Portugal. The 5 and half thousand square meters large southern part of the once proud colonial empire is Algarve, bathing all year in the sun. From the hilltops, moor forts look down on to the surroundings. In the old towns narrow roads lead up to the magnificent Manuel-style temples. The buildings are ornamented by Azulejos, moor painted tiles. The monuments and statues summon adventurers and explorers: Magellan and Vasco De Gama. The country is full of fishing villages, palm trees, vine arbours, olive tree orchards, and orange gardens. The Playa de Rocha and the other sandy beaches are surrounded by large cliffs, stone archs and lagoons. On the hill of Moniche we travel among pine trees and para oaks. From the lighthouse of the Saint Vincent cape we can only see the endless Atlantic Ocean, which the medieval man thought to be the end of the world.

The Algarve (Portuguese pronunciation: [aɫˈɡaɾv(ɨ)], from Arabic: الغرب, trans. Al-Gharb, meaning "The West") is the southernmost region of mainland Portugal. It has an area of 5,412 square kilometres (2,090 sq mi) with approximately 450,484 permanent inhabitants, and incorporates 16 municipalities. The region coincides with the Faro District, and has as its administrative centre the city of Faro, where both the region's international airport at Faro (FAO) and public university (the University of the Algarve) are located. Tourism and related activities are extensive and make up the bulk of the Algarve's summer economy. Fish, seafood and fruit production, which includes oranges, carob beans, figs and almonds, are other important activities in the region. The Algarve is the most popular tourist destination in Portugal, and one of the most popular in Europe. Its population triples in the peak holiday season thanks to a high influx of visitors, and receives an average of 7 million foreign tourists each year. In total, including national visitors, almost 10 million people visit the Algarve every year.

The Algarve from Arabic: الغرب, trans. Al-Gharb, meaning "The West") is the southernmost region of mainland Portugal. It has an area of 4,997 square kilometres with 451,006 permanent inhabitants, and incorporates 16 municipalities. The region has as its administrative centre the city of Faro, where both the region's international airport (FAO) and public university (the University of the Algarve) are located. Tourism and related activities are extensive and make up the bulk of the Algarve's summer economy. Production of food, which includes fish and other seafood, fruit, oranges, carob beans, figs and almonds, is also economically important in the region. The Algarve is the most popular tourist destination in Portugal, and one of the most popular in Europe. Its population triples in the peak holiday season thanks to a high influx of visitors, and receives an average of 7 million foreign tourists each year. In total, including national visitors, almost 10 million people visit the Algarve annually.
The Algarve is currently the third richest region in Portugal, after Lisbon and Madeira, with a GDP per capita 86% of the European Union average
The Algarve is alluring. Coastal Algarve receives much exposure for its breathtaking cliffs, golden beaches, scalloped bays and sandy islands. Let's be frank: Portugal's premier holiday destination sold its soul to tourism in the sixties and never really looked back. Behind sections of the south coast's beachscape loom massive conglomerations of bland holiday villas and brash resorts. However the west coast is another story – it's more about nature and less about development.
And yet coastal Algarve is a 'drop in the ocean' for any visitor. The enchanting inner Algarve boasts pretty castle towns and historic villages, cork tree– and flower-covered hillsides, and birdlife. And the wonderful Via Algarviana walking track crosses its breadth.

An der südlichen Algarve, zwischen Lagos und Faro, findet man Jachthäfen und Golfplätze, aber auch Bettenburgen und Partymeilen. Doch im Hinterland bestimmt die Landwirtschaft das Leben. Die Reise endet in Tavira. Dort werden mit Hilfe von Tonkrügen Tintenfische gefangen.
An den Küsten und im Landesinneren zeigt die Filmreihe die faszinierende Vielfalt der Landschaften und Regionen mit ihren Menschen, Kulturen und Traditionen. Der heutige Teil führt in den Südwesten Portugals, an die bei Einheimischen und Touristen beliebte Algarve.
Die Felsenküste der Algarve bietet mit steil abfallenden Kliffs vor blaugrünem Meer spektakuläre Ausblicke. Während die Touristen in den Süden strömen, haben sich die Steilküsten der Westalgarve ihre Ursprünglichkeit bewahrt. Im Meer vor Vale do Bispo werden die köstlichen Percebes gepflückt, Entenmuscheln, die eigentlich Krebse sind. Die Portugiesen haben eine Vorliebe für Süßes. Und so gibt es auch in dieser Region zahlreiche Bäcker und Konditoren, die aus Mandeln, Feigen, Johannisbrot und Marzipan wahre Wunderwerke zaubern.
An der südlichen Algarve, zwischen Lagos und Faro, findet man Jachthäfen und Golfplätze, aber auch Bettenburgen und Partymeilen. Doch im Hinterland bestimmt die Landwirtschaft das Leben. Manuel João Fortes ist seit 40 Jahren Korkschäler. Um einen Baum zu entrinden, benötigt er nur eine halbe Stunde. Das Naturprodukt verschließt nicht nur Weinflaschen, es wird auch als Dämmstoff und Bodenbelag genutzt oder findet Verwendung in modischen Accessoires. Das Naturschutzgebiet Ria Formosa gilt als Brutstätte und Zufluchtsort unzähliger Vogelarten. Und hier wird traditionell Meersalz gewonnen. Der Trend zur bewussten Ernährung brachte neuen Aufschwung für die Salzgärten. Flor de Sal wird in viele Länder exportiert.
Carla und Sonia Peralta sind Hundenärrinnen. Vor allem der Portugiesische Wasserhund hat es ihnen angetan. Seit einer dieser gar nicht so schwimmfreudigen Hunde ins Weiße Haus einzog, blüht das Geschäft mit der Aufzucht. Früher halfen die Hunde den Fischern bei der Arbeit. Die Reise endet in Tavira. Dort werden mit Hilfe von Tonkrügen Tintenfische gefangen. Der Krug wird mit einem Seil ins Wasser gelassen, die Wärme des Tons zieht die Tintenfische an, sie schwimmen hinein und können mühelos samt Krug aus dem Wasser gezogen werden.

