The Tsukiji Market (築地市場, Tsukiji shijō), supervised by the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market (東京都中央卸売市場, Tōkyō-to Chūō Oroshiuri Shijō) of the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Industrial and Labor Affairs, is the biggest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world and also one of the largest wholesale food markets of any kind.
The market is located in Tsukiji in central Tokyo, between the Sumida River and the upmarket Ginza shopping district. While the inner wholesale market has restricted access to visitors, the outer retail market, restaurants and associated restaurant supply stores remain a major tourist attraction for both domestic and overseas visitors.
The market is located near the Tsukijishijō Station on the Toei Ōedo Line and Tsukiji Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line. There are two distinct sections of the market as a whole. The "inner market" (jōnai-shijō) is the licensed wholesale market, where approximately 900 licensed wholesale dealers operate small stalls and where the auctions and most of the processing of the fish take place. The "outer market" (jōgai-shijō) is a mixture of wholesale and retail shops that sell Japanese kitchen tools, restaurant supplies, groceries, and seafood, and many restaurants, especially sushi restaurants. Most of the shops in the outer market close by the early afternoon, and in the inner market even earlier.
Tsukiji (築地) is a district of Chūō, Tokyo, Japan, the site of the Tsukiji fish market. Literally meaning "reclaimed land," it lies near the Sumida River on land reclaimed from Tokyo Bay in the 18th century, during the Edo period.
There are also districts named Tsukiji in Kobe and Amagasaki, cities in Hyōgo Prefecture, although neither is as well known as Tokyo's.
Tsukiji is built on reclaimed land out of what were once lowland marshes along the Sumida River delta. Throughout the Tokugawa period, earth from the shogunate's extensive moat and canal excavations was systematically used to fill in the marshes along the river, creating new commercial districts and waterfront housing.
The Great Fire of Meireki of 1657 destroyed over two-thirds of Edo's buildings, including Hongan-ji temple in Asakusa, the enormous Kantō headquarters of the Jōdo Shinshū sect. As a result, the temple site was relocated to Tsukiji, where many of the residents of nearby Tsukudajima were instrumental in its reconstruction. A number of other temples were also erected on what is now the outer marketplace. In addition, many private residences for samurai and feudal lords were constructed along the southern edge of Tsukiji.
A fish market is a marketplace used for marketing fish products. It can be dedicated to wholesale trade between fishermen and fish merchants, or to the sale of seafood to individual consumers, or to both. Retail fish markets, a type of wet market, often sell street food as well.
Fish markets range in size from small fish stalls, such as the one in the photo at the right, to the great Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, turning over about 660,000 tonnes a year.
The term fish market can refer to the process of fish marketing in general, but this article is concerned with physical marketplaces.
Fish markets were known in antiquity. They served as a public space where large numbers of people could gather and discuss current events and local politics.
Because seafood is quick to spoil, fish markets are historically most often found in seaside towns. Once ice or other simple cooling methods became available, some were also established in large inland cities that had good trade routes to the coast.

The world's largest fish market is one of Tokyo's biggest attractions. Tsukiji is set to move to a new location soon so we went for a visit this month. ★ Tuna Auction 04:00 to 05:00 ★ Outer Market 06:00 to 09:00 ☆ Tuna Shop 08:00 ☆ Make Your Own Breakfast 08:30 ★ Inner Market 09:00 to 10:00 (Note: Photography and Video is prohibited inside the inner market until 09:00 every day.) Why is Tsukiji Tokyo's biggest attraction? Maybe it's because it's not a tourist attraction at all. This is a real market where many of Japan's best sushi chefs get their ingredients. It's raw and real. Tsukiji is essentially a city within a city. It has its own way of doing things. There are many rules to visiting Tsukiji. You should wear long pants, boots (if you have them – the floor is wet and full...

