Cruce del río Huallaga camino al pueblo de Sauce, región San Martín (Perú).
Atravesar el río Huallaga en este punto demora unos cinco minutos y es posible hacerlo en dos lugares distantes unos 3 km el uno del otro, ambos a aproximadamente 35 km desde Tarapoto vía la carretera Fernando Belaúnde Terry. Este tramo del trayecto Tarapoto-Sauce demora unos 40 minutos.
Este video registra las operaciones en el punto de cruce más meridional, el cual se cruza con la embarcación más rudimentaria, una balsa trimarán artesanal.
Tras atravesar el Huallaga, el trayecto hasta el pueblo de Sauce, ubicado a orillas de la laguna del mismo nombre (también conocida como Laguna Azul), es de otros 40 minutos aproximadamente, a pesar de que esta parte del recorrido es de sólo 18 kilómetros. Sin embargo, esta etapa del trayecto se realiza por una tortuosa carretera afirmada: de ahí su inusitadamente larga duración.
El costo del transorte Tarapoto-Sauce a fines de 2013 era de 15 Nuevos Soles por persona en un "colectivo", un auto particular compartido por cuatro pasajeros más el conductor. Estos vehículos parten del distrito de la Banda de Shilcayo en Tarapoto, ubicado a unos 10 minutos del aeropuerto y de la Plaza de Armas de dicha ciudad. El pago se realiza al llegar al destino e incluye el cruce en balsa. El aire acondicionado es un lujo esquivo en estos automóviles, y es muy probable que los seguros de los cinturones de seguridad del asiento posterior hayan sido removidos.

Huallaga River
The Huallaga River is a tributary of the Marañón River, part of the Amazon Basin. Old names for this river include Guallaga and Rio de los Motilones. The Huallaga is born on the slopes of the Andes in central Peru and joins the Marañón before the latter reaches the Ucayali River to form the Amazon. Its main affluents are the Monzón, Mayo, Biabo, Abiseo and Tocache rivers. Coca is grown in most of those valleys, which are also exposed to periodic floods.
Description
Although it runs for 700 miles (1,100 km), it remains unnavigable for most part. For nearly its entire length the Huallaga is an impetuous torrent running through a succession of gorges. It has forty-two rapids (pongos) and it crosses the Andes, forming the Pongo de Aguirre gorge. From this point, 140 miles (230 km) from the Amazon, the Huallaga can be ascended by larger river boats (lanchas) to the port city of Yurimaguas, Loreto.
Although there are no defined boundaries, the river is commonly divided into two or three sections. From the town of Tocache in San Martin to the source of the river is generally referred to as the Upper Huallaga. Regions of the river are also referred to as central Huallaga (usually from Tocache or Juanjui to Chazuta), and the lower Huallaga (usually from Chazuta to Yurimaguas where the Huallaga meets the Marañon). These divisions are for general reference, and are independent of the "highland" and "lowland" jungle regions of the Amazon Rainforest.

Atravesar el río Huallaga en este punto demora unos cinco minutos y es posible hacerlo en dos lugares distantes unos 3 km el uno del otro, ambos a aproximadamente 35 km desde Tarapoto vía la carretera Fernando Belaúnde Terry. Este tramo del trayecto Tarapoto-Sauce demora unos 40 minutos.
Este video registra las operaciones en el punto de cruce más meridional, el cual se cruza con la embarcación más rudimentaria, una balsa trimarán artesanal.
Tras atravesar el Huallaga, el trayecto hasta el pueblo de Sauce, ubicado a orillas de la laguna del mismo nombre (también conocida como Laguna Azul), es de otros 40 minutos aproximadamente, a pesar de que esta parte del recorrido es de sólo 18 kilómetros. Sin embargo, esta etapa del trayecto se realiza por una tortuosa carretera afirmada: de ahí su inusitadamente larga duración.
El costo del transorte Tarapoto-Sauce a fines de 2013 era de 15 Nuevos Soles por persona en un "colectivo", un auto particular compartido por cuatro pasajeros más el conductor. Estos vehículos parten del distrito de la Banda de Shilcayo en Tarapoto, ubicado a unos 10 minutos del aeropuerto y de la Plaza de Armas de dicha ciudad. El pago se realiza al llegar al destino e incluye el cruce en balsa. El aire acondicionado es un lujo esquivo en estos automóviles, y es muy probable que los seguros de los cinturones de seguridad del asiento posterior hayan sido removidos.

