The evolution of plants has resulted in widely varying levels of complexity, from the earliest algal mats, through bryophytes, lycopods, ferns to the complex gymnosperms and angiosperms of today. While many of the groups which appeared earlier continue to thrive, as exemplified by algal dominance in marine environments, more recently derived groups have also displaced previously ecologically dominant ones, e.g. the ascendance of flowering plants over gymnosperms in terrestrial environments.
Evidence for the appearance of the first land plants occurs in the Ordovician, around 450 million years ago in the form of fossil spores. Land plants began to diversify in the Late Silurian, around 430 million years ago, and the results of their diversification are displayed in remarkable detail in an early Devonian fossil assemblage from the Rhynie chert. This chert preserved early plants in cellular detail, petrified in volcanic springs.
Explanation of flowering plants and how they evolved.
Scientists have solved a long-running mystery about the first stages of plant life on earth. The team of researchers from the John Innes Centre, the University of Wisconsin – Madison and other international collaborators, has discovered how ancient algae were able to inhabit land, before it went on to evolve into the world’s first plant and colonise the earth. The discovery shows for the first time that the algae already knew how to survive on land while it was still in the water. Dr Delaux and colleagues analysed DNA and RNA of some of the earliest known land plants and green algae and found evidence that their shared algal ancestor living in the Earth’s waters already possessed a set of genes, or symbiotic pathways, needed to detect and interact with beneficial fungi called arbuscu...

Life on Earth 009 - Plants Paul surveys the Kingdom Plantae. He begins with a brief description of the phylogeny of land plants. He then describes the defining characteristics of plants, including cell walls, embryophytes, alternation of generation and photosynthesis. He briefly describes the sporophyte and the gametophyte. He finishes with brief discussion of plant evolution and includes major divisions, like bryophytes, ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms.
