On 6-30-2011 after several days of consulting with Raytheon, NAVAIR, NMNA, and the A-3 Association.
It was agreed to fly the jet to Pensacola for display. The A-3 Association deposited $15K with Raytheon and on the 29th, Ron Woltman and crew departed Van Nuys at 1945 CST arriving NAS Fort Worth at ~2215.
We (A-3 Assoc) met Ron and crew at the aircraft and transported them to the hotel. Early the next morning we readied the jet for it's last flight and Ron and his crew took off for the last time at 9:10 CST Fort Worth, TX for Pensacola, FL.
We'll miss the sound of those J-57's and we will miss the A-3 Skywarrior. Remember all that we have 20 of these in museums so please donate to the A-3 Association so we can keep them all as good looking as how Raytheon kept this one.

The Douglas A-3 Skywarrior was a strategic bomber built for the United States Navy and among the longest serving carrier-based jet aircraft. It entered service in the mid-1950s and was retired in 1991. For many years after its introduction, it was also the heaviest aircraft ever flown from an aircraft carrier, earning it the unofficial nickname "The Whale". Its primary function for much of its later service life was as an electronic warfare platform, tactical air reconnaissance platform, and high capacity aerial refueling tanker.
A modified derivative also served in the U.S. Air Force until the early 1970s as the B-66 Destroyer. The Skywarrior is the only Navy attack aircraft intended as a strategic bomber to enter service. The Martin P6M SeaMaster tested well, but never entered service due to the Navy fearing loss of funding for surface ships and submarines if it encroached on the USAF strategic bomber role. The pending elimination of the flying-boat platform from the United States Navy also entered into the decision regarding the P6M. Later aircraft, like the carrier-based supersonic A-5 Vigilante, were also originally designed for strategic nuclear strike missions. However, with the removal of aircraft carriers from the SIOP and the transfer of the Navy's strategic nuclear deterrence mission to the Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) submarine force, the Vigilante also saw its mission changed, in its case to tactical air reconnaissance.

A partial film of the tragic Navy Day crash in 1964. The event occurred at 1:19 p.m. following the 25,000th live jump at the Naval Aerospace Recovery Facility, a tenant command of the base. The A3A clipped a power pole and impacted the exchange complex.

Fly-in of final flight of Douglas A-3 Skywarrior aircraft BUNO 144825 landing at NAS Whidbey Island, WA on April 29, 2011. This aircraft is to become both a static display also is to be dedicated as a memorial to the 251 people who perished while serving their country and operating the A-3 Skywarrior - the "Whale". The memorial and static display is to be located on the corner of Ault Field Road and Langley Boulevard in Oak Harbor, WA. Credit goes to many people for getting this aircraft here, including especially the A-3 Skywarrior Memorial Association. Also, thanks to the very talented local videographer who created this video.

A partial film of the tragic Navy Day crash in 1964. The event occurred at 1:19 p.m. following the 25,000th live jump at the Naval Aerospace Recovery Facility, a tenant command of the base. The A3A clipped a power pole and impacted the exchange complex.

Fly-in of final flight of Douglas A-3 Skywarrior aircraft BUNO 144825 landing at NAS Whidbey Island, WA on April 29, 2011. This aircraft is to become both a static display also is to be dedicated as a memorial to the 251 people who perished while serving their country and operating the A-3 Skywarrior - the "Whale". The memorial and static display is to be located on the corner of Ault Field Road and Langley Boulevard in Oak Harbor, WA. Credit goes to many people for getting this aircraft here, including especially the A-3 Skywarrior Memorial Association. Also, thanks to the very talented local videographer who created this video.

Douglas A-3 Skywarrior was designed as a strategic bomber for the United States Navy and was among the longest serving carrier-based aircraft in history. It entered service in the mid-1950s and was retired in 1991. Throughout its service, it was the heaviest operational aircraft to operate from aircraft carriers, earning its nickname, "The Whale." Its primary function for much of its later service life was as an electronic warfare platform, tactical air reconnaissance platform, and high capacity aerial refueling tanker.
No ejection seats for the 3 crew members gave the Douglas A3D Skywarrior the Nick name "All 3 Dead".