Originally explored in the sixteenth century by Europeans who used the Amazon to traverse the formidable environment, the vast waterway fed by numerous tributaries eventually gave rise to commerce in later years. Utilizing boats and steamers, Europeans, slaves, and indigenous peoples increasingly carried out of the rain forest a rich array of highly sought-after products.
In recent years, a highway has made further inroads into the region, while Brazil has sought to keep the Amazon basin free from foreign exploitation. However today, the Amazon is ecologically endangered from reckless deforestation and a lack of public understanding of the importance of this remote region.
The vast Amazon

The area covered by the Amazon River and its tributaries more than triples between the dry season and wet season over the course of a year. In an average dry season, 110,000 square kilometers of land are water-covered, while in the wet season the flooded area of the Amazon basin rises to 350,000 square kilometers. At its widest point the Amazon River can be 6.8 miles (11 kilometers) wide during the dry season, but during the rainy season when the Amazon River floods the surrounding plains it can be up to 24.8 miles (40 kilometers) wide.
The quantity of freshwater released by the Amazon into the Atlantic Ocean is enormous: up to 300,000 square meters per second in the rainy season. The Amazon is responsible for one-fifth of the total volume of freshwater entering the oceans worldwide. Offshore of the mouth of the Amazon, potable water can be drawn from the ocean while still out of sight of the coastline, and the salinity of the ocean is notably lower a hundred miles out to sea.
The Amazon estuary is over 202 miles (325 kilometers) wide. The main river (which is between approximately one and six miles wide) is navigable for large ocean steamers to Manaus, Brazil, more than 900 miles (1,500 kilometers) upriver from the mouth. Smaller ocean vessels of 3,000 tons can reach as far as Iquitos, Peru, 2,250 miles (3,600 kilometers) from the sea. Smaller riverboats can reach 486 miles (780 kilometers) higher as far as Achual Point. Beyond that, small boats frequently ascend to the Pongo de Manseriche, just above Achual Point.
The Amazon drains an area of some 2,722,000 square miles, or nearly 40 percent of South America. It gathers its waters from 5 degrees north latitude to 20 degrees south latitude. Its most remote sources are found on the inter-Andean plateau, just a short distance from the Pacific Ocean; and, after coursing through the interior of Peru and across Brazil, it enters the Atlantic Ocean at the equator. The Amazon has changed its drainage several times, from westward in the early Cenozoic period to its present eastward locomotion following the uplift of the Andes Mountains.

The Upper Amazon comprises a series of major river systems in Peru that flow north and south into the Marañón River. Among others, these include the following rivers: Morona, Pastaza, Nucuray, Urituyacu, Chambira, Tigre, Nanay, Napo, Huallaga, and Ucayali. Originating in the snow-crested Andes Mountains high above Lake Lauricocha in central Peru, the headstream of the Marañón River rises in the glaciers in what is known as the Nevado de Yarupa. Rushing through waterfalls and gorges in an area of the high jungle called the Pongos, the Marañón River flows about 1,000 miles from west-central to northeast Peru before it combines with the Ucayali River, just below the provincial town of Nauta, to form the mighty Amazon River. Pachamanca is a traditional Peruvian dish based on the baking, with the aid of hot stones (the earthen oven is known as ahuatia), of lamb, mutton, pork, chicken or guinea pig, marinated in spices. Other Andean produce, such as potato, green lima beans or "habas", sweet potato, occasionally cassava or yuca, and humitas (sweet treat) as well as ears of corn, tamale and chili, is included in the baking.
The dish is essentially made in the central Peruvian Andes in three main regions: 1) The upper Huallaga valley, in Huánuco and Pasco vicinity, where it is made with pork and seasoned with chincho, a local herb; 2) in the Mantaro valley and neighboring area around cities like Huancayo, Tarma and Jauja; they use lamb and a different seasoning; and 3) in several places of Ayacucho department. In the Peruvian Amazonia, the southern and northern Andes, and the mostly desertic coast the dish is uncommon due to the lack of firewood or the type of stones needed without any content of sulphur. Meat is wrapped in banana leaves before being put in this kind of earthen stove.
The word is made of two Quechua roots: "pacha" earth and "manca", meaning "earthen pot" (cooking vessel).
This important part of Peruvian cuisine, which has existed since the time of the Inca Empire, has evolved over time, and its consumption is now widespread throughout modern Peru, where regional variations have appeared in the technical process of production, but not in the ingredients or their baking. It's important to note that the preparation is not only limited to Peru, but also that it exists with minimal variants in other Andean countries, for example Ecuador.

Other Andean produce, such as potato, green lima beans or "habas", sweet potato, occasionally cassava or yuca, and humitas (sweet treat) as well as ears of corn, tamale and chili, is included in the baking.
The dish is essentially made in the central Peruvian Andes in three main regions: 1) The upper Huallaga valley, in Huánuco and Pasco vicinity, where it is made with pork and seasoned with chincho, a local herb; 2) in the Mantaro valley and neighboring area around cities like Huancayo, Tarma and Jauja; they use lamb and a different seasoning; and 3) in several places of Ayacucho department. In the Peruvian Amazonia, the southern and northern Andes, and the mostly desertic coast the dish is uncommon due to the lack of firewood or the type of stones needed without any content of sulphur. Meat is wrapped in banana leaves before being put in this kind of earthen stove.
The word is made of two Quechua roots: "pacha" earth and "manca", meaning "earthen pot" (cooking vessel).
This important part of Peruvian cuisine, which has existed since the time of the Inca Empire, has evolved over time, and its consumption is now widespread throughout modern Peru, where regional variations have appeared in the technical process of production, but not in the ingredients or their baking. It's important to note that the preparation is not only limited to Peru, but also that it exists with minimal variants in other Andean countries, for example Ecuador.

