On Australian roads since 2010, the Mitsubishi ASX is one of the most popular small SUVs on the new car market. Offering buyers space, style and flexibility, the model has been freshly updated for 2015.
And with a range starting at $24,990, and this top-spec XLS version now more affordable than before, what better time to have a closer look at this Japanese Sports Crossover.
Sporting new black wheel arch surrounds and bigger 18-inch alloy wheels, the flagship Mitsubishi ASX may not quite have the same flair as the Peugeot 2008 or Renault Captur but it can still stick out from the crowd.
Helping with this too are automatic dusk-sensing halogen headlights, fog lights and LED daytime running lights, this huge panoramic glass roof, and rear privacy glass.
Sitting between the Mitsubishi Outlander and the Mitsubishi Lancer, and actually based on the same ‘GS’ platform as both, the Mitsubishi ASX offers reasonable levels of legroom and head room.
Rear passengers also get to enjoy this fold-down centre armrest with twin cup holders. Sadly though, rear storage back here is sorely lacking with no door pockets of any kind and only a single map pocket. There’s also no rear air vents.
On the plus side, there are three top-tether points and two ISOFIX points.
Also, by simply dropping these 60:40 split-fold rear seats you can expand boot capacity from 393 litres to 1143 litres.
Despite a new leather steering wheel – which is both reach and rake adjustable – and these heated leather seats, the ASX cabin is starting to feel its age.
There’s plenty of hard, scratchy plastics around and some pretty basic switchgear.
Mitsubishi has updated its seven-inch infotainment touchscreen though, which now includes DAB digital radio as well as satellite navigation, Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming.
Comfort up front is pretty good and storage is addressed with cup holders, door pockets, a decent glove box and this twin-chamber centre console.
You also get rain-sensing wipers, a rear-view camera and rear parking sensors, a proximity-sensing smart key and a push-button start.
Small enough for the city but capable enough to leave it, the Mitsubishi ASX is also flexible enough to fit almost any lifestyle. And it’s big enough for even the family dog…

Compact SUV sales are booming. Australian buyers can’t seem to get enough of these high-rise hatchbacks.
But what is it that makes cars like this so appealing?
Is it the tougher look? The promise of adventure? Confidence on the road?
Take the Mitsubishi ASX for example. This was one of the first of the current crop of compact SUV’s to hit Australian roads and is consistently a top seller in the segment.
Compared to a hatch or a wagon, SUV’s in general look chunky and tougher.
Most small SUV’s are soft-roaders, meaning they’re more at home around town.
It’s a bit like glamping… you want to test the water, but not jump straight into camping.
In the same way, the ASX isn’t a Pajero or a Challenger, it’s a bit of a poser – just like me convincing myself I’m roughing it here glamping.
The ASX looks tough, but it’s more luxurious in its design and engineering.
Another major reason that people want an SUV is that dream of clocking off Friday, heading off on a weekend adventure, if and when you want… or not, you don’t have to do anything out of the ordinary, it can just get you around town… and that’s the point.
Though it looks the business, like most of its competitors it’s not really off-road capable, it’s a bit more cushy than that. Though a little bit of unsealed road, a few puddles and a bit of mud is fine.
But the ASX is a great way to get off the beaten track – it has the capability to cover your budding adventurous side.
How is that? What does the ASX have that the majority of other small SUV’s don’t.
You can manually lock it into a full 4WD mode – giving you that confidence when you do wander off the beaten track a little.
Most cars in that segment that have 4wd only have an on demand 4wd system – you have no control over when it kicks in.
But it’s that confidence around town that attracts buyers to this segment.
The high driving position is the flavor of the decade – but it doesn’t feel big and bulky on the road like large SUV’s. It’s as easy to drive as a hatch or sedan.
Small SUV registrations were up 24.4 per cent over 2014 and sales of conventional small cars are dropping.
The now-defunct Hyundai ix35, has been king of this segment, and it’s now been replaced by the Hyundai Tucson while the ASX is the second best-seller.
Newcomers the Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3 are causing a stir though.
But the segment shows no sign of slowing down, there are plenty of buyers to go around.