Tsukiji Fish Market, Tokyo, Japan -- My wife and I woke up at 3:30 am, hailed a cab on the rain slick streets of Tokyo and headed down to the Tsukiji Fish Market in the hopes to be one of the 120 lucky individuals admitted to the tuna auction. We arrived at the guard gate at 4:15 am only to be told that the allotted spots had been filled for the morning's auction. Now what? Tourist are not allowed into the fish market until 9 am, we don't want to go back to our Ryokan, so we opted for a little sushi breakfast....Sushi Dai was the recommended eatery. Here are some of the best local street food to try in Tsukiji! From Japanese sweets like maguro yaki (tuna shaped taiyaki) to savouries like the popular sea urchin and eel sticks :) Check out DogaTV’s Tsukiji videos here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FjPKYBEDZU&index;=6&list;=PLuY8w8AAmKjEC6-Vip7gf_Y3u1anHLW1w In the end of the video I also gave some tips about which sushi restaurant to pick to eat at in Tsukiji and in short all of the sushi shops are great - the fish all come from the same place so the sushi is all pretty similar! The crowded places with huge lines are often just because they are advertised more on the internet or have a English friendly website. Local shops are less advertised online as they already have a reputation with the locals so go somewhere different from al...
*************************** please READ ME!!!!!!!!!! :) *************************** Lining up for the famous SUSHI DAI @ Tsukiji Fish Market (Tokyo, Ginza) We were told that it is one of the BEST sushi places in Japan where you can get extremely fresh and delicious sushi for a ridiculously great price point (about $50 USD per person for 11 pieces of sushi - you also get soup, steamed tamago (egg) and tea). Everyone was RIGHT about this place, and the sushi is most definitely worth the wait. DELICIOUS, melt-in-your-mouth-worthy fatty tuna and other delicacies that you cannot easily find in North America (at least not the premium quality). I am glad we went through with it and got the full experience. It was quite an experience to be lining up for 4.5 hours for su...

► Check out the next Japanese Food video: http://bit.ly/1KsrDKE I took a trip down to Tsukiji to see the largest wholesale fish market in the world. I wanted to get some legit fresh sashimi and boy, I wasn't disappointed. First I had some scallops roasted on a grill and then I moved on to the main course of sashimi over a rice bowl. The Japanese seafood was top-notch, but rather than satisfying my hunger this fish only awakened my deep primal urge to feed and caused me to become a certified seafood addict. Needless to say, I'll definitely be visiting Tsukiji fish market again in the future. SoloTravelBlog is international travel with a sarcastic edge. Day three in Japan we went to the Tsukiji fish market, got coffee at a cute 30 year old coffee shop in Tsukuji, walked through Ginza's shopping district (very expensive!), saw a Kabuki show (only one act of three because it is one third the price), went grocery shopping (forgot to record we were so hungry), met Misaki Chan and Shouhe for Monja and Okonomiaki, went to Sensoji at night which was the best time because it was beautiful and less crowded. Tomorrow we will be going to the Tokyo Game Show! Tune in for more of our adventure in Japan! CESeetheWorld on Instagram and Twitter Filmed on on an iPhone5SE and edited with iMovie on iPhone.

April 2016 This video was recorded in the end of april. We visited Tsukiji fish market, on the hunt for the best sushi Tokyo has to offer. And more izakaya, bar hopping, karaoke and clubbing ~ —— Tsukiji Fish Market (築地市場, Tsukiji Shijō) A large wholesale market for fish, fruits and vegetables in central Tokyo. Maybe mostly known for its tuna auction. However, visitors can only see the auction between 5 and 6 in the morning, and the amount of spots are limited so you have to apply for them early. Not really our thing. We just came for the fresh sushi and other delicious snacks we could find :D Also, we heard the market is expected to move to a new site soon (but now the move is delayed indefinitely or something?). So we felt lucky we got the chance to visit! http://www.japan-guide.com/e...

It was super cold and busy during our visit to Tsukiji Fish Market. I got sushi fro lunch that it was amazing! If the weather was not too cold, I think we would have had a more pleasant time there. Still it was a great experience.
