A: The fugue starts at 2:51 and the toccata returns at 7:12, but between these two points, parts which are strictly fugal alternate with episodes that are more toccata-like, so it's not 100% clear-cut (like in some other toccata/fugue pairs he wrote).

Q: Why does this piece of music remind me of horror movies?
A: Because it was used in the 1962 version of The Phantom of the Opera. Before that, it did not have that connotation. When Walt Disney and Leopold Stokowski used it in the 1940 film Fantasia, they considered it to be a purely abstract piece --- "absolute music" --- which brought to mind expressionistic forms and lines.

A: In organ music, the parts are often doubled with pitches that are higher than the notated pitch. In addition, the lowest part, played by the pedals, is sometimes doubled an octave lower. When parts are doubled, you tend to hear the lowest pitch, so in the bass part, there was the question: should I show the notated pitch or the pitch you hear? I decided to show both.

The Art of Fugue or The Art of the Fugue (original German: Die Kunst der Fuge), BWV 1080, is an incomplete masterpiece by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685--1750). The work was most likely started at the beginning of the 1740s, if not earlier. The first known surviving version, which contained 12 fugues and 2 canons, was copied by the composer in 1745. This manuscript has a slightly different title, added afterwards by his son-in-law Johann Christoph Altnickol: Die Kunst der Fuga. Bach's second version was published in 1751 after his death. It contains 14 fugues and 4 canons. "The governing idea of the work", as the eminent Bach specialist Christoph Wolff put it, is "an exploration in depth of the contrapuntal possibilities inherent in a single musical subject."

A: It's called "great" to distinguish it from the other fugue in G minor (BWV 578) which is called "little"; you can compare it here:

My friend Vincenzo Culotta plays my "Lady Gaga Fugue", a piece based on the theme from the song "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga.
This should show how counterpoint can be fun and up to date ;)
The main idea was to write a "neo-baroque" fugue that would sound both baroque and modern. To give a "modern feeling" I used a special treatment of fourths, fifths, suspensions and rythm.

Fugue
In music, a fugue (/fjuːɡ/ FEWG) is a contrapuntal compositional technique in two or more voices, built on a subject (theme) that is introduced at the beginning in imitation (repetition at different pitches) and recurs frequently in the course of the composition.
The English term fugue originated in the 16th century and is derived from the French word fugue or the Italian fuga. This in turn comes from Latin, also fuga, which is itself related to both fugere ("to flee") and fugare ("to chase"). The adjectival form is fugal. Variants include fughetta (literally, "a small fugue") and fugato (a passage in fugal style within another work that is not a fugue).
A fugue usually has three sections: an exposition, a development, and a final entry that contains the return of the subject in the fugue's tonic key. Some fugues have a recapitulation. In the Middle Ages, the term was widely used to denote any works in canonic style; by the Renaissance, it had come to denote specifically imitative works. Since the 17th century, the term fugue has described what is commonly regarded as the most fully developed procedure of imitative counterpoint.

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (/ˈstɛfəniː dʒɜːrməˈnɒtə/ STEF-ə-nee jur-mə-NOT-ə; born March 28, 1986), known professionally as Lady Gaga, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Bach - The Art of Fugue, BWV 1080 [complete on Organ]
The Art of Fugue or The Art of the Fugue (original German: Die Kunst der Fuge), BWV 1080, is an incomplete masterpiece by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685--1750). The work was most likely started at the beginning of the 1740s, if not earlier. The first known surviving version, which contained 12 fugues and 2 canons, was copied by the composer in 1745. This manuscript has a slightly different title, added afterwards by his son-in-law Johann Christoph Altnickol: Die Kunst der Fuga. Bach's second version was published in 1751 after his death. It contains 14 fugues and 4 canons. "The governing idea of the work", as the eminent Bach specialist Christoph Wolff put it, is "an exploration in depth of the contrapuntal possibilities inherent in a single musical subject." A: The fugue starts at 2:51 and the toccata returns at 7:12, but between these two points, parts which are strictly fugal alternate with episodes that are more toccata-like, so it's not 100% clear-cut (like in some other toccata/fugue pairs he wrote).

A: Each "stop" on the organ was played on a separate MIDI channel, and each MIDI channel was assigned a color.

A: The colors show which "voice" is playing.
Q: Why are there two lines an octave apart in the bass?
A: In organ music, the parts are often doubled with pitches that are higher than the notated pitch. In addition, the lowest part, played by the pedals, is sometimes doubled an octave lower. When parts are doubled, you tend to hear the lowest pitch, so in the bass part, there was the question: should I show the notated pitch or the pitch you hear? I decided to show both.

A: The colors show which "voice" is playing.
Q: Why are there two lines an octave apart in the bass?
A: In organ music, the parts are often doubled with pitches that are higher than the notated pitch. In addition, the lowest part, played by the pedals, is sometimes doubled an octave lower. When parts are doubled, you tend to hear the lowest pitch, so in the bass part, there was the question: should I show the notated pitch or the pitch you hear? I decided to show both.

My friend Vincenzo Culotta plays my "Lady Gaga Fugue", a piece based on the theme from the song "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga.
This should show how counterpoint can be fun and up to date ;)
The main idea was to write a "neo-baroque" fugue that would sound both baroque and modern. To give a "modern feeling" I used a special treatment of fourths, fifths, suspensions and rythm.

Listening to Music (MUSI 112) In this lecture, Professor Wright briefly explores the manifestations of the fugue form in poetry, painting, and other disciplines, and then gives a detailed explanation of how fugues are put together in music.
