The second largest of the Channel Islands, just 22 miles from California's coast, Catalina makes a great family weekend.
Our kids had a blast on the hour-long ferry from Dana Point to the island, where we spotted sailboats, kayakers, and a pod of frolicking dolphins.
Once you disembark in Avalon Bay, grab a golf cart for a tour around the island, and then take a stroll along Crescent Drive, Catalina's main boardwalk, and check out the Catalina Casino (Avalon Casino).
Here, kids can enjoy a treat of spun taffy, ice cream or caramel apples at the old-fashioned confectionary Lloyds of Avalon — — or enjoy a few video games and skee ball at the Metropole Marketplace arcade.
A trip to the island isn't complete without a stroll along the Green Pleasure Pier, where you can grab some fish and chips at Eric's restaurant and then go for a cruise on the bay.
The Undersea Tour aboard the Starlight and Emerald semi-submersible vessels is a must-see.
During the voyage, you'll explore the clear waters of Lover's Cove and a protected kelp forest where you'll come face to face with bright orange garibaldi, spotted calico bass, and opaleyes — among many other types of marine life. The 45-minute tour is also offered at night.
To explore Catalina's rugged interior and native wildlife, hop aboard the Classic Inland Motor Tour, which follows the 1800s stagecoach route. In Middle Ranch, you'll meet Tachi, an endangered Santa Catalina Island Fox who acts as an educational ambassador for her species. You'll also see a herd of wandering bison, native woodpeckers, and perhaps a bald eagle or two.
At El Rancho Escondido, the Wrigley family's Hidden Ranch, you can enjoy an Arabian horse demonstration and then spend about 45 minutes walking through the ranch. Pet the horses in their stables, play with a wandering kitty, or watch a short film on the ranch's history. A small museum displays Bohlin saddles, carriages and family memorabilia.
After your tour, the Golf Gardens are just steps away. Known as one of the world's most challenging and beautiful miniature golf courses, the lushly landscaped grounds offer 18 holes of family fun.

Home to the famous Balboa Bar and Balboa Fun Zone, Balboa is a great place for a California holiday or day trip.
The Balboa Fun Zone coastal amusement park, located in Newport Beach, is one of Southern California's oldest, dating back to 1936.
On During your Balboa Island vacation, you'll find a ton of things to do, from a great Ferris wheel and festive merry-go-round to the Kids at Heart bungee jumper. In the Bay Arcade, you can play a round of air hockey or skee ball.
For some great salt-water taffy, try the nostalgic Balboa Candy, or grab a gooey slice of New York pizza at Pizza Pete's, a favorite hangout since 1946.
Balboa Pavilion dates back to 1906. Today, it's a popular marine recreation center.
This is the place to pick up a whale watching cruise, go on a sportfishing tour from Davey's Locker, or take a morning ride to Catalina Island aboard the Catalina Flyer. Tours depart daily at 9 a.m. and return to Balboa Pavilion at 5:45 p.m.
The Fun Zone Boat Company offers hourly celebrity home tours through Newport Bay, or you can charter your own little duffy boat through Balboa Boat Rentals.
Balboa Pier is home to the very first Ruby's Diner, which opened in 1982. This is a great spot to chow down on crisp fish and chips or kobe beef sliders while enjoying gorgeous views of the Pacific. Of course, the milk shakes are great too!
Balboa Island, accessible by ferry from Balboa Peninsula or across the bridge from PCH near Newport Beach Fashion Island, is a quaint seaside community filled with dozens of fun boutiques.
While you're in town, take the time to sample some Balboa Island restaurants along Marine Avenue. A few good recommendations include Amelia's Ristorante, Wilma's Patio and The Village Inn. To pack your own lunch, visit Hershey's Market — a staple since 1929.
But its main claim to fame is the Balboa bar and frozen chocolate banana, invented around 1945. Practically every little snack shop sells these cool confections, but one of the most renowned is Sugar & Spice, which has the autographs of "The OC" cast members posted on its window.