The new Mitsubishi Outlander launch press launch has just wrapped up. You'll see a blip in 2016 Outlander marketing in coming days, and if you’re thinking of buying one, this 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander review is exactly what you need to know.
The 2015/2016 Outlander is a facelift of the old model. Same fundamentals, minus some of the nagging criticisms that dogged the old one. (The 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander: Bit noisy, bit harsh, bit cheap and nasty inside; bit revvy on the CVT front.)
Mitsubishi Outlander prices are largely unchanged: either within $750 more, or $400 less than the predecessor, or no change. The cheapest models have gone up, and the dearest models have come down.
Aside from the new Mitsubishi Outlander nosecone, called Dynamic Shield, the biggest change is the new CVT control system. It’s called CVT8. Mitsubishi says CVT8 delivers 26 per cent more torque transmission than the predecessor. Sharper throttle response and a resulting more intuitive interplay between throttle, revs and road speed make the CVT feel less reprehensible, allegedly, and also delivers a very slight boost in fuel efficiency.
They've pumped up the Outlander's acoustic insulation and tweaked the glass to cut noise, vibration and harshness. And there's the odd suspension upgrade as well. Bigger rear dampers - that kind of thing. Warranty remains five years, but the distance attached to that warranty has come back to 100,000 kilometres.
All new Outlander models get new 18-inch alloys - a big upgrade for the base model there. LED daytime running lamps and LED combination rear lamps are standard across the range, there’s a new, very nice steering wheel as well, and more comfy seats as well.
There are three models: LS, XLS and Exceed. When it comes to new stuff, the base model LS gets privacy glass and repeater lamps in the wing mirrors. Jumping up to the mid-spec XLS gets you digital audio, electric folding and heated wing mirrors for those urban jungles where most Outlanders will do business. And the top-spec Exceed gets LED headlamps and glossy black garnish.
There are three carryover Mitsubishi Outlander engines: 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre petrol, and a 2.2 diesel. The diesel comes with a conventional six-speed auto and all-wheel drive only. It works like this: the 2.0-litre engine is 2WD only, and you can only get it in XL and XLS versions. 2.4-litre petrol is available with all-wheel drive only, right across the range. If you want seven seats, that’s XLS or Exceed, petrol or diesel. There’s only one manual - a throwback and, I suspect, it’s just there to be a price leader.
If you’ve got about $40,000 to spend, a 2.4-litre Mitsubishi Outlander XLS all-wheel drive is looking pretty good. If I was spending my money on an Outlander, that would probably be the one.
Outlander is effectively one rung down from the pick of the heavy-hitting SUV seven seaters: Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento and Toyota Kluger - it’s not as potent, nor is it as premium. But it does represent a significant saving in cash. That Hyundai/Kia 2.2 diesel in Sorento and Santa Fe is a cracker that Mitsubishi’s 2.2 diesel in XLS and Exceed just can’t match. And 3.5-litre V6s, like the Kluger and Sorento, do tend to murder 2.4-litre Mitsubishi fours. I’d be putting the smart money on the Goliath option there.
In the five-seat SUV set, the Mazda CX-5 out-points the Mitsubishi across all three engines. The CX-5 also features a conventional six-speed auto, and it’s a compelling choice following its recent facelift - so have a good look at the CX-5 if you need a five-seat SUV.
If you're looking at an Outlander, by definition you're also in the market for a Nissan X-TRAIL. The petrol engines are line-ball between the two, but Outlander’s 2.2 diesel absolutely eclipses Nissan’s 1.6 diesel.
Finally, if you don’t need seven seats, but you want a wagon for the family, why not just buy a car? I’m not being flippant. People don’t ask themselves why they’re actually buying an SUV. You can get a Mazda6 Touring (the station wagon) for the same approximate price as an XLS 2.4 Outlander.

Mitsubishi RVR
The Mitsubishi RVR is a range of cars produced by Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi from 1991 to 2002 and from 2010 to present. The first two generations were classified as compact multi-purpose vehicles (MPV), whereas the model introduced in 2010 is a compact crossover.
