Some insight into what an audition at Guildhall drama school is like!
Patsy Rodenburg, Head of Voice at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (and formerly Head of Voice at the National Theatre), is internationally renowned as an expert on verse speaking, so her classes on Shakespeare are a particular highlight of the voice programme at the Guildhall School. She challenges her students to be specific, to be realistic rather than falsifying or pushing emotions, and to engage fully with the heightened emotional situations in which Shakespeare's characters frequently find themselves. Her classes are a mix of erudite general knowledge and specific textual reference and analysis which provide revelation after revelation for the participants in the classes. According to one student 'she really gets to the raw emotion and then puts the intellectualism on top of it ... Patsy is brilliant at being able to distill the situation and then build it up'.
Patsy is also one of the two leading practitioners on the School's two-year MA in Training Actors programme, aimed at individuals who are committed to training a new generation of young people in theatre-making.

The imagination is a muscle; perhaps the most important muscle in the body. Ken Rea's legendary acting classes at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama are designed to train and expand that muscle of the imagination. Although a lot of the exercises might seem wildly over-the-top, Ken stresses 'we must always be truthful. As an audience we must never see the exercise, we must never be aware of your technique. You learn your technique in order to make that invisible'. Ken also has a gift for empowering students to feel that they can create their own work. Other faculty members also teach acting; Wyn Jones teaches a technique called 'Look, Move, Speak', while Martin Connor takes students through the work of Stanislavsky and Meisner. A large part of learning about acting also takes place during various acting projects in the first and second years, and during the full-scale productions in the third year.

Nikesh Patel (a student on the BA Acting course at the Guildhall School) takes fellow students Kai West (postgraduate double bass) and Kate Hall (BA Technical Theatre Arts) on a tour of some of the rooms in the school used by actors.
The first two years of the acting course concentrate on developing skills in movement, voice and various different approaches to acting. A lot of this work takes place in classrooms (where Nikesh shows us a film acting class in progress) or in the Gymnasium In the third year, the rehearsal room becomes increasingly important as the focus moves onto a succession of fully-staged performances either in the Silk Street Theatre, or external venues such as the Pit or the Bridewell Theatre.

Sundial Court is the student hall of residence for the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. It's situated only a few minutes walk from the School's main building on Silk Street, making it ideal for students wanting to immerse themselves in the busy life of the School. Self-contained flats provide a homely environment, yet one that is also close to the School's thriving Student Union bar in Sundial Court basement. It's also a stone's throw away from a supermarket for everyday shopping needs, and close to two tube stations for access to everything else that London has to offer.

Guildhall Summer Schools are led by many of the same tutors who teach our degree and masters students throughout the academic year and we offer a range of courses in music, drama and technical theatre for people of all ages and abilities. They last anywhere from a few days up to three weeks, and take place during July and August each year – with residential options (subject to availability).

A guildhall, or guild hall, is a building historically used by guilds for meetings and other purposes. It is also the official or colloquial name for many of these specific buildings, now often used as town halls or museums.
The Low Countries used to have guildhalls in every city, often one gildenhuis (Dutch, literally "guild house") for each trade. They were often elaborate, ornate buildings, demonstrating the guild's status. Occasionally a single hall would be used by all the city's guilds.
The guildhall was used as the offices of the deken (deacon) and other guild officers, and for meetings by the overlieden (board of directors). The guild members would occasionally be called to the guildhall for meetings on important matters.
In Amsterdam, every guildhall had its gildeknecht (guild servant), often the guild's youngest member, and was guarded by a gildehond (guild dog). Every evening, the guild brothers gathered in the tavern room of the guildhall to discuss the events of the day while the gildeknecht served beer. Once a year, the guildmen would gather in the guildhall for a communal meal.

Nikesh Patel (a student on the BA Acting course at the Guildhall School) takes fellow students Kai West (postgraduate double bass) and Kate Hall (BA Technical Theatre Arts) on a tour of some of the rooms in the school used by actors.
The first two years of the acting course concentrate on developing skills in movement, voice and various different approaches to acting. A lot of this work takes place in classrooms (where Nikesh shows us a film acting class in progress) or in the Gymnasium In the third year, the rehearsal room becomes increasingly important as the focus moves onto a succession of fully-staged performances either in the Silk Street Theatre, or external venues such as the Pit or the Bridewell Theatre.
