In this lively debate from March 22, 2016, Institute experts Soner Cagaptay, David Pollock, James Jeffrey, and Andrew Tabler discuss the U.S. relationship with the Syrian Kurds against the background of U.S.-Turkish relations. While Washington sees the Democratic Union Party (PYD) as a tactical ally in the fight against Islamic State forces in Syria, Ankara sees it as a terrorist group linked to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which the Turkish government is once again fighting at home. Given that the Turks are a crucial ally in the campaign against the Islamic State, where is U.S. policy on the Syrian Kurds headed, and what approach should Washington take going forward? Soner Cagaptay is the Beyer Family Fellow and director of the Turkish Research Program at the Institute, and author...