The RVR was Mitsubishi's Recreational Vehicle debut during the Japanese economic boom. The cars were sold at the Mitsubishi Japan dealership chain called Car Plaza. RVR is an acronym for "Recreation Vehicle Runner". In addition, the original logo had a Cyrillic Я on the first letter. It had a convenient size passenger cabin and spacious 4–5 person capacity with a youth-oriented approach, therefore making it more appealing to young people . Television commercials in Japan used Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck as spokespeople. It was also developed and released during Japan's "bubble economy", and had gained popularity due to its ease of use sliding door on the passenger side.
It was a tall wagon, off-road model that sought awareness towards "sports gear" or outdoor lifestyles to other companies, similar to an approach used for the introduction of the Honda CR-V, allowing drivers to setting their own routes, and it had an especially good sales record in the beginning, even with the decline of the RV sales boom. Unfortunately due to declining sales, it was discontinued in August 2002.

The Mitsubishi Group (三菱グループ, Mitsubishi Gurūpu) (also known as the Mitsubishi Group of Companies or Mitsubishi Companies) is a group of autonomous Japanese multinational companies covering a range of businesses which share the Mitsubishi brand, trademark, and legacy.
The Mitsubishi group of companies form a loose entity, the Mitsubishi Keiretsu, which is often referenced in Japanese and US media and official reports; in general these companies all descend from the zaibatsu of the same name. History
The Mitsubishi company was established as a shipping firm by Yatarō Iwasaki (1834–1885) in 1870. In 1873, its name was changed to Mitsubishi Shokai. The name Mitsubishi (三菱) consists of two parts: "mitsu" meaning "three" and "hishi" (which becomes "bishi" under rendaku) meaning "water caltrop" (also called "water chestnut"), and hence "rhombus", which is reflected in the company's logo. It is also translated as "three diamonds".

The new Mitsubishi Outlander launch press launch has just wrapped up. You'll see a blip in 2016 Outlander marketing in coming days, and if you’re thinking of buying one, this 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander review is exactly what you need to know. The 2015/2016 Outlander is a facelift of the old model. Same fundamentals, minus some of the nagging criticisms that dogged the old one. (The 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander: Bit noisy, bit harsh, bit cheap and nasty inside; bit revvy on the CVT front.) Mitsubishi Outlander prices are largely unchanged: either within $750 more, or $400 less than the predecessor, or no change. The cheapest models have gone up, and the dearest models have come down. Aside from the new Mitsubishi Outlander nosecone, called Dynamic Shield, the biggest change is the new CVT control system. It’s called CVT8. Mitsubishi says CVT8 delivers 26 per cent more torque transmission than the predecessor. Sharper throttle response and a resulting more intuitive interplay between throttle, revs and road speed make the CVT feel less reprehensible, allegedly, and also delivers a very slight boost in fuel efficiency. They've pumped up the Outlander's acoustic insulation and tweaked the glass to cut noise, vibration and harshness. And there's the odd suspension upgrade as well. Bigger rear dampers - that kind of thing. Warranty remains five years, but the distance attached to that warranty has come back to 100,000 kilometres. All new Outlander models get new 18-inch alloys - a big upgrade for the base model there. LED daytime running lamps and LED combination rear lamps are standard across the range, there’s a new, very nice steering wheel as well, and more comfy seats as well. There are three models: LS, XLS and Exceed. When it comes to new stuff, the base model LS gets privacy glass and repeater lamps in the wing mirrors. Jumping up to the mid-spec XLS gets you digital audio, electric folding and heated wing mirrors for those urban jungles where most Outlanders will do business. And the top-spec Exceed gets LED headlamps and glossy black garnish. There are three carryover Mitsubishi Outlander engines: 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre petrol, and a 2.2 diesel. The diesel comes with a conventional six-speed auto and all-wheel drive only. It works like this: the 2.0-litre engine is 2WD only, and you can only get it in XL and XLS versions. 