Catalina Island, located off the coast of California, is home to 22 Catalina Island hotels, four bed and breakfast inns and dozens of vacation home rentals, including some in the chic Hamilton Cove district, which has some of the most expensive Catalina Island Real Estate.
But if you want to stay in Catalina Island lodging that's just steps from the beach with an ocean view, there are four hotels you shouldn't miss. All are located along Crescent Drive on Catalina's boardwalk.
If you want to stay in a beachfront spot that's easy on the budget, check out the Santa Catalina Island company's Pavilion Lodge, a midcentury remodel that boasts a nice grassy courtyard and free continental breakfast every morning.
They can also offer special packages that include Catalina Island tours through the Middle Ranch or the Catalina Island Casino.
Looking for pet friendly hotels? Head to the Edgewater Hotel where you and your dog can stay in one of eight spacious suites. You can create your own packages here with boat rentals and perhaps a tour.
Couples in the know stay at the gorgeous Hotel Villa Portofino, which boasts an awesome Italian restaurant, flowered courtyards, in-room fireplaces, refrigerators, complimentary Continental breakfast and beach chairs and towels.
Another standout for any Catalina Island vacation is the stylish Hotel Metropole, an oceanfront retreat with its own shopping mall and arcade. The rooms here have jacuzzi tubs, fireplaces, and balconies overlooking the gorgeous Catalina Coast.

There’s much to do and see in Catalina. The options are everywhere the minute you step on the pier. A quick stop at a ticket booth is usually all it takes to start an adventure. But if you are more interested in a relaxing stroll or a bite to eat, there are lots of great little restaurants, shops and even a supermarket. You can hop on the trolley for a quick tour of the island, or even indulge the kids at the fun zone. But let’s get started with our list. First up;
1. Scuba: Catalina offers a terrific diving experience with clear clean water.
2. Next up; Zipline! You gotta try this. The Zip Line Eco tour is just awesome. It’s about two hours of exhilarating fun and breathtaking views.
3. For some under water thrills try one of the many submarine adventures, Or for less of a submersed commitment rent a kayak.
4. Parasailing. For us, it never gets old. Be aware though, it can get a bit chilly some days.
5. And our personal favorite – Rent a Golf cart. The good ‘ol Catalina Limo is a fun way to see the island on your own. If you’ve got young kids that are a few years away from some of the other activities on our list, then this is the way to go. This can also be a great way to get to the Catalina Casino to check out some island art and the history museum. From there you’re just a short distance from beautiful Descanso Beach.

Veronica Hill explores the attractions of Long Beach in this episode of "California Travel Tips." Located 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, on the border of Orange County, Long Beach makes a great day trip or long weekend. It's LA's second largest city — home to the historic Queen Mary, dozens of hip art galleries, and one of California's best aquariums, Aquarium of the Pacific.
Most Long Beach restaurants and shops are found at Shoreline Village. You can check out Wyland's famous Planet Ocean mural at Long Beach Sports Arena, or head to The Pike for a spin on the Ferris wheel. The 3-mile Long Beach Bike Path travels along the waterfront from Shoreline Village to Belmont Shore.
Several fun Long Beach events are held throughout the year, including the popular Long Beach Grand Prix (http://www.lbgp.com) in April, and Comic and Horror Con, held twice yearly at Long Beach Convention Center.
One of the city's signature attractions is the RMS Queen Mary ship, which has been docked here since 1967. Sailing the Atlantic between 1936 and 1967, it was one of the most luxurious ocean liners of its time. Roughly twice the size of Titanic, the Queen Mary weighs over 81,000 tons and stretches more than 1,000 feet. Check out the Upper Deck, which offers great views of Downtown Long Beach, then enjoy a cocktail in the Observation Bar, which was once the First Class Lounge. For a fun evening on ship, enjoy dinner in Sir Winston's, followed by a ghost tour with paranormal expert Erika Frost.
The Aquarium of the Pacific is another good bet — filled with one of California's most impressive collections of Pacific Ocean sea life. More than a million gallons of sea water were barged in from Catalina Island to create this underwater sanctuary, which is divided into three major regions. The Southern California/Baja Gallery is home to playful seals, skates and rays, while the Northern Pacific Gallery showcases sub-arctic critters like horned puffins, sea otters and Japanese spider crabs. One of the most impressive galleries is the Tropical Pacific region, where a three-story tall predator tank provides a glimpse of barracudas, giant black sea bass and leopard sharks. In Shark Lagoon, you can pet bamboo, zebra and epaulette sharks in a shallow pool, then feed the birds in Lorikeet Forest.
Dozens of Long Beach cruises and whale watching trips are offered throughout the day, along with daily jaunts to Catalina Island. Around sunset, head south to Naples, where you can enjoy a romantic gondola ride through the canals with Long Beach Gondola Getaway.

