The Māori are the indigenous people of Aotearoa or what is today New Zealand. Famous for their haka, poi, and face tattoos. They're descended from Polynesians, the greatest voyagers the world has ever known. Living and working by Maori customs, values and culture | Bianca Ranson | TEDxWaiheke
Bianca Ranson describes her journey from an education in a total immersion Maori to running an award-winning business that combines Maori culture and the natural environment. Rather than compromising who she was as a Maori woman, in an industry that didn't understand or acknowledge her culture, she started her own business in order to work in the way she needed to. With $200 in her pocket, Potiki Adventures was born.
Bianca is the founder and director of Potiki Adventures, an award-winning adventure tourism company that combines Maori culture and the New Zealand outdoors, and is also globally recognised for its work with Maori youth.

Māori party co-leader ejected from New Zealand parliament after performing haka
An Indigenous New Zealand lawmaker was thrown out of New Zealand's parliament for performing a Māori haka in protest against what he said were racist arguments. Rawiri Waititi told lawmakers in the chamber that he was forced to listen to a 'constant barrage of insults' directed toward Indigenous people. Speaker Trevor Mallard told Waititi to sit down, but instead he performed the haka, a traditional dance or challenge accompanied by a chant. 'Order. The member will now leave the chamber,' Mallard told Waititi, which he did along with his co-leader, Debbie Ngarewa-Packer

As a Maori woman Bianca did not want to compromise her beliefs and values when going to work, so starting Potiki Adventures was a way to incorporate these into her workplace. Potiki Adventures now offers employment to people in an environment that celebrates being Maori and living and working by Maori values, customs and traditions.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Te reo Māori, the native language of Aotearoa/New Zealand, was declared an official language of the country as recently as 1987. However, today it is increasingly common to hear te reo used. In this talk, Hemi Kelly explores the benefits of learning te reo Māori, and addresses possible obstacles that have hindered learning in the past, so that the language can continue to flourish and reach new heights of recognition in the future. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

We have something a little different this time! During our time in New Zealand, we stopped by the Mitai Maori Village and we got to experience the Maori way of life. Centuries ago, the Maori culture set up it a kinship and connection with the land in New Zealand.
We got to learn about the Mitai tribe and experience their customs and traditions. We got to see their version of the Haka (War Dance) and Poi (Traditional Dance), and we even got to try their traditional food, Hangi.