2.4-litre petrol is available with all-wheel drive only, right across the range. If you want seven seats, that’s XLS or Exceed, petrol or diesel. There’s only one manual - a throwback and, I suspect, it’s just there to be a price leader. If you’ve got about $40,000 to spend, a 2.4-litre Mitsubishi Outlander XLS all-wheel drive is looking pretty good. If I was spending my money on an Outlander, that would probably be the one. Outlander is effectively one rung down from the pick of the heavy-hitting SUV seven seaters: Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento and Toyota Kluger - it’s not as potent, nor is it as premium. But it does represent a significant saving in cash. That Hyundai/Kia 2.2 diesel in Sorento and Santa Fe is a cracker that Mitsubishi’s 2.2 diesel in XLS and Exceed just can’t match. And 3.5-litre V6s, like the Kluger and Sorento, do tend to murder 2.4-litre Mitsubishi fours. I’d be putting the smart money on the Goliath option there. In the five-seat SUV set, the Mazda CX-5 out-points the Mitsubishi across all three engines. The CX-5 also features a conventional six-speed auto, and it’s a compelling choice following its recent facelift - so have a good look at the CX-5 if you need a five-seat SUV. If you're looking at an Outlander, by definition you're also in the market for a Nissan X-TRAIL. The petrol engines are line-ball between the two, but Outlander’s 2.2 diesel absolutely eclipses Nissan’s 1.6 diesel. Finally, if you don’t need seven seats, but you want a wagon for the family, why not just buy a car? I’m not being flippant. People don’t ask themselves why they’re actually buying an SUV. You can get a Mazda6 Touring (the station wagon) for the same approximate price as an XLS 2.4 Outlander. Don’t forget to like this video, and subscribe for regular updates. On Australian roads since 2010, the Mitsubishi ASX is one of the most popular small SUVs on the new car market. Offering buyers space, style and flexibility, the model has been freshly updated for 2015.
And with a range starting at $24,990, and this top-spec XLS version now more affordable than before, what better time to have a closer look at this Japanese Sports Crossover.
Sporting new black wheel arch surrounds and bigger 18-inch alloy wheels, the flagship Mitsubishi ASX may not quite have the same flair as the Peugeot 2008 or Renault Captur but it can still stick out from the crowd.
Helping with this too are automatic dusk-sensing halogen headlights, fog lights and LED daytime running lights, this huge panoramic glass roof, and rear privacy glass.
Sitting between the Mitsubishi Outlander and the Mitsubishi Lancer, and actually based on the same ‘GS’ platform as both, the Mitsubishi ASX offers reasonable levels of legroom and head room.
Rear passengers also get to enjoy this fold-down centre armrest with twin cup holders. Sadly though, rear storage back here is sorely lacking with no door pockets of any kind and only a single map pocket. There’s also no rear air vents.
On the plus side, there are three top-tether points and two ISOFIX points.
Also, by simply dropping these 60:40 split-fold rear seats you can expand boot capacity from 393 litres to 1143 litres.
Despite a new leather steering wheel – which is both reach and rake adjustable – and these heated leather seats, the ASX cabin is starting to feel its age.
There’s plenty of hard, scratchy plastics around and some pretty basic switchgear.
Mitsubishi has updated its seven-inch infotainment touchscreen though, which now includes DAB digital radio as well as satellite navigation, Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming.
Comfort up front is pretty good and storage is addressed with cup holders, door pockets, a decent glove box and this twin-chamber centre console.
You also get rain-sensing wipers, a rear-view camera and rear parking sensors, a proximity-sensing smart key and a push-button start.
Small enough for the city but capable enough to leave it, the Mitsubishi ASX is also flexible enough to fit almost any lifestyle. And it’s big enough for even the family dog…

Compact SUV sales are booming. Australian buyers can’t seem to get enough of these high-rise hatchbacks.
But what is it that makes cars like this so appealing?
Is it the tougher look? The promise of adventure? Confidence on the road?
Take the Mitsubishi ASX for example. This was one of the first of the current crop of compact SUV’s to hit Australian roads and is consistently a top seller in the segment.
Compared to a hatch or a wagon, SUV’s in general look chunky and tougher.
Most small SUV’s are soft-roaders, meaning they’re more at home around town.
It’s a bit like glamping… you want to test the water, but not jump straight into camping.
In the same way, the ASX isn’t a Pajero or a Challenger, it’s a bit of a poser – just like me convincing myself I’m roughing it here glamping.
The ASX looks tough, but it’s more luxurious in its design and engineering.
Another major reason that people want an SUV is that dream of clocking off Friday, heading off on a weekend adventure, if and when you want… or not, you don’t have to do anything out of the ordinary, it can just get you around town… and that’s the point.