It is the most populous U.S. state, with 39 million people, and the third largest state by area (after Alaska and Texas). California is bordered by Oregon to the north, Nevada to the east, Arizona to the southeast, and the Mexican state of Baja California to the south. It contains the nation's second most populous census statistical area (Greater Los Angeles Area) and the fifth most populous (San Francisco Bay Area), and eight of the nation's 50 most populated cities (Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Sacramento, Long Beach, and Oakland). Sacramento has been the state capital since 1854.
What is now California was first settled by various Native American tribes before being explored by a number of European expeditions during the 16th and 17th centuries. It was then claimed by the Spanish Empire as part of Alta California in the larger territory of New Spain. Alta California became a part of Mexico in 1821 following its successful war for independence, but was ceded to the United States in 1848 after the Mexican–American War. The western portion of Alta California was organized as the State of California, which was admitted as the 31st state on September 9, 1850. The California Gold Rush starting in 1848 led to dramatic social and demographic change, with large-scale immigration from the east and abroad with an accompanying economic boom.

Island
An island /ˈaɪlənd/ or isle /ˈaɪl/ is any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water. Very small islands such as emergent land features on atolls can be called islets, skerries, cays or keys. An island in a river or a lake island may be called an eyot or ait, or a holm. A grouping of geographically or geologically related islands is called an archipelago, e.g. the Philippines.
An island may be described as such despite the presence of an artificial land bridge, for example Singapore and its causeway, or the various Dutch delta islands, such as IJsselmonde. Some places may even retain "island" in their names for historical reasons after being connected to a larger landmass by a wide land bridge, such as Coney Island or Coronado Island. Conversely, when a piece of land is separated from the mainland by a man-made canal, for example the Peloponnese by the Corinth Canal, it is generally not considered an island.
There are two main types of islands: continental islands and oceanic islands. There are also artificial islands.

