Warlords, soldiers, and child laborers all toil over a mineral you've never even heard of. Coltan is a conflict mineral in nearly every cell phone, laptop, and electronic device. It's also tied to the deaths of over 5 million people in Congo since 1990.

Rwandan Genocide: Facts, Timeline, Death Toll, Causes, Aftermath, History (1998)

The Rwandan Genocide was a genocidal mass slaughter of Tutsi and moderate Hutu in Rwanda by members of the Hutu majority. During the approximate 100-day period from April 7, 1994, to mid-July, an estimated 500,000–1,000,000 Rwandans were killed,[1] constituting as much as 20% of the country's total population and 70% of the Tutsi then living in Rwanda. The genocide was planned by members of the core political elite known as the akazu, many of whom occupied positions at top levels of the national government. Perpetrators came from the ranks of the Rwandan army, the National Police (gendarmerie), government-backed militias including the Interahamwe and Impuzamugambi, and the Hutu civilian population.
The genocide took place in the context of the Rwandan Civil War, an ongoing conflict beginning in 1990 between the Hutu-led government and the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), which was largely composed of Tutsi refugees whose families had fled to Uganda following earlier waves of Hutu violence against the Tutsi. International pressure on the Hutu-led government of Juvénal Habyarimana resulted in a cease-fire in 1993 with a roadmap to implement the Arusha Accords that would create a power-sharing government with the RPF. This agreement displeased many conservative Hutu, including members of the Akazu, who viewed it as conceding to enemy demands. Among the broader Hutu populace, the RPF military campaign had also intensified support for the so-called "Hutu Power" ideology, which portrayed the RPF as an alien force intent on reinstating the Tutsi monarchy and enslaving the Hutus, a prospect met with extreme opposition.
On April 6, 1994, an airplane carrying Habyarimana and Burundian president Cyprien Ntaryamira was shot down on its descent into Kigali, killing all on board.[2] Genocidal killings began the following day: soldiers, police and militia quickly executed key Tutsi and moderate Hutu leaders, then erected checkpoints and barricades and used Rwandans' national identity cards to systematically verify their ethnicity and kill Tutsi. These forces recruited or pressured Hutu civilians to arm themselves with machetes, clubs, blunt objects and other weapons to rape, maim and kill their Tutsi neighbors and destroy or steal their property. The breach of the peace agreement led the RPF to restart their offensive and rapidly seize control of the northern part of the country before capturing Kigali in mid-July, bringing an end to the genocide. During these events and in their aftermath, the United Nations (UN) and countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Belgium were criticized for their inaction, including failure to strengthen the force and mandate of the UN Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) peacekeepers, while observers criticized the government of France for alleged support of the genocidal regime after the genocide had begun.
The genocide had a lasting and profound impact on Rwanda and its neighboring countries. The pervasive use of war rape caused a spike in HIV infection, including babies born of rape to newly infected mothers; many households were headed by orphaned children or widows. The destruction of infrastructure and a severe depopulation of the country crippled the economy, challenging the nascent government to achieve rapid economic growth and stabilization. The RPF military victory and installation of an RPF-dominated government prompted many Hutus to flee to neighboring countries, particularly in the eastern portion of Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) where the Hutu genocidaires began to regroup in refugee camps along the border with Rwanda. Declaring a need to avert further genocide, the RPF-led government led military incursions into Zaire, including the First (1996–97) and Second (1998–2003) Congo Wars. Armed struggles between the Rwandan government and their opponents in DRC have continued to play out through proxy militias in the Goma region, including the M23 rebellion (2003–2013). Large Rwandan Hutu and Tutsi populations continue to live as refugees throughout the region. Today, Rwanda has two public holidays commemorating the genocide. The national commemoration period begins with Genocide Memorial Day on April 7 and concludes with Liberation Day on July 4. The week following April 7 is designated an official week of mourning. The Rwandan Genocide served as the impetus for creating the International Criminal Court to eliminate the need for ad hoc tribunals to prosecute those accused in future incidents of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

This film is also available at http://to.pbs.org/hMZzq0 Watch Daniel Goldhagen's ground-breaking documentary focused on the worldwide phenomenon of genocide, which premiered on PBS on April 14, 2010. To see this and other full-length PBS videos go to http://video.pbs.org. Please support your local PBS station at http://www.pbs.org/support
"By the most fundamental measure -- the number of people killed -- the perpetrators of mass murder since the beginning of the twentieth century have taken the lives of more people than have died in military conflict. So genocide is worse than war," reiterates Goldhagen. "This is a little-known fact that should be a central focus of international politics, because once you know it, the world, international politics, and what we need to do all begin to look substantially different from how they are typically conceived."
WORSE THAN WAR documents Goldhagen¹s travels, teachings, and interviews in nine countries around the world, bringing viewers on an unprecedented journey of insight and analysis. In a film that is highly cinematic and evocative throughout, he speaks with victims, perpetrators, witnesses, politicians, diplomats, historians, humanitarian aid workers, and journalists, all with the purpose of explaining and understanding the critical features of genocide and how to finally stop it.