Though it looks the business, like most of its competitors it’s not really off-road capable, it’s a bit more cushy than that. Though a little bit of unsealed road, a few puddles and a bit of mud is fine.
But the ASX is a great way to get off the beaten track – it has the capability to cover your budding adventurous side.
How is that? What does the ASX have that the majority of other small SUV’s don’t.
You can manually lock it into a full 4WD mode – giving you that confidence when you do wander off the beaten track a little.
Most cars in that segment that have 4wd only have an on demand 4wd system – you have no control over when it kicks in.
But it’s that confidence around town that attracts buyers to this segment.
The high driving position is the flavor of the decade – but it doesn’t feel big and bulky on the road like large SUV’s. It’s as easy to drive as a hatch or sedan.
Small SUV registrations were up 24.4 per cent over 2014 and sales of conventional small cars are dropping.
The now-defunct Hyundai ix35, has been king of this segment, and it’s now been replaced by the Hyundai Tucson while the ASX is the second best-seller.
Newcomers the Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3 are causing a stir though.
But the segment shows no sign of slowing down, there are plenty of buyers to go around.

Take the Mitsubishi ASX for example. This was one of the first of the current crop of compact SUV’s to hit Australian roads and is consistently a top seller in the segment.
Compared to a hatch or a wagon, SUV’s in general look chunky and tougher.
Most small SUV’s are soft-roaders, meaning they’re more at home around town.
It’s a bit like glamping… you want to test the water, but not jump straight into camping.
In the same way, the ASX isn’t a Pajero or a Challenger, it’s a bit of a poser – just like me convincing myself I’m roughing it here glamping.
The ASX looks tough, but it’s more luxurious in its design and engineering.
Another major reason that people want an SUV is that dream of clocking off Friday, heading off on a weekend adventure, if and when you want… or not, you don’t have to do anything out of the ordinary, it can just get you around town… and that’s the point.
Though it looks the business, like most of its competitors it’s not really off-road capable, it’s a bit more cushy than that. Though a little bit of unsealed road, a few puddles and a bit of mud is fine.
But the ASX is a great way to get off the beaten track – it has the capability to cover your budding adventurous side.
How is that? What does the ASX have that the majority of other small SUV’s don’t.
You can manually lock it into a full 4WD mode – giving you that confidence when you do wander off the beaten track a little.
Most cars in that segment that have 4wd only have an on demand 4wd system – you have no control over when it kicks in.
But it’s that confidence around town that attracts buyers to this segment.
The high driving position is the flavor of the decade – but it doesn’t feel big and bulky on the road like large SUV’s. It’s as easy to drive as a hatch or sedan.
Small SUV registrations were up 24.4 per cent over 2014 and sales of conventional small cars are dropping.
The now-defunct Hyundai ix35, has been king of this segment, and it’s now been replaced by the Hyundai Tucson while the ASX is the second best-seller.
Newcomers the Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3 are causing a stir though.
But the segment shows no sign of slowing down, there are plenty of buyers to go around.

The new Mitsubishi Outlander launch press launch has just wrapped up. You'll see a blip in 2016 Outlander marketing in coming days, and if you’re thinking of buying one, this 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander review is exactly what you need to know.
The 2015/2016 Outlander is a facelift of the old model. Same fundamentals, minus some of the nagging criticisms that dogged the old one. (The 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander: Bit noisy, bit harsh, bit cheap and nasty inside; bit revvy on the CVT front.)
Mitsubishi Outlander prices are largely unchanged: either within $750 more, or $400 less than the predecessor, or no change. The cheapest models have gone up, and the dearest models have come down.
Aside from the new Mitsubishi Outlander nosecone, called Dynamic Shield, the biggest change is the new CVT control system. It’s called CVT8. Mitsubishi says CVT8 delivers 26 per cent more torque transmission than the predecessor. Sharper throttle response and a resulting more intuitive interplay between throttle, revs and road speed make the CVT feel less reprehensible, allegedly, and also delivers a very slight boost in fuel efficiency.
They've pumped up the Outlander's acoustic insulation and tweaked the glass to cut noise, vibration and harshness. And there's the odd suspension upgrade as well. Bigger rear dampers - that kind of thing. Warranty remains five years, but the distance attached to that warranty has come back to 100,000 kilometres.