The Balboa Fun Zone coastal amusement park, located in Newport Beach, is one of Southern California's oldest, dating back to 1936. On During your Balboa Island vacation, you'll find a ton of things to do, from a great Ferris wheel and festive merry-go-round to the Kids at Heart bungee jumper. In the Bay Arcade, you can play a round of air hockey or skee ball. For some great salt-water taffy, try the nostalgic Balboa Candy, or grab a gooey slice of New York pizza at Pizza Pete's, a favorite hangout since 1946. Balboa Pavilion dates back to 1906. Today, it's a popular marine recreation center. This is the place to pick up a whale watching cruise, go on a sportfishing tour from Davey's Locker, or take a morning ride to Catalina Island aboard the Catalina Flyer. Tours depart daily at 9 a.m. and return to Balboa Pavilion at 5:45 p.m. The Fun Zone Boat Company offers hourly celebrity home tours through Newport Bay, or you can charter your own little duffy boat through Balboa Boat Rentals. Balboa Pier is home to the very first Ruby's Diner, which opened in 1982. This is a great spot to chow down on crisp fish and chips or kobe beef sliders while enjoying gorgeous views of the Pacific. Of course, the milk shakes are great too! Balboa Island, accessible by ferry from Balboa Peninsula or across the bridge from PCH near Newport Beach Fashion Island, is a quaint seaside community filled with dozens of fun boutiques. While you're in town, take the time to sample some Balboa Island restaurants along Marine Avenue. A few good recommendations include Amelia's Ristorante, Wilma's Patio and The Village Inn. To pack your own lunch, visit Hershey's Market — a staple since 1929. But its main claim to fame is the Balboa bar and frozen chocolate banana, invented around 1945. Practically every little snack shop sells these cool confections, but one of the most renowned is Sugar & Spice, which has the autographs of "The OC" cast members posted on its window. The options are everywhere the minute you step on the pier. A quick stop at a ticket booth is usually all it takes to start an adventure. But if you are more interested in a relaxing stroll or a bite to eat, there are lots of great little restaurants, shops and even a supermarket. You can hop on the trolley for a quick tour of the island, or even indulge the kids at the fun zone. But let’s get started with our list. First up; 1. Scuba: Catalina offers a terrific diving experience with clear clean water. 2. Next up; Zipline! You gotta try this. The Zip Line Eco tour is just awesome. It’s about two hours of exhilarating fun and breathtaking views. 3. For some under water thrills try one of the many submarine adventures, Or for less of a submersed commitment rent a kayak. 4. Parasailing. For us, it never gets old. Be aware though, it can get a bit chilly some days. 5. And our personal favorite – Rent a Golf cart. The good ‘ol Catalina Limo is a fun way to see the island on your own. If you’ve got young kids that are a few years away from some of the other activities on our list, then this is the way to go. This can also be a great way to get to the Catalina Casino to check out some island art and the history museum. From there you’re just a short distance from beautiful Descanso Beach. Located 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, on the border of Orange County, Long Beach makes a great day trip or long weekend. It's LA's second largest city — home to the historic Queen Mary, dozens of hip art galleries, and one of California's best aquariums, Aquarium of the Pacific. Most Long Beach restaurants and shops are found at Shoreline Village. You can check out Wyland's famous Planet Ocean mural at Long Beach Sports Arena, or head to The Pike for a spin on the Ferris wheel. The 3-mile Long Beach Bike Path travels along the waterfront from Shoreline Village to Belmont Shore. Several fun Long Beach events are held throughout the year, including the popular Long Beach Grand Prix (http://www.lbgp.com) in April, and Comic and Horror Con, held twice yearly at Long Beach Convention Center. One of the city's signature attractions is the RMS Queen Mary ship, which has been docked here since 1967. Sailing the Atlantic between 1936 and 1967, it was one of the most luxurious ocean liners of its time. Roughly twice the size of Titanic, the Queen Mary weighs over 81,000 tons and stretches more than 1,000 feet. Check out the Upper Deck, which offers great views of Downtown Long Beach, then enjoy a cocktail in the Observation Bar, which was once the First Class Lounge. For a fun evening on ship, enjoy dinner in Sir Winston's, followed by a ghost tour with paranormal expert Erika Frost. The Aquarium of the Pacific is another good bet — filled with one of California's most impressive collections of Pacific Ocean sea life. More than a million gallons of sea water were barged in from Catalina Island to create this underwater sanctuary, which is divided into three major regions. The Southern California/Baja Gallery is home to playful seals, skates and rays, while the Northern Pacific Gallery showcases sub-arctic critters like horned puffins, sea otters and Japanese spider crabs. One of the most impressive galleries is the Tropical Pacific region, where a three-story tall predator tank provides a glimpse of barracudas, giant black sea bass and leopard sharks. In Shark Lagoon, you can pet bamboo, zebra and epaulette sharks in a shallow pool, then feed the birds in Lorikeet Forest. Dozens of Long Beach cruises and whale watching trips are offered throughout the day, along with daily jaunts to Catalina Island. Around sunset, head south to Naples, where you can enjoy a romantic gondola ride through the canals with Long Beach Gondola Getaway. The second largest of the Channel Islands, just 22 miles from California's coast, Catalina makes a great family weekend.
Our kids had a blast on the hour-long ferry from Dana Point to the island, where we spotted sailboats, kayakers, and a pod of frolicking dolphins.
Once you disembark in Avalon Bay, grab a golf cart for a tour around the island, and then take a stroll along Crescent Drive, Catalina's main boardwalk, and check out the Catalina Casino (Avalon Casino).
Here, kids can enjoy a treat of spun taffy, ice cream or caramel apples at the old-fashioned confectionary Lloyds of Avalon — — or enjoy a few video games and skee ball at the Metropole Marketplace arcade.
A trip to the island isn't complete without a stroll along the Green Pleasure Pier, where you can grab some fish and chips at Eric's restaurant and then go for a cruise on the bay.
The Undersea Tour aboard the Starlight and Emerald semi-submersible vessels is a must-see.
During the voyage, you'll explore the clear waters of Lover's Cove and a protected kelp forest where you'll come face to face with bright orange garibaldi, spotted calico bass, and opaleyes — among many other types of marine life. The 45-minute tour is also offered at night.
To explore Catalina's rugged interior and native wildlife, hop aboard the Classic Inland Motor Tour, which follows the 1800s stagecoach route. In Middle Ranch, you'll meet Tachi, an endangered Santa Catalina Island Fox who acts as an educational ambassador for her species. You'll also see a herd of wandering bison, native woodpeckers, and perhaps a bald eagle or two.
At El Rancho Escondido, the Wrigley family's Hidden Ranch, you can enjoy an Arabian horse demonstration and then spend about 45 minutes walking through the ranch. Pet the horses in their stables, play with a wandering kitty, or watch a short film on the ranch's history. A small museum displays Bohlin saddles, carriages and family memorabilia.
After your tour, the Golf Gardens are just steps away. Known as one of the world's most challenging and beautiful miniature golf courses, the lushly landscaped grounds offer 18 holes of family fun.