An den Küsten und im Landesinneren zeigt die Filmreihe die faszinierende Vielfalt der Landschaften und Regionen mit ihren Menschen, Kulturen und Traditionen. Der heutige Teil führt in den Südwesten Portugals, an die bei Einheimischen und Touristen beliebte Algarve.
Die Felsenküste der Algarve bietet mit steil abfallenden Kliffs vor blaugrünem Meer spektakuläre Ausblicke. Während die Touristen in den Süden strömen, haben sich die Steilküsten der Westalgarve ihre Ursprünglichkeit bewahrt. Im Meer vor Vale do Bispo werden die köstlichen Percebes gepflückt, Entenmuscheln, die eigentlich Krebse sind. Die Portugiesen haben eine Vorliebe für Süßes. Und so gibt es auch in dieser Region zahlreiche Bäcker und Konditoren, die aus Mandeln, Feigen, Johannisbrot und Marzipan wahre Wunderwerke zaubern.
An der südlichen Algarve, zwischen Lagos und Faro, findet man Jachthäfen und Golfplätze, aber auch Bettenburgen und Partymeilen. Doch im Hinterland bestimmt die Landwirtschaft das Leben. Manuel João Fortes ist seit 40 Jahren Korkschäler. Um einen Baum zu entrinden, benötigt er nur eine halbe Stunde. Das Naturprodukt verschließt nicht nur Weinflaschen, es wird auch als Dämmstoff und Bodenbelag genutzt oder findet Verwendung in modischen Accessoires. Das Naturschutzgebiet Ria Formosa gilt als Brutstätte und Zufluchtsort unzähliger Vogelarten. Und hier wird traditionell Meersalz gewonnen. Der Trend zur bewussten Ernährung brachte neuen Aufschwung für die Salzgärten. Flor de Sal wird in viele Länder exportiert.
Carla und Sonia Peralta sind Hundenärrinnen. Vor allem der Portugiesische Wasserhund hat es ihnen angetan. Seit einer dieser gar nicht so schwimmfreudigen Hunde ins Weiße Haus einzog, blüht das Geschäft mit der Aufzucht. Früher halfen die Hunde den Fischern bei der Arbeit. Die Reise endet in Tavira. Dort werden mit Hilfe von Tonkrügen Tintenfische gefangen. Der Krug wird mit einem Seil ins Wasser gelassen, die Wärme des Tons zieht die Tintenfische an, sie schwimmen hinein und können mühelos samt Krug aus dem Wasser gezogen werden.

If you’re thinking of visiting Portugal, look no further than Albufeira, situated in the Algarve.
A popular tourist spot is the old town. Here you can take to the shops and markets, wine and dine in its many bars and restaurants. In the evening, watch the old town come to life as street performers entertain the crowds.
If you come at the right time you’ll probably catch a local event or two such as the Fisherman’s Festival, where you can enjoy local food and entertainment.
Or, if you’re looking for a more lively night out there’s the New Town, otherwise known as the strip. Situated a short distance away, the strip has a wide range of bars and clubs and is a great destination for partygoers.
There are tonnes of activities you can do in Albufeira. Thanks to its location on the Algarve coast there are numerous beaches where you can relax, and even have a barbeque on!
If relaxing isn’t your thing then you can take part in many water activities, such as parasailing, jet skiing and many more.