All new Outlander models get new 18-inch alloys - a big upgrade for the base model there. LED daytime running lamps and LED combination rear lamps are standard across the range, there’s a new, very nice steering wheel as well, and more comfy seats as well.
There are three models: LS, XLS and Exceed. When it comes to new stuff, the base model LS gets privacy glass and repeater lamps in the wing mirrors. Jumping up to the mid-spec XLS gets you digital audio, electric folding and heated wing mirrors for those urban jungles where most Outlanders will do business. And the top-spec Exceed gets LED headlamps and glossy black garnish.
There are three carryover Mitsubishi Outlander engines: 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre petrol, and a 2.2 diesel. The diesel comes with a conventional six-speed auto and all-wheel drive only. It works like this: the 2.0-litre engine is 2WD only, and you can only get it in XL and XLS versions. 2.4-litre petrol is available with all-wheel drive only, right across the range. If you want seven seats, that’s XLS or Exceed, petrol or diesel. There’s only one manual - a throwback and, I suspect, it’s just there to be a price leader.
If you’ve got about $40,000 to spend, a 2.4-litre Mitsubishi Outlander XLS all-wheel drive is looking pretty good. If I was spending my money on an Outlander, that would probably be the one.
Outlander is effectively one rung down from the pick of the heavy-hitting SUV seven seaters: Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento and Toyota Kluger - it’s not as potent, nor is it as premium. But it does represent a significant saving in cash. That Hyundai/Kia 2.2 diesel in Sorento and Santa Fe is a cracker that Mitsubishi’s 2.2 diesel in XLS and Exceed just can’t match. And 3.5-litre V6s, like the Kluger and Sorento, do tend to murder 2.4-litre Mitsubishi fours. I’d be putting the smart money on the Goliath option there.
In the five-seat SUV set, the Mazda CX-5 out-points the Mitsubishi across all three engines. The CX-5 also features a conventional six-speed auto, and it’s a compelling choice following its recent facelift - so have a good look at the CX-5 if you need a five-seat SUV.
If you're looking at an Outlander, by definition you're also in the market for a Nissan X-TRAIL. The petrol engines are line-ball between the two, but Outlander’s 2.2 diesel absolutely eclipses Nissan’s 1.6 diesel.
Finally, if you don’t need seven seats, but you want a wagon for the family, why not just buy a car? I’m not being flippant. People don’t ask themselves why they’re actually buying an SUV. You can get a Mazda6 Touring (the station wagon) for the same approximate price as an XLS 2.4 Outlander.

The small SUV segment is one of the most hotly contested on the market, and the Mitsubishi ASX has managed to work its way to a handy number-two sales position (behind the Hyundai ix35). Launched in 2010, the Mitsubishi ASX is getting on in age, but still manages to cut a sleek line on the road with flared wheel arches and a higher ride height than a regular small hatch. On Australian roads since 2010, the Mitsubishi ASX is one of the most popular small SUVs on the new car market. Offering buyers space, style and flexibility, the model has been freshly updated for 2015.
And with a range starting at $24,990, and this top-spec XLS version now more affordable than before, what better time to have a closer look at this Japanese Sports Crossover.
Sporting new black wheel arch surrounds and bigger 18-inch alloy wheels, the flagship Mitsubishi ASX may not quite have the same flair as the Peugeot 2008 or Renault Captur but it can still stick out from the crowd.
Helping with this too are automatic dusk-sensing halogen headlights, fog lights and LED daytime running lights, this huge panoramic glass roof, and rear privacy glass.
Sitting between the Mitsubishi Outlander and the Mitsubishi Lancer, and actually based on the same ‘GS’ platform as both, the Mitsubishi ASX offers reasonable levels of legroom and head room.
Rear passengers also get to enjoy this fold-down centre armrest with twin cup holders. Sadly though, rear storage back here is sorely lacking with no door pockets of any kind and only a single map pocket. There’s also no rear air vents.
On the plus side, there are three top-tether points and two ISOFIX points.
Also, by simply dropping these 60:40 split-fold rear seats you can expand boot capacity from 393 litres to 1143 litres.
