Auto racing

Auto racing (also known as car racing, motor racing or automobile racing) is a sport involving the racing of automobiles for competition. The main aim of an individual event is to set the fastest time in a set number of laps or time limit. The finishing order is determined by race time, with the fastest time in first place, second-fastest in second place and so on. Any driver failing to complete a race for any reason is deemed "retired", or, more commonly, "out". Retired drivers will have their positions determined by the order in which those retired, with the first to retire finishing last, the next second-last and so on. In most events, a driver's final race position may be classified if he/she completes a certain amount of the race distance, usually just short of completing the full race (for example, in Formula One, a driver's race position is classified if he/she completes 90% of the full race distance). There are numerous different categories of auto racing, each with different rules and regulations, such as compulsory pit stops and car regulations, for all cars and drivers to comply. The continuous exposure of a driver to vibration and G forces in years of automobile racing may have a substantial effect on the high incidence of musculoskeletal disorders.

Frank Gordon

Sir Frank Gordon is a fictional character in the 1980s British sitcom Yes Minister and its sequel Yes, Prime Minister. In the universe of the show, he is Assistant Secretary to the Treasury and later the Permanent Secretary to the Treasury. He was portrayed by Peter Cellier.

Sir Frank makes his first appearance in the Yes Minister episode "The Quality of Life," gleefully listening to Sir Humphrey Appleby's machinations against the latter's minister, Jim Hacker.

Sir Frank makes more frequent appearances in Yes, Prime Minister, and in doing so, appears as both an ally and competitor with Sir Humphrey. As allies, in the Yes, Prime Minister episode of "A Real Partnership," Sir Frank conspires with Sir Humphrey to push through a civil service pay increase in a time of financial stringency. As competitors, Sir Frank attempts to undermine Sir Humphrey by suggesting that he would be able to take Humphrey's role in heading half of the British Civil Service ("The Key"). Indeed, it is their roles as de facto joint heads of the Civil Service (Sir Humphrey as Cabinet Secretary and Sir Frank as Permanent Secretary of the Treasury) that brings them most often into conflict.

Frank Williams (Formula One)

Sir Francis Owen Garbett Williams CBE (born 16 April 1942) is founder and team principal of the Williams Formula One racing team.

Early life

Born in South Shields, County Durham (now Tyne and Wear), England, son of a serving RAF officer and a special education teacher (and later headmistress), Williams was in part brought up by his maternal aunt and uncle in Jarrow when his parents' marriage broke down. He subsequently spent much of his later childhood at a private, fee-paying boarding school, St Joseph's College, Dumfries, in Scotland. In the late 1950s a friend gave Williams a ride in his Jaguar XK150 and young Frank was immediately hooked on fast cars.

Professional career

After a brief career as a driver and mechanic, funded by his work as a travelling grocery salesman, Williams founded Frank Williams Racing Cars in 1966. He ran drivers including Piers Courage and Tony Trimmer for several years in Formula Two and Formula Three. Williams purchased a Brabham Formula One chassis, which Courage drove throughout the 1969 Formula One season, twice finishing in second place.
