Ekadashi (Sanskrit: एकादशी, ekādaśī, "eleven"), also spelled as Ekadasi, is the eleventh lunar day (Tithi) of the shukla (bright) or krishna (dark) paksha (fortnight) of every lunar month in the Hindu calendar (Panchang). In Hinduism and Jainism it is considered a spiritually beneficial day. Scriptures recommend observing an (ideally waterless) fast from sunset on the day beore Ekadashi to 48 minutes after sunrise on the day following Ekadashi.[citation needed]
Two Ekadashis occur in one month according to positions of the moon. One Ekadashi coincides with the times when the Moon is the closest to Earth (perigee) and the times when it is farthest from the Earth (apogee). These are also the times of high tide and low tide respectively. During Ekadashis in the Krishna paksha, the Moon is at its closest to the Earth and during Ekadashis in the Shukla paksha at its farthest from the Earth.
Bhagavata Purana (sk. IX, adhy. 4) notes the observation of Ekadashi by Ambarisha, a devotee of Vishnu.

Prabodhini Ekadashi Vrat Katha 22nd November 2015 Sunday in Hindi - प्रबोधिनी एकादशी व्रत कथा Prabodhini Ekadashi also known as Devotthan Ekadashi, is the 11th lunar day (ekadashi) in the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu month of Kartik. It marks the end of the four-month period of Chaturmas, when god Vishnu is believed to sleep. It is believed that Vishnu sleeps on Shayani Ekadashi and wakes on Prabodhini Ekadashi, thus giving this day the name "Prabodhini Ekadashi" ("awakening eleventh"), Vishnu-prabodhini ("awakening of Vishnu") and Dev-Prabodhini Ekadashi, Deothan, Dev uthav ekadashi or Dev Oothi ekadashi ("god's awakening"). The end of Chaturmas, when marriages are prohibited, signifies the beginning of the Hindu wedding season. It is also known as Kartiki Ekadashi, Kartik Shukla ekadashi and Kartiki. भगवान विष्णु को चार मास की योग-निद्रा से जगाने के लिए घण्टा, शंख, मृदंग आदि वाद्यों की मांगलिक ध्वनि के बीचये श्लोक पढकर जगाते हैं-

Prabodhini Ekadashi also known as Devotthan Ekadashi, is the 11th lunar day (ekadashi) in the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu month of Kartik. It marks the end of the four-month period of Chaturmas, when god Vishnu is believed to sleep.
It is believed that Vishnu sleeps on Shayani Ekadashi and wakes on Prabodhini Ekadashi, thus giving this day the name "Prabodhini Ekadashi" ("awakening eleventh"), Vishnu-prabodhini ("awakening of Vishnu") and Dev-Prabodhini Ekadashi, Deothan, Dev uthav ekadashi or Dev Oothi ekadashi ("god's awakening").
The end of Chaturmas, when marriages are prohibited, signifies the beginning of the Hindu wedding season. It is also known as Kartiki Ekadashi, Kartik Shukla ekadashi and Kartiki. Prabodhini Ekadashi is followed by Kartik Poornima, which day is celebrated as Dev Diwali or Diwali of gods.

Saphala/Safala Ekadasi is observed during the waning phase of the moon in the month of December – January. In 2016, the date of Saphala Ekadashi is 5th January. The significance of Safala Ekadashi was explained to Arjuna by Lord Krishna. It is mentioned in the Brahmanda Purana. Fasting on Saphala Ekadashi is believed to help in cleansing the sins committed and it also opens the door of fame in earthly life. Ekadashi is a highly auspicious day dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
Ekadashi (एकादशी), also spelled as Ekadasi, is the eleventh lunar day (tithi) of the shukla (bright) or krishna (dark) paksha (fortnight) of every lunar month in the Hindu calendar (Panchang). In Hinduism and Jainism it is considered a spiritually beneficial day and is usually observed by a partial fast. Beans and grains are not eaten during Ekadasi, as on this day these two foods are believed to be contaminated by sin. Only fruits, vegetables and milk products are eaten during Ekadasi. This period of abstention runs from sunrise on the day of Ekadasi to sunrise on the day following Ekadasi.

It is believed that Lord Ram observed Vijaya Ekadashi to cross the ocean to reach Lanka and defeat Ravana.
The importance of Vijaya Ekadasi was narrated to Narada by Lord Brahma. Legend has it that when Lord Ram and his army – the Vanarasena – was searching for a means to cross the ocean to reach Lanka, Lakshmana mentioned about a great a Sage who lived nearby and said that perhaps he might provide us with a solution.
It is this sage who mentioned about Vijaya Ekadashi to Lord Ram and its benefits – observing it will help in being victorious.
All the normal rules associated with Ekadashi fasting is observed during Vijaya Ekadasi. Some people don’t sleep on the day. Grains and food made of rice are strictly avoided.

Shattila Ekadashi is also known as Sattila Ekadashi or Tilda Ekadashi. Shattila Ekadashi fast is observed in the month of January-February during the waning phase of the moon. Tilda Ekadashi fast is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Shattila Ekadashi is performed on the 11th day in the month of Magh. The name Sat-Tila has been derived from "Shat"(six) and "Til"(sesame seeds), which means six uses of sesame seeds.
1. Bathe in the water mixed with sesame seeds (til snan).
2. Rub sesame seed paste on the body (til ka ubatan).
3. Offer sesame seeds into the fire while performing Yagna or havana(til ka havan).
4. Prepare meals that include sesame seeds (tilodak).
5. Offer tarpans with Sesame seeds for ancestor's soul (til ka tarpan).
6. Donate the sesame seeds to the poor and hungry(til ka daan).