Despite a new leather steering wheel – which is both reach and rake adjustable – and these heated leather seats, the ASX cabin is starting to feel its age.
There’s plenty of hard, scratchy plastics around and some pretty basic switchgear.
Mitsubishi has updated its seven-inch infotainment touchscreen though, which now includes DAB digital radio as well as satellite navigation, Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming.
Comfort up front is pretty good and storage is addressed with cup holders, door pockets, a decent glove box and this twin-chamber centre console.
You also get rain-sensing wipers, a rear-view camera and rear parking sensors, a proximity-sensing smart key and a push-button start.
Small enough for the city but capable enough to leave it, the Mitsubishi ASX is also flexible enough to fit almost any lifestyle. And it’s big enough for even the family dog…

Compact SUV sales are booming. Australian buyers can’t seem to get enough of these high-rise hatchbacks.
But what is it that makes cars like this so appealing?
Is it the tougher look? The promise of adventure? Confidence on the road?
Take the Mitsubishi ASX for example. This was one of the first of the current crop of compact SUV’s to hit Australian roads and is consistently a top seller in the segment.
Compared to a hatch or a wagon, SUV’s in general look chunky and tougher.
Most small SUV’s are soft-roaders, meaning they’re more at home around town.
It’s a bit like glamping… you want to test the water, but not jump straight into camping.
In the same way, the ASX isn’t a Pajero or a Challenger, it’s a bit of a poser – just like me convincing myself I’m roughing it here glamping.
The ASX looks tough, but it’s more luxurious in its design and engineering.
Another major reason that people want an SUV is that dream of clocking off Friday, heading off on a weekend adventure, if and when you want… or not, you don’t have to do anything out of the ordinary, it can just get you around town… and that’s the point.
Though it looks the business, like most of its competitors it’s not really off-road capable, it’s a bit more cushy than that. Though a little bit of unsealed road, a few puddles and a bit of mud is fine.
But the ASX is a great way to get off the beaten track – it has the capability to cover your budding adventurous side.
How is that? What does the ASX have that the majority of other small SUV’s don’t.
You can manually lock it into a full 4WD mode – giving you that confidence when you do wander off the beaten track a little.
Most cars in that segment that have 4wd only have an on demand 4wd system – you have no control over when it kicks in.
But it’s that confidence around town that attracts buyers to this segment.
The high driving position is the flavor of the decade – but it doesn’t feel big and bulky on the road like large SUV’s. It’s as easy to drive as a hatch or sedan.
Small SUV registrations were up 24.4 per cent over 2014 and sales of conventional small cars are dropping.
The now-defunct Hyundai ix35, has been king of this segment, and it’s now been replaced by the Hyundai Tucson while the ASX is the second best-seller.
Newcomers the Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3 are causing a stir though.
But the segment shows no sign of slowing down, there are plenty of buyers to go around.

The small SUV segment is one of the most hotly contested on the market, and the Mitsubishi ASX has managed to work its way to a handy number-two sales position (behind the Hyundai ix35).
Launched in 2010, the Mitsubishi ASX is getting on in age, but still manages to cut a sleek line on the road with flared wheel arches and a higher ride height than a regular small hatch.
Updated for the 2015 model year, the exterior of the Mitsubishi ASX now comes with 18-inch alloy wheels (standard across the range), black wheel arch extensions and a chrome tailgate extender. Inside the cabin, the ASX now gets a new steering wheel from the revised Outlander, along with DAB digital radio.
The ASX range starts from an affordable $24,990 for the two-wheel drive ASX LS in five-speed manual trim and tops out at $35,990 for the vehicle tested here, the ASX XLS 4WD, which is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox and on-demand all-wheel drive.
From the outside, the ASX stands out from the crowd thanks to LED daytime running lights and those big alloy wheels. The ASX stands out even more in the Starlight white colour tested, which features pearlescent highlights that give the car a more premium appearance.
The addition of a new steering wheel has really upped the interior appeal of the ASX. The tactile feel of the wheel is very pleasant, it sits nicely in the hand and the integrated buttons are a welcome departure from the cheaper feeling wheel in the previous car. The rest of the cabin quality is generally good with limited use of harsh plastics.