This is the place to pick up a whale watching cruise, go on a sportfishing tour from Davey's Locker, or take a morning ride to Catalina Island aboard the Catalina Flyer. Tours depart daily at 9 a.m. and return to Balboa Pavilion at 5:45 p.m.
The Fun Zone Boat Company offers hourly celebrity home tours through Newport Bay, or you can charter your own little duffy boat through Balboa Boat Rentals.
Balboa Pier is home to the very first Ruby's Diner, which opened in 1982. This is a great spot to chow down on crisp fish and chips or kobe beef sliders while enjoying gorgeous views of the Pacific. Of course, the milk shakes are great too!
Balboa Island, accessible by ferry from Balboa Peninsula or across the bridge from PCH near Newport Beach Fashion Island, is a quaint seaside community filled with dozens of fun boutiques.

Catalina Island, located off the coast of California, is home to 22 Catalina Island hotels, four bed and breakfast inns and dozens of vacation home rentals, including some in the chic Hamilton Cove district, which has some of the most expensive Catalina Island Real Estate.
But if you want to stay in Catalina Island lodging that's just steps from the beach with an ocean view, there are four hotels you shouldn't miss. All are located along Crescent Drive on Catalina's boardwalk.
If you want to stay in a beachfront spot that's easy on the budget, check out the Santa Catalina Island company's Pavilion Lodge, a midcentury remodel that boasts a nice grassy courtyard and free continental breakfast every morning.
They can also offer special packages that include Catalina Island tours through the Middle Ranch or the Catalina Island Casino.
Looking for pet friendly hotels? Head to the Edgewater Hotel where you and your dog can stay in one of eight spacious suites. You can create your own packages here with boat rentals and perhaps a tour.

There’s much to do and see in Catalina. The options are everywhere the minute you step on the pier. A quick stop at a ticket booth is usually all it takes to start an adventure. But if you are more interested in a relaxing stroll or a bite to eat, there are lots of great little restaurants, shops and even a supermarket. You can hop on the trolley for a quick tour of the island, or even indulge the kids at the fun zone. But let’s get started with our list. First up;
1. Scuba: Catalina offers a terrific diving experience with clear clean water.
2. Next up; Zipline! You gotta try this. The Zip Line Eco tour is just awesome. It’s about two hours of exhilarating fun and breathtaking views.
3. For some under water thrills try one of the many submarine adventures, Or for less of a submersed commitment rent a kayak.
4. Parasailing. For us, it never gets old. Be aware though, it can get a bit chilly some days.
5. And our personal favorite – Rent a Golf cart. The good ‘ol Catalina Limo is a fun way to see the island on your own. If you’ve got young kids that are a few years away from some of the other activities on our list, then this is the way to go. This can also be a great way to get to the Catalina Casino to check out some island art and the history museum. From there you’re just a short distance from beautiful Descanso Beach.
That’s our list, but your list is up to you. hop off the ship and check out Catalina..

