The last flying Vulcan bomber will take to the skies for the final time before the end of the month. It causes a stir every time it flies due to its unique shape and earth shaking roar. It has been hugely popular at airshows for several years and is best known for carrying out the longest ever raid of its kind during the Falklands War in 1982. But experts say it has to stop flying.

This gripping film tells the humorous yet heroic story of how a crumbling, Cold-War era Vulcan flew the then longest range bombing mission in history and how a WW2 vintage bomb changed the outcome of the Falklands War. On 30th April 1982, the RAF launched a secret mission; to bomb Port Stanley's runway, putting it out of action for Argentine fighter jets. The safety of the British Task Force depended on its success. But the RAF could only get a single Vulcan 8,000 miles south to the Falklands as just one bomber needed an aerial fleet of thirteen Victor tanker planes to refuel it throughout the 16 hour round-trip. From start to finish, the seemingly impossible mission was a comedy of errors, held together by sheer British pluck and ingenuity. On the brink of being scrapped, only three of the ageing nuclear bombers could be fitted out for war, one to fly the mission and two in reserve. Crucial spare parts were scavenged from museums and scrap yards - one vital piece found as an ashtray in the Officer's Mess. In just three weeks, the Vulcan crews had to learn air-to-air refuelling, which they hadn't done for twenty years and conventional bombing, which they hadn't done for ten. The RAF scoured the country for old WW2 iron bombs and complex refuelling calculations were done the night before on a £5.00 pocket calculator. With a plan stretched to the limit and the RAF's hopes riding on just one Vulcan, the mission was flown on a knife-edge; fraught with mechanical failures, unreliable navigation, electrical storms and ultimately not enough fuel. Of the Vulcan's twenty-one bombs dropped, only one found its target. But that was enough to change the outcome of the war.

Danny Savage got a tour of the cockpit from Chief Pilot Martin Withers at its base at Robin Hood Airport near Doncaster.

At the end of 1981 the iconic Avro Vulcan was withdrawn from service and the famous 617 Squadron faced its final days. Fortunately, these last weeks of 617 Squadron at R.A.F Scampton, Lincolnshire, were captured on camera. This fly-on-the-wall documentary charts the thoughts and emotions of the crew and commanders and, importantly, shows the great aircraft being prepared and embarking on its final sortie.
617 Squadron was formed during the Second World War for the famous Dambuster raids, led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson. The legendary name was resurrected in 1958 as a fitting moniker for those who would lead Britain s defence against a new kind of warfare the threat of nuclear attack.
This film recalls the history of both the Squadron and the Vulcan, including footage from the 1952 Farnborough Air Show, but its main focus is the countdown to the final flight. We meet the commanding officers, including Squadron Leader Chip Brunson and Wing Commander John Herbertson, flight crew, ground crew and other key figures, hear their thoughts about the Vulcan, share their emotions and travel with them towards the end of an era.
Mike Kay (captain), Chalie Brakewell (navigator plotter), Austen Dancey (navigator radar) and Paul Beech (co-pilot), all flight lieutenants, describe their roles and how they plan a mission, and we see them flying the great machine, with footage from both inside the aircraft and air-to-air. With only nine hours of flying before the Squadron is disbanded, we see the preparations for the final flight, from briefing to take off, and beyond as we share the final chapter in an amazing story.
Even with the end in sight, the story of the Avro Vulcan is packed with drama it is December and heavy fog throws the final sortie into doubt. However, not even the brutal British winter weather can prevent the mighty Vulcan taking to the skies, and we watch in awe as the aircraft soars over Derbyshire, flying low over the Derwent valley.

*Watch in 1080p!*
Today was a very sad day for British aviation & engineering as the last airworthy Avro Vulcan Bomber flew its farewell tour of the UK. Date Filmed: 11th October 2015.
On the Sunday 11th October 2015, XH558 took to the skies from Doncaster 'Robin Hood' Airport to take part in its final tour around the UK. Yesterday, the aircraft flew its Northern route and today it was the turn of the south to see this spectacular beast one last time!
I had positioned myself at Gloucester to get my last glimpse of this iconic British aircraft & I was lucky to enough to get airside to film it. At approximately 1530pm, the Vulcan appeared over the horizon inbound from Cardiff & Llandegfedd for one final flypast over Staverton Airport. Listen to the roar of the four Olympus engines throttle up as it departs to the east towards Brize Norton.
A little bit of history about this aircraft now. The Vulcan was produced by Avro between 1956 & 1965. 136 were produced with only one still flying, but only for another two weeks. The Vulcan appeared in many conflicts during its time in the RAF including the Falkland's war in the 1980's where in mission Black Buck, it bombed the runway at Port Stanley to halt Argentinean advances, ultimately helping Britain win the war. I hope you enjoyed and thanks for watching! Please like, comment and subscribe for weekly Full HD videos.

Huge crowds gathered at vantage points across Greater Manchester to catch a final glimpse of the famous Cold War plane before it retires
A bird’s eye view of the famous Vulcan warplane in flight was captured on video - by the police helicopter.
Huge crowds gathered at vantage points across Greater Manchester on Saturday to catch a final glimpse of the Cold War bomber before it retires reports the Manchester Evening News .
And officers flying in the National Police Air Service helicopter, based at Barton Aerodrome in Salford, had a better view than most.
NPAS Barton said on Twitter: “We were deployed from Barton, Manchester to attend an incident in Preston, Lancs. As we flew north we passed @XH558 travelling south towards Manchester on it’s Final Flight (Northern Tour).
“Video taken from some distance away, but sad to see it for the last time.”
After taking off from Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster at 1pm, the mighty bomber flew over Westhoughton in Bolton then Atherton, Tyldesley and Astley, roughly following the route of the A577, before it crossed Barton Moss Road in Salford and passed over Barton.
From there, it followed the path of the M62 past Boysnope Golf Club, Irlam and Cadishead then turned at Lymm Golf Club and flew down through Bucklow Hill and Mobberley before arriving at Manchester Airport just after 3pm.
The Vulcan then followed the route of the A5102 to Woodford Aerodrome, where the bombers were assembled in the 1960s, before flying on towards Shrewsbury.
Hundreds of dedicated plane enthusiasts and members of the public gathered at Woodford to watch the fly-past, which is expected to be the plane’s last after Sunday’s tour of the south.
Vulcans played a key role for Britain during the Cold War period, and their ground-breaking design led directly to the development of Concorde.
They were part of the RAF’s so-called V-Bomber force, which comprised the UK’s strategic nuclear strike force, and were used on sorties and bombing raids during the Falklands War in the 80s.
Named the ‘Spirit of Britain’, the XH558 was the last Vulcan in RAF service and is the last airworthy plane in existence today. It’s unlikely to fly again however, due to high maintenance costs and engineers ending their support for the aircraft after a costly restoration.

AVRO Vulcan bomber XH 558, the last one flying, spotted 11 Oct 2015 on its "farewell tour" before it is grounded. I spent an hour researching the best spot to observe it from for this 49-second flypast. Twenty other people had the same idea. Its published flightpath was right over this motorway-style intersection, but it flew half a mile to the North, presumably to evade ack-ack, enemy fighters and the barrage balloons which once guarded Aldershot Gasworks. The noise is from the road traffic, not the plane. As many others have said: "Live long and prosper."