"[Sport] is a powerful tool for progress and for development," said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2011.
In post-genocide Rwanda, Felicite Rwemalika's work is an embodiment of this idea. She has forged opportunities which have brought increased wealth and skills to women and their families - all by getting women to play football.
Rwemalika used to run a beauty salon, where she encountered many women who were traumatised by the genocide.
"Women are the most vulnerable after the genocide. They were raped several times, their husbands left them, they were killed, children were killed, and they didn't have hope for the future," she says.
So she decided to do something to "change their mindset."
Before the genocide, football for women was unthinkable. And old attitudes die hard. But there were also authorities which wanted to support change and Rwemalika was able to persuade the city of Kigali to support girls' football teams - and even pay them a wage which enabled them to stay in school.
Rwemalika's project, AKWOS (the Association of Kigali Women in Sports), is about more than just football: in a country where only 15 percent of girls attend secondary school, it has allowed women to continue their education.
It gives women and girls a safe space to meet and talk and has had a huge impact on their confidence.
Others have grouped together to start farming and other co-operatives and are now earning a significant income for the first time. And the evidence shows that once women control the household spend, they invest far more of it than men do in their children, driving economic growth.
We follow Rwemalika and head coach Grace Nyinawumuntu as they travel to the town of Gashanda to persuade the women there to start a team and a local primary school to encourage the girls to play. And we see how a simple football game has the power to empower women, impact different communities and these benefits in turn have spread out across the country.

Episode 5 The Death of a Nation: Rwanda
Twelve years after the genocide of Rwanda that claimed the lives of 1,000,000 people, Tim and Will enter a country still filled with guilt. With over 80% of the population taking part in the murders of the Tutsi tribe, justice and reconciliation is difficult. As they visit the sites and hear of the atrocities, the missionaries are filled with zeal to preach the message of hope. On Christmas day in a remote village they speak of life and the new life Rwanda will find in Christ. Hundreds respond and the miracle of salvation is the anointing that heals the broken hearts.

Cannibalism, murder and rape are just a part of everyday life in certain regions of Liberia. Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of this country's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. In 2009, we went to Liberia to rummage through the messy remains of a country ravaged by 14 years of civil war.
UPDATE: Charles G. Taylor, former President of Liberia and warlord, has been convicted by an international tribunal of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including rape, murder, and the use of child soldiers. He is the first head of state to be found guilty by an international court since the Nuremberg trials.

Between April and July 1994, more than 800,000 men, women and children, mostly from Rwanda's Tutsi minority were slaughtered.
In one of the worst atrocities in recent history, Hutu paramilitaries unleashed a bloodbath, killing every person they could find, as neighbours murdered neighbours.
Sparked by the death of President Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, when his plane was shot down above Kigali airport on 6 April 1994, Hutu extremists seized on his death to exterminate the Tutsi community.
In Rwanda: From hatred to reconciliation , we explore the genocide through the prism of the media, exploring their role - both then and now.
This film explores how the country's earliest print journals, followed by newspapers and radio, all played a major part in reinforcing prejudices, inciting racial hatred and fanning the flames of violence.
The Catholic church and its journal Kinyamateka, the country's first periodical, are now seen as playing a vital role in the creation of racist ideology.
Produced in the 1930s under Belgian rule - one of Kinyamateka's early journalists, Gregoire Kayibanda, would later become the country's first president after independence.
"[Kayibanda] used to encourage the Hutu to expel the Tutsi or fight them, viciously." says Jill Bayafra from Rwanda University. "He used to compare them to snakes."
In the 1960s, radio would become a powerful means to spread hate and when the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA), made up of exiled Tutsis, invaded in 1990, Radio Rwanda stepped up its anti-Tutsi propaganda.
In June 1993, a new radio station, Radio Television Libre des Mille Collines (RTLMC), encouraged people to arm themselves and attack Tutsis.
At the height of the genocide, it broadcast lists of people to be killed and instructed killers on where to find them.
"Feeling pressured" says Emmanuel Ndaysaba, "I took my sword and joined the militias."
Twenty years on, and with many of those responsible serving sentences for war crimes, the media now spreads a new spirit of reconciliation - and Emmanuel has since re-visited his violent past: "Driven by my conscience, I confronted those I committed crimes against," he says.