Veronica Hill explores the attractions of Long Beach in this episode of "California Travel Tips." Located 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, on the border of Orange County, Long Beach makes a great day trip or long weekend. It's LA's second largest city — home to the historic Queen Mary, dozens of hip art galleries, and one of California's best aquariums, Aquarium of the Pacific.
Most Long Beach restaurants and shops are found at Shoreline Village. You can check out Wyland's famous Planet Ocean mural at Long Beach Sports Arena, or head to The Pike for a spin on the Ferris wheel. The 3-mile Long Beach Bike Path travels along the waterfront from Shoreline Village to Belmont Shore.
Several fun Long Beach events are held throughout the year, including the popular Long Beach Grand Prix (http://www.lbgp.com) in April, and Comic and Horror Con, held twice yearly at Long Beach Convention Center.
One of the city's signature attractions is the RMS Queen Mary ship, which has been docked here since 1967. Sailing the Atlantic between 1936 and 1967, it was one of the most luxurious ocean liners of its time. Roughly twice the size of Titanic, the Queen Mary weighs over 81,000 tons and stretches more than 1,000 feet. Check out the Upper Deck, which offers great views of Downtown Long Beach, then enjoy a cocktail in the Observation Bar, which was once the First Class Lounge. For a fun evening on ship, enjoy dinner in Sir Winston's, followed by a ghost tour with paranormal expert Erika Frost.
The Aquarium of the Pacific is another good bet — filled with one of California's most impressive collections of Pacific Ocean sea life. More than a million gallons of sea water were barged in from Catalina Island to create this underwater sanctuary, which is divided into three major regions. The Southern California/Baja Gallery is home to playful seals, skates and rays, while the Northern Pacific Gallery showcases sub-arctic critters like horned puffins, sea otters and Japanese spider crabs. One of the most impressive galleries is the Tropical Pacific region, where a three-story tall predator tank provides a glimpse of barracudas, giant black sea bass and leopard sharks. In Shark Lagoon, you can pet bamboo, zebra and epaulette sharks in a shallow pool, then feed the birds in Lorikeet Forest.
Dozens of Long Beach cruises and whale watching trips are offered throughout the day, along with daily jaunts to Catalina Island. Around sunset, head south to Naples, where you can enjoy a romantic gondola ride through the canals with Long Beach Gondola Getaway.

The second largest of the Channel Islands, just 22 miles from California's coast, Catalina makes a great family weekend.
Our kids had a blast on the hour-long ferry from Dana Point to the island, where we spotted sailboats, kayakers, and a pod of frolicking dolphins.
Once you disembark in Avalon Bay, grab a golf cart for a tour around the island, and then take a stroll along Crescent Drive, Catalina's main boardwalk, and check out the Catalina Casino (Avalon Casino).
Here, kids can enjoy a treat of spun taffy, ice cream or caramel apples at the old-fashioned confectionary Lloyds of Avalon — — or enjoy a few video games and skee ball at the Metropole Marketplace arcade.
A trip to the island isn't complete without a stroll along the Green Pleasure Pier, where you can grab some fish and chips at Eric's restaurant and then go for a cruise on the bay.
The Undersea Tour aboard the Starlight and Emerald semi-submersible vessels is a must-see.
During the voyage, you'll explore the clear waters of Lover's Cove and a protected kelp forest where you'll come face to face with bright orange garibaldi, spotted calico bass, and opaleyes — among many other types of marine life. The 45-minute tour is also offered at night.
To explore Catalina's rugged interior and native wildlife, hop aboard the Classic Inland Motor Tour, which follows the 1800s stagecoach route. In Middle Ranch, you'll meet Tachi, an endangered Santa Catalina Island Fox who acts as an educational ambassador for her species. You'll also see a herd of wandering bison, native woodpeckers, and perhaps a bald eagle or two.
At El Rancho Escondido, the Wrigley family's Hidden Ranch, you can enjoy an Arabian horse demonstration and then spend about 45 minutes walking through the ranch. Pet the horses in their stables, play with a wandering kitty, or watch a short film on the ranch's history. A small museum displays Bohlin saddles, carriages and family memorabilia.
After your tour, the Golf Gardens are just steps away. Known as one of the world's most challenging and beautiful miniature golf courses, the lushly landscaped grounds offer 18 holes of family fun.
