line from here). The signal past the station drops to red as train 656 occupies the next block. This train is unusual in that it is the only express that runs in the afternoon, operating from Barrington, skipping Palatine, then stopping at Arlington Park, then only stopping at Des Plaines, Park Ridge, Jefferson Park, Irving Park and Clybourn before arriving in downtown Chicago at the Ogilvie Transportation Center.
Train 3:
Led by F40PH-2 #172, the "Village of Berkeley" express train #653 blows through Park Ridge on its way to all stations between Mount Prospect and Harvard, the last station on the UP-NW line, with 9 bilevels. It runs on Track 2, the centre main, until it is north of Palatine, where the line narrows to two tracks. Then, it will make all station stops until Harvard.
Train 4:
Arriving on Track 1, the inbound local track, is train #658, with nine bilevels, most of them of the Amerail / Nippon-Sharyo variety. Two F40PH units power this train as it arrives from Crystal Lake, then departs toward Chicago. The second one is unidentifiable here, but the first is #168, the "Village of Maywood". After this run, no more trains depart Crystal Lake for Chicago for two hours, and the next departure from the end of the line at Harvard is not until 8:30pm- the last for the night.
Park Ridge is also an important inner-suburban transfer point for Pace and CTA buses. Here, an Eldorado-built 30' bus on route 290-Touhy Ave crosses the Metra/UP-NW tracks while an Orion VI bus running route 209-Park Ridge/Des Plaines heads north.
Train 5:
On track 3, train #655 arrives with F40PH #145 pulling 7 bilevels. This is, technically, the last outbound train of the evening rush- after this, there is a one-hour gap where no trains depart Chicago until about 7:30pm.

Back before the Pace Bus System came into being in the Chicago area suburbs, there were a number of private city bus systems that existed. One of these transit companies familiar to those living in the northwestern and northern suburbs such as Park Ridge, Des Plaines and Skokie was United Motor Coach. Here are a number of shots, filmed on 8 mm in 1975, of United Motor Coach's yellow over blue 1950's General Motors buses that at this time were being operated by the transit agency, Nortran.
First we start with a shot of a bus turning from Thorndale, in Park Ridge, northbound onto the Chicago side of Canfield Ave. The next shot is an interior shot as the bus travels westward on Higgins Rd in Park Ridge just west of Canfield. Finally we end up with United Motor Coach's buses bringing students to Maine South high school in Park Ridge (yes, that's right, the same Maine South HS former First Lady, Hillary Clinton graduated from!). Note the advertising billboards on the buses such as Carlton Cigarettes on the broad side and it seems just about every United Motor Coach bus at this time in the mid 1970's advertised Bay's English Muffins on the backside.
Those of us who rode these buses in the 1950's, 60's and 70's, whether to school or as city transit, will recall the dark brown vinyl seats, the roar of the rear mounted GM diesel engine (and that faint smell of burnt diesel fumes, especially from riding the rearward seats...not to mention the cigarette smoke odor from those same high school students who'd routinely "light up" in the back), the little kick you'd feel and hear from the buses' GM Hydra-Matic transmission shifting gears, the gasps of air from the air brakes being applied and released and the overall solid construction of these buses....in fact, almost too solid, as they had a somewhat rough ride as you'd traverse over things like bumps on the road and railroad tracks.

Park Ridge, Illinois
Park Ridge is a Chicago suburb with a population at the 2010 census of 37,480 residents. It is located 15 miles (24 km) northwest of downtown Chicago. It is close to O'Hare International Airport, major expressways, and rail transportation. It is a part of the Chicago metropolitan area, bordering two northwestern neighborhoods of Chicago's Far North Side (Edison Park and Norwood Park).
As its name suggests, Park Ridge lies on a ridge. The soil is abundant with clay deposits, which made it a brick-making center for the developing city of Chicago. Park Ridge was originally called Pennyville to honor George Penny, the businessman who owned the local brickyard along with Robert Meacham. Later it was named Brickton. The Des Plaines River divides Park Ridge from neighboring Des Plaines, which is west of Park Ridge. Chicago is south and east of Park Ridge, and Niles and unincorporated Maine Township are to its north.
Park Ridge is the hometown of former First Lady and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. When she visited Park Ridge on the occasion of her 50th birthday in 1997, the city renamed the southeast corner of the intersection of Elm and Wisner streets, next to her girlhood home, "Rodham Corner". Park Ridge is also the hometown of movie stars Carrie Snodgrass and Harrison Ford. All three attended Maine Township High School East. Mrs. Clinton, the youngest of the three, spent her senior year at Maine Township High School South, a new school built to accommodate the population of baby boomers coming through at the time.

Train 2:
Cabcar #8456 leads 5 other bilevels on inbound train #656, arriving on Track 1. Pushing is F40PH-2 #171, the "Norwood Park" (a village which, incidentally, is two stops down the line from here). The signal past the station drops to red as train 656 occupies the next block. This train is unusual in that it is the only express that runs in the afternoon, operating from Barrington, skipping Palatine, then stopping at Arlington Park, then only stopping at Des Plaines, Park Ridge, Jefferson Park, Irving Park and Clybourn before arriving in downtown Chicago at the Ogilvie Transportation Center.

Back before the Pace Bus System came into being in the Chicago area suburbs, there were a number of private city bus systems that existed. One of these transit companies familiar to those living in the northwestern and northern suburbs such as Park Ridge, Des Plaines and Skokie was United Motor Coach. Here are a number of shots, filmed on 8 mm in 1975, of United Motor Coach's yellow over blue 1950's General Motors buses that at this time were being operated by the transit agency, Nortran.
First we start with a shot of a bus turning from Thorndale, in Park Ridge, northbound onto the Chicago side of Canfield Ave. The next shot is an interior shot as the bus travels westward on Higgins Rd in Park Ridge just west of Canfield. Finally we end up with United Motor Coach's buses bringing students to Maine South high school in Park Ridge (yes, that's right, the same Maine South HS former First Lady, Hillary Clinton graduated from!). Note the advertising billboards on the buses such as Carlton Cigarettes on the broad side and it seems just about every United Motor Coach bus at this time in the mid 1970's advertised Bay's English Muffins on the backside.
Those of us who rode these buses in the 1950's, 60's and 70's, whether to school or as city transit, will recall the dark brown vinyl seats, the roar of the rear mounted GM diesel engine (and that faint smell of burnt diesel fumes, especially from riding the rearward seats...not to mention the cigarette smoke odor from those same high school students who'd routinely "light up" in the back), the little kick you'd feel and hear from the buses' GM Hydra-Matic transmission shifting gears, the gasps of air from the air brakes being applied and released and the overall solid construction of these buses....in fact, almost too solid, as they had a somewhat rough ride as you'd traverse over things like bumps on the road and railroad tracks.

Archeologists are hailing the discovery of an ancient temple built to a pre-Hispanic god of wind in the Tlatelolca neighborhood of what is now Mexico City, IFL Science reported Friday.According to the report, a supermarket was constructed on top of the temple in the middle of the 20th century.
