Kogi is a state in the central region of Nigeria. It is popularly called the Confluence State because the confluence of River Niger and River Benue is at its capital, Lokoja, which is the first administrative capital of modern-day Nigeria.
Agriculture is a main part of the economy, and the state also has coal, steel and other mineral industries.
The main ethnic groups are Igala, Ebira, and Okun.
Kogi state is the only state in Nigeria which shares a boundary with ten other states.
The state was created in 1991 from parts of Kwara State and Benue State. The state as presently constituted, comprises the people of the Kabba Province of Northern Nigeria. One of the first Qadi in the Kogi State was Faruk Imam.
Sierra Nevada is a Spanish term meaning "snow-covered mountain range" (sierra is one of the Spanish words for "mountain range").
Sierra Nevada may refer to any of the following:
Santa Marta is a city in Colombia. It is the capital of the department of Magdalena and third largest urban city of the Caribbean Region of Colombia, after Barranquilla and Cartagena. Founded on July 29, 1525, by the Spanish conquistador Rodrigo de Bastidas, it was the first Spanish settlement in Colombia, and is the oldest surviving city in that country, and second oldest in South America. This city is situated on a bay of the same name and as such, is a prime tourist destination.
Before the arrival of Europeans, the South American continent was inhabited by a number of indigenous groups. Due to a combination of tropical weather, significant rainfall, and the destruction and misrepresentation of many records by Spanish conquistadors, our understanding of the peoples of this region is limited.
The Tairona formed mid- to large-size population centers, consisting of stone pathways, terraces, protected waterways, and spaces dedicated to agricultural produce. Their economy was primarily agricultural, cultivating corn, pineapple, yucca, and other local foodstuffs. The Tayrona are considered quite advanced for their time period. Surviving archaeological sites consisted of formed terraces and small scale underground stone channels. They also were known to actively collect and process salt, which was a significant trading commodity. We know that they traded with other indigenous groups along the coast and interior. Archaeological excavations have recovered significant works in pottery, stonework and gold.
The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is an isolated mountain range separated from the Andes chain that runs through Colombia. Reaching an altitude of 5,700 m (18,700 ft) just 42 km (26 mi) from the Caribbean coast, the Sierra Nevada is the world's highest coastal range. The Sierra Nevada encompasses about 17,000 km2 (6,600 sq mi) and serves as the source of 36 rivers. The range is in the Departments of Magdalena, Cesar and La Guajira.
The highest point of the Sierra Nevada group (and Colombia in general) may be either Pico Cristóbal Colón or Pico Simón Bolívar both in the municipalities of Santa Marta and Aracataca; it has yet to be determined which is higher. SRTM data and local topographic maps show that their true elevations are approximately 5,700 m (18,700 ft), lower than the 5,775 m (18,947 ft) elevation that is often quoted.
The Sierra Nevada is a compact group, relatively small in area, and completely surrounded by lands with elevations below 200 m (660 ft). Although it is associated with the Tropical Andes, the main backbone of the Andes cannot be reached from the Sierra Nevada without dropping below this level. This makes its highest point the world's fifth most prominent summit.
The Kogi (/ˈkoʊɡi/ KOH-gee) or Cogui or Kágaba, meaning "jaguar" in the Kogi language, are an indigenous ethnic group that lives in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia. Their civilization has continued since the Pre-Columbian era.
The Kogi language belongs to the Chibchan family.
The Kogi are descendants of the Tairona culture, which flourished before the times of the Spanish conquest. The Tairona were an advanced civilization which built many stone structures and pathways in the jungles. They made many gold objects which they would hang from trees and around their necks. They lived not much differently from modern day Kogi. Before the Spanish conquistadors arrived, the Tairona were forced to move into the highlands when the Caribs invaded around 1000 CE. The decision to flee to the mountains proved beneficial and strategic by the time the Spanish entered modern-day Colombia in the 15th century. In 1498, the Spanish arrived in Northern Colombia where they began to enslave indigenous groups. Threatened by dogs and soldiers alike, the Tairona remained in isolation. Regardless, many priests were hanged, women were stolen and raped, and children where forced to accept Spanish education. Later, missionaries came and also began to influence their way of life, building chapels and churches amidst their villages to train and convert the locals. In the years since, the Kogi have remained in their home in the mountains, which allows them to escape the worst effects of colonization and aids them in preserving their traditional way of life

Kogi leader Fernando Daza has a message for the "little brother". The indigenous groups from the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia call all non-Sierra-indigenous "little brothers", who have to be led by the hand and taught the ways of the (spiritual-) world.
Traditional rainforest healer and Kogi Shaman Mamo Pedro Juan and Kogi political leader Santos Sana comes to speak at Google from Colombia. The Kogi Indians of northern Colombia have been called "The Dalai Lamas of South America" because of their wisdom, their pacifism and their unequalled respect for tradition. Living on or near the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, their traditional lands range from the snow fields atop the mountain down to the coral reefs of the Caribbean, meaning that they are one of the few indigenous cultures in the Americas managing highland, lowland and marine ecosystems. In fact, it was the Kogi who, in calling attention to melting glaciers over twenty years ago, served as some of the first harbingers of climate change. Now the Kogis have joined forces with the Amazo...

* Melaye, a social deviant, says Kogi governor Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, on Wednesday described the senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, as a social defiant that should be checked by the Senate. He said the federal lawmakers needed to carry out the exercise urgently before they would be adjudged birds of the same feather with Melaye. Bello spoke with State House correspondents after he met with the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The governor and Melaye have been at loggerheads with the senator accusing Bello of being behind the current move by his constituents to recall him from the National Assembly.

To see my guide to Tayrona National Park visit: http://www.brendansadventures.com/guide-tayrona-national-park/ I finally got the chance to visit Tayrona National Park in coastal Colombia, and it was absolutely brilliant. I managed to get quite a few cool photos in the park as well. In total, I spent 3 days in Tayrona National Park in an area called Cabo San Lucas. It's just such a beautiful and photogenic place. Moreover, it's a great place to kind of just hang out and enjoy life. For me, and my busy travel photography lifestyle Tayrona National Park was the perfect mix of photography and relaxation. If felt like a bit of a work holiday, to be honest. If you have the chance to spend some time in Colombia, be sure you schedule some time at Tayrona National Park.