"Saturday June 9th, walks near Tingo Maria
We will tell you what we did, rather than what we were told we could do (which was usually wrong). First, the only maps of the national park that we could find were at the entrance to Cueva de Lechuzas and at the start of one of today's walks, on notice boards.
We walked a couple of kms out of Tingo on the Huanaco road then flagged down a minibus. This dropped us at the start of a walk to Catarata Santa Carmen (not in the national park). The waterfall was 2 or 3 km from the main road, and was worth the hike. Loads of young locals turned up so it must be a favourite weekend spot. There is a restaurant near the falls with beautiful views of the hills, but the food some women had ordered was very slow coming, and did not look appetizing, it was covered in tomato sauce.
Back on the main road, we asked how far to 'Puente 3 de mayo', which a guide from yesterday had told us was the way in to Catarata Quinceanera (lovely on the picture), and were told a long way. So we flagged down another minibus and got off at Puente 3 de mayo. This turns out to be nowhere near Catarata Quinceanera but is at the start of a walk to Catarata Gloriapata, Catarata Sol Naciente and Rio Perdido. The walk to Gloriapata was very pretty, lots of uphill beside the river, and mostly in the shade, and there was a nice waterfall to see. Sol Naciente was just a series of rapids (unless we missed something), and we never found Rio Perdido, we probably turned back too soon as time was getting on.
Anyway, we found a probable round trip through the park, which would take at least half a day. You take a bus from near the market to Puente 3 de mayo, then take the track behind the national park office, which is over the bridge over the Rio Huallaga, and costs you 1 sol to cross!) Walk up to Catarata Gloriapata etc. Keep on walking and if the map is right you cross right through the park and come out near Cueva de Lechuzas. Then walk or flag down a mototaxi to get back to Tingo.
There is also the cave Cueva de las Pavas to visit, with the entrance on the main road between the turnoffs to Santa Carmen and Gloriapata. We never saw any entrance to Quinceanera.
Lots of people live in the national park up on the hill. There were no signs of horses or donkeys, so they must have to carry everything they need up the steep hill. We met one fellow with a huge and obviously very heavy sack on his head and shoulders, with not enough breath to say Buenas Tardes.
We got back to town in a collective taxi that took all of 10 minutes for the 15km. Speed limits ? Huh. There was yet another parade with people in costume outside the hotel, but we have seen too many parades now to take much notice today."

"Nuestro país necesita consolidar una política forestal ya que representa una actividad económica productiva que genera mucho empleo, pero lamentablemente su control, supervisión y reforestación está muy debilitada". Así lo dio a conocer el congresista Mesías Guevara Amasifuen (AP-FA) en reunión de trabajo en el que se realizó una evaluación de la política forestal implementada por el Estado peruano.
En esta primera mesa de trabajo el parlamentario convocó a los representantes de la Fiscalía, la Policía Nacional del Perú, la Defensoría del Pueblo, OSINFOR, SERFOR, Comité de Gestión de Bosques de Alto Huallaga, entre otras instituciones, a fin de buscar alternativas para contribuir en la lucha contra la tala ilegal.
La coordinadora del Proceso de Fortalecimiento del Sector Forestal y Fauna Silvestre-SERFOR, Lucetty Ullilen Vega, indicó que el reglamento de la nueva Ley Forestal, promulgada en el año 2011, se encuentra en su etapa final luego de completarse el proceso de consulta a la sociedad civil.
Refirió que en el marco de la reglamentación se está contemplando el ordenamiento forestal a fin de tomar decisiones para otorgar el título habilitante para la administración de cualquiera de los recursos, sea maderable o no maderable.
También indicó que se ha firmado el pacto de origen legal de la madera con empresarios y la comunidad, con miras a tener el compromiso de la compra de madera de origen legal.

La coordinadora del Proceso de Fortalecimiento del Sector Forestal y Fauna Silvestre-SERFOR, Lucetty Ullilen Vega, indicó que el reglamento de la nueva Ley Forestal, promulgada en el año 2011, se encuentra en su etapa final luego de completarse el proceso de consulta a la sociedad civil.
Refirió que en el marco de la reglamentación se está contemplando el ordenamiento forestal a fin de tomar decisiones para otorgar el título habilitante para la administración de cualquiera de los recursos, sea maderable o no maderable.
También indicó que se ha firmado el pacto de origen legal de la madera con empresarios y la comunidad, con miras a tener el compromiso de la compra de madera de origen legal.